Paying off your mortgage?

Inspired by another thread.
We have what I *Think is a fairly small amount left on the mortgage-around £120 k, but working it out, I think we’ll be around age 69 by the time we’ve finished paying it off, I’m only basing this on how much we’ve paid off so far in the amount of years..69 feels disappointing.
We’re both 45 (Dh and I)

How old will you be when you’ve finished paying the mortgage off and how much do you have left?

I was 52.

DiscoBeat · 04/06/2023 02:18

30, but with inheritance. Every silver lining has a cloud.

ErnestCelendine · 04/06/2023 10:01

Late 50s/early 60s if life carries on as it is, and depending on if we can up the overpayments.

Pourmeanotherwine · 04/06/2023 10:04

Had planned on 58, but ended up paying it off earlier as DH got some inheritance money from his parents.

CambsAlways · 04/06/2023 13:13

48

GoddessOfFire · 04/06/2023 13:14

68 - I got divorced and essentially started again. Worth it though!

Findyourneutralspace · 04/06/2023 13:15

67 as it stands

Aprilx · 04/06/2023 13:19

I was 43 and DH was 39. We didn’t overpay, we saved and paid it off in one chunk at the end. I maintained a spreadsheet with target savings against actual and it helped us stay on track, we had to save up about £200k.

ChopSuey2 · 04/06/2023 13:26

52 is the official end of the term but I'm overpaying so hoping to get that down. Overpaying may not be possible when I remortgage in a couple of years with the interest rate rises though...

StormShadow · 04/06/2023 13:31

53 as it stands, but we overpay so probably 50ish.

Justcuriouser · 04/06/2023 13:50

70 but we have 4 teenagers and it's very £££. Plan to overpay when they leave home.

You really need to know how big someone's overall assets are. They could have small mortgage but no pension or vice versa. Or they could have a big house woth a big mortgage but plan to downsize.

Paid off at 53 should have been 48 but we borrowed extra

From what I've seen of friends who borrowed extra this is definitely what causes problems. It's so easy to do it but not always a good idea and sadly things can go wrong with your job or your life.
We paid ours off years ago thankfully (we're retired) and now live in a small place which is a relief in many ways. If you have a house that's enough for what you need it's not always right to buy something bigger or ritzier or in your perfect area. Never forget that you have nothing to prove, you don't need to show that you can afford something better.
Once your DC leave home your needs change anyway.

StormShadow · 04/06/2023 16:47

Actually it's 51 not 53. I can't count, apparently.

StrawberrySquash · 04/06/2023 16:55

68, but I hope to overpay and bring that down by at least 5 years. Hopefully I get a pay rise in the autumn!

CheshireCat1 · 04/06/2023 18:00

I was 42, we bought a doer upper and took our time renovating.

Sunnysunbun · 04/06/2023 18:02

I had mine paid off at 40 so we sold up and got a bigger house. It will be paid off when I am 55.

Nodancingshoes · 04/06/2023 18:20

About 60 - 100k left to pay. I would love to overpay but the spare money is always needed elsewhere unfortunately...

Hedjwitch · 06/06/2023 21:35

I'll be 62.

Tigofigo · 06/06/2023 21:51

63

We were overpaying for a few years by about £500 a month, which will bring it down a bit, but since getting new interest rates and cost of everything rising I doubt we'll overpay quite so much.
