Paying off your mortgage?

Inspired by another thread.
We have what I *Think is a fairly small amount left on the mortgage-around £120 k, but working it out, I think we’ll be around age 69 by the time we’ve finished paying it off, I’m only basing this on how much we’ve paid off so far in the amount of years..69 feels disappointing.
We’re both 45 (Dh and I)

How old will you be when you’ve finished paying the mortgage off and how much do you have left?

31 - we sold in the southeast and moved to a rural Scotland with land and some outhouses we have converted since to give us income. Very, very lucky to be mortgage free.

RampantIvy · 04/12/2022 19:23

I'm 64. It was paid back several years ago, but I can't remember exactly when.

NormalNans · 04/12/2022 19:23

Surely when you take out a mortgage you take it out for a specific term so you’d know exactly when it will be paid off?

RobinRobinMouse · 04/12/2022 19:24

Wow, lots of people seem to be able to do it so young, we will be 63ish - 340kish to pay. We do overpay a bit when we can but will still average at roughly that I expect!

Pythonese · 04/12/2022 19:25

Inherited a large Victorian property in London but cost £120k to restore/refurbish. Paid that off in ten years. Both me and DH were 32.

Neuronamechange · 04/12/2022 19:25

Around 9,000 left. I’ll be 47. Overpay currently by £70 a month (previously more). Overall it will have knocked 7 years off the term.

We got on the housing ladder in 1979 when houses weren't the stupid prices they are now. The three bedroom terrace house cost just short of £11k.

TheChosenTwo · 04/12/2022 19:27

40 more months of 2.2K (we are over paying) I will be 41, but we are talking about moving so maybe not!! 😂

Lemonademoney · 04/12/2022 19:28

We would have been mortgage free last year but we moved! Now we are likely to be mid fifties unless we overpay (that’s the plan as that’s how we paid off last time). However that’s not factoring any potential disasters such as redundancy etc.

Freddiesextrateeth · 04/12/2022 19:29

Dead ! 😄 🤣
I dibt care tho its sure as he'll cheaper than rent !

CirreltheSquirrel · 04/12/2022 19:29

Probably 45 (next year) unless it makes more sense to keep it running and save/invest the money instead (at the moment I'm putting money into savings at a higher rate rather than overpaying, and when my fixed deal expires in September I'll have enough to just pay it off if interest rates have rocketed).

ChandlersDad · 04/12/2022 19:29

I was 28. We threw everything we could at it when we were DINKYS. Overpaid £500 per month, further chunks from savings and two modest inheritances.

Honeybirds87 · 04/12/2022 19:29

We've only just got our 30 year mortgage. I'll be 60 if we pay it off as written but we are hoping to over pay and get 5 years knocked off that

WinterLobelia · 04/12/2022 19:29

Hopefully within the next 5 years. It would have been much longer but sadly one of our older family members died and left us a little bit so we are going to prioritise the mortgage.

So, mid 50s and mid 60s.

MarkBright · 04/12/2022 19:30

First time 38, second time 47. Offset, overpaying and been incredibly lucky to be born when I was and not a bit later.

Nevermind31 · 04/12/2022 19:30

Lastchristmasibakedyouatart · 04/12/2022 19:00

@TomTraubertsBlues Looking at it, it says redemption date is 2046, so 36 years, seems an odd number 🤷🏻‍♀️So we’ll be 69, I was right 😒

if you can overpay it will take years off your mortgage. Once interest rates have settled it may also be worth speaking to a mortgage adviser. Often, you can loose tears off the mortgage without increasing your payment massively.

sanityisamyth · 04/12/2022 19:34

I'm nearly 40. Hoping to take out a mortgage next year to buy a house ... will probably be dead by the time I can pay it off!

changeling2022 · 04/12/2022 19:34

57 hopefully

WhatsitWiggle · 04/12/2022 19:35

Current mortgage would be paid off when I'm 60. But I'll need to start over as divorcing so then it'll be the longest I can get - at least 65. Unless I downsize at some point in the future.

MrsMontyD · 04/12/2022 19:36

I'm planning to be mortgage free at 50, should have been 45 if I hadn't had to remortgage to pay off my exH.

Inasec24 · 04/12/2022 19:36

About 59 I think

WaddleAway · 04/12/2022 19:36

68 for me. Currently no chance to overpay, I have had to leave my job to care for my disabled child and we can barely afford repayments as it is. Maybe that will change in the future, we’ll see.

Peedoffo · 04/12/2022 19:37

We are 29 and 35 its already paid off but our mortgage is now 1 years salary. Upsizing in the next few years .

pocketvenuss · 04/12/2022 19:38

TomTraubertsBlues · 04/12/2022 18:49

Forgot to add, we have £104k left. Paying off just over 3k per mth.

I'm confused. If you have £104k and are paying £3k a month, how are you paying it off in around a year?

SingingSands · 04/12/2022 19:38

I'll be 49, if we don't overpay.
