should they refund

Tonight I went a bit nuts buying used clothes and a coat on ebay for a relatives daughter for over winter. I messed up, didnt realise how much I was spending and it ended up being over £100 which is more than I feel comfortable with. But even then I have realised that I was unknowingly buying things in the wrong size. They are way too big and they need clothes now. They wont have packaged, printed or sent anything yet. I have explained and asked for a refund but not sure if they will or have to.

No, I really don't think you can expect them to refund I'm afraid.

poefaced · 04/12/2022 23:27

Caveat emptor. You should have checked the sizes and costs before buying.

Going nuts isn’t an excuse.

If they refund you, they still have to pay eBay’s fees, so they will be out of pocket.

malmi · 04/12/2022 23:29

With eBay it's worth messaging them to request a cancellation. They won't be happy but ultimately if you let them deliver then raise a "not as described" dispute there's a good chance eBay will force the seller to accept a return. Please don't do that because it's not fair on the seller. But really no harm in asking if they'll cancel & refund.

Dbank · 04/12/2022 23:29

It's an auction site, you have legally committed to pay for the items.

MichelleScarn · 04/12/2022 23:31

@malmi Raising a dispute like that would be dishonest!

I didnt realise

pumpkincivilisation · 04/12/2022 23:36

Ask them nicely to cancel. They should accommodate that. I sell quite a bit on eBay and if buyer asks me to cancel transaction, I'd prefer to that than risking "item not as described " return. Buyers got more power than sellers on eBay from my experience, so your request most likely will be accommodated.

notdaddycool · 04/12/2022 23:38

If I planned to flood some stuff before Christmas then some decided no and I had to rest and it put me back a well I’d be fuming.

Yes hence "please don't do it" but selling on eBay has taught me that if the buyer doesn't want it then it's a fools errands to force them to take it. So indicating you have changed your mind could prompt them to offer a refund-minus-fees for example.

thelobsterquadrille · 04/12/2022 23:39

You can ask but you can't expect them to say yes.

eelieza · 04/12/2022 23:48

I feel so guilty now. I would accept a refund minus sellers fees. Thats enough ebay for one night.

I do not think it is at all fair of you to do anything but leave things as they are and pay the price. It was you who did it and noone else should suffer as a result.

You could ask, they may well do it, but it is cheeky as fuck. You did not shop at an online store that takes returns, you shopped on eBay, where a commitment to buy is just that. The right thing to do is to receive the stuff and sell it on eBay yourself if you do not want it. Were you drunk?

2023willbegreat · 04/12/2022 23:50

Sometimes listings say they will accept returns.

Do the listings of the things you bought say that?

PurpleButterflyWings · 04/12/2022 23:51

Ask them to cancel ASAP. They might do, and they should refund the money.

InconvenientPeg · 04/12/2022 23:53

A seller can cancel a sale and not lose fees, so hopefully they'll do that for you. If it was an auction, they should be able to offer it to the next lowest bid. It's annoying for them, as they might have to start the listing or auction again, but equally eBay is quite biased in favour of the buyer now, so they might think it's now worth their while to carry on with the sale, as you could give them bad feedback or whatever.

yoyy · 04/12/2022 23:53

I had a buyer bid on a collection only item saying sorry I didn't read the listing. It also took ages for her to reply to my when do you want collect emails. She asked me to cancel it & said other buyers do it for her all the time. I contacted ebay about refund of fees & she then left me bad feedback saying I refused to post the item!!

yoyy · 04/12/2022 23:54

sorry bit of a rant there but pls think before bidding.

Sorry but that is hilarious.

Having sold hundreds of items on eBay, I know how infuriating it is when a buyer "changes their mind", and comes up with some "reason" why they can't be a grown up and take responsibility for their actions.

Try reneging in a real auction....

yoyy · 05/12/2022 00:01

@namechange193297347298 i did laugh tbh, you couldn't make it up!

ehm if you hadnt realised the sizes and spent loads of money and all the seller had to do was cancel and relist you would want a refund to, if it was different i would understand but I informed them over an hour after buying they wont have packaged or sent anything

eelieza · 05/12/2022 00:13

@Dbank might I add they are clothes on ebay, not a house, so not that serious

What does “unknowingly” buying in the wrong size mean?
You made a mistake?
Or the listing was confusing?

Might be serious to the seller.

Could you just relist them?
