...to want people to say and spell my kid's name right when they've known her for ages?

OK, DD has an unusual name. About half the kids in her school have unusual names. Seems to me that unusual names are all the go these days and at least I can point to some family precedent on the subject (on DH's side: on mine, it would have been SO much worse!). So, what should I do when the school can generally spell it right, but none of the parents in the class do? I feel a heel, cos I know I wouldn't know about it if they hadn't been nice enough to invite her to parties, but I have tried to set them right before and they just aren't listening, I don't think. And don't even ask me about the ones who ask me her name and, when I've said it to them, turn to her and say it completely differently! It's only 5 letters long FGS, how hard can it be to get it right?

I couldn't imagine the situations in which people spelled your dogs name incorrectly. I haven't got a dog so I wondered.

janeite · 01/02/2008 14:33

DD has a very normal name, just 6 letters, but fil still spells it wrong - she's 10.

VinegarTits · 01/02/2008 14:36

I have a very normal name and my gran still spells it wrong, has been doing for the last 35 years, havent the heart to tell her, bless.

kayzr · 01/02/2008 14:39

People sent Freddie Christmas cards spelling it Freddy and that was my sister. He also go one saying Fredy but that was from the old woman we used to live near

sparklesandwine · 01/02/2008 14:53

We have friends and family that spell DS1 (10) and DD's (5) name wrong ALL the time even when i write cards from all of us and put their names in CAPITALS to emphasise how to spell them correctly!

they don't have odd names either there are just other ways to spell them - just fecking get it right is all i say

once i even resorted to spelling childrens names wrongly on purpose within my family as a 'tit for tat' thing , got the message across though!!

Squirdle · 01/02/2008 14:55

My name is Rebekah, but people always spell it Rebecca...even some family members! Tis always funny though as I say Rebekah with a 'kah' not a 'cca' and they get all befuddled. I reckon I should have been christened 'Rebekahwithakayayaitch' would have made it much easier

DS2 is Caleb, it's spelt how it sounds and still lots of people spell and pronounce it wrong and DS3 is Dylan...normal spelling...but nope, he is Dillon, even Dylon sometimes, at least most people can pronounce his name properly.

Oh and DS1 is Alex, just Alex, but everyone seems to want to write Alexander, so no-one can win even if you give your child a simple name!

cutekids · 01/02/2008 15:02

My middle name is Susanne (notice it's spelt with an S not a Z in the middle?) but no one has yet ever spelt it correctly....not even my Dad who was the one who thought of it in the first place. Bless him

cutekids · 01/02/2008 15:06

in fact, thinking about it, nobody ever spells all 3 of my names correctly in one go...only my Mum and me...!
I obviously have my hubbie's surname which I have great fun with because absolutely none of my friends can spell it but all think they can!

MrsEi25 · 01/02/2008 15:28

i do get a bit when DD get cards etc with her name spelt wrong. her name is sian and we get sharn, sharne, sain, shian,sianne... i thought it was an easy one to spell but people invent spellings i think i have also got a name which is often mis-spelt i am eileen and i have had irene, elaine, irlene, eilene, aislene, ellen... the list goes on... i have gotten a bit more mellow about my name but DDs still get my goat a bit
xx ei xx

Miaou · 01/02/2008 15:29

(I've forgotten who asked now but we pronounce Caitlin "Kate-Lynn", not "Cat-lynn" , if that's what you were getting at!!)

Miaou · 01/02/2008 15:36

stripeytiger · 01/02/2008 15:42

Just something you and your dd will have to live with I suppose, can imagine it is irritating but as others have said, if you choose an unusual name then unfortunately mis spelling etc are bound to happen.

Miaou · 01/02/2008 15:46

Um ... Suzan? Susanne? (I do like Susanne, I have to say)

bozza · 01/02/2008 20:29

miaou - I think the poster re the pronunciation of Caitlin was trying to get at the original Irish pronunciation on the lines of cough-lin. But we pronounce it the same as you and also call her her Caity for short. I was surprised at the other poster with the different spellings, because I have genuinely never come across anyone with a different spelling.

kayzr · 01/02/2008 20:35

Im Kayleigh and over the years I've seen so many spellings of my name. Kayley, Cayley, Kaylee, Caylea, Klee the list is endless

I get some interesting variations on my name. It used to wind me up, but now, I just think people are fuckwits and I cant be arsed to try and remove their fuckwittage.

Othersideofthechannel · 01/02/2008 20:37

Suzannah?
