To leave sleeping child in locked car?

Wouldyoudothisiwonder · 04/12/2022 11:05

Went to supermarket to get prescription for DD(2) and she fell asleep on the way. Would you lock the car and leave her sleeping while you run in? Or not?

I don’t think this is a good idea. If you were literally one minute and could see the car at all times (like paying for petrol) then fine. Otherwise get someone else to do it for you or carry the child / put the child in a buggy and take them in.

Ok. You’ve obviously got time on your hands too, I see. Ok. I’m not justifying anything, just telling you what I would do (have done) and why. You having a problem with that is your problem, not mine. What is disastrous and indefensible about it? It’s a very short amount of time. Were he awake, I’d take him with me as he likes to sit in the trolley and hold the scanner.

You have to assess risk and come to a logical conclusion. You haven’t really explained what you think is likely to happen inside the two minutes when asleep. Do you ever leave your children alone? Are you a parent who drags her children to the toilet with her when she wants a poo? Do you sit awake and watch them when they sleep at night in case of….something? Do you allow them any independence to play, learn to climb, fall and where their own physical boundaries are in order to learn their own assessments of risk? Or is it all too dangerous in your eyes?

This is ridiculous now
I don’t watch my children sleep

I see now that you are trying to paint me as hyper vigilant on the basis of my saying I wouldn’t leave any of them in the car out of
my sight including the scenario under discussion here. That’s quite a reach and is just more of the same a* covering nonsense.

this isn’t about testing their boundaries and gradually allowing them more independence. o think you know that and are just chucking me one scenario after another in the expectation I will agree

I won’t.

She woke up as it happened - just honestly trying to minimise an unwell child’s needs Flowers

Well in Ireland last week a Dad left his 16 year old daughter in the car momentarily while he went into an office. Car was robbed, robber killed, girl left with life changing injuries

I’m not trying to make you agree with me. I wasn’t trying to make anyone agree with me if they didn’t already. I’m just sharing my viewpoint. I certainly don’t need your accession to my way of thinking, I don’t care about you.You undermined yourself by calling me names as it made you seem very worked up.

I do wonder if you might be heading towards hyper vigilance simply because I’ve asked what you would believe could happen in two minutes or less while asleep in a car, and you didn’t reply. And I have suggested that you might apply that level of fear to life with your children in the home. Where children are far more likely to encounter danger.

As I said, I’m bed bound today, with a torn ligament. I’ve never spent this level of time on a thread before. You were a bit aggressive towards me so I engaged out of interest.

This is a grown up forum by the way, you don’t need to asterisk ‘ass’, or ‘arse’ if you’re British. It’s not the swearing, it’s personal attacks that got your earlier post deleted I suspect.

What on earth happened whereby both the robber and the girl were injured? Was a third party involved?

Thanks for the head up about there being no need to blank out expletives
I was being tongue in cheek but never mind

and as for my “heading towards hyper vigilance “‘I did have to laugh. As a lone parent to three children from birth of third and them all being under 4 I didn’t have time for that and haven’t had since.

I just don’t leave them in the car unattended while I go off to somewhere I can’t see them as tempting as it might be especially for someone like me.

For those of you saying you'd happily leave your children in a locked car, how long should an observer wait before calling the police? Ten minutes? Half an hour? An hour? All day? Very interested to know where your 'safe' time expires.

I'd be particularly interested in your reply to this post @Herejustforthisone as you seem to be the main poster on this thread who thinks it's fine?

Wouldyoudothisiwonder · 05/12/2022 07:24

Surprised this is still going on.

Interesting that none of you who care so much for children’s safety have asked how my child is.

Ring the pharmacy, explain the situation and ask if anyone is willing to bring it out to you. They might say no but it's worth a try. 😊

Wouldyoudothisiwonder · 04/12/2022 11:14

Yes, Whiskey, just trying to work out what the best thing is to do. The pharmacy is right near the entrance of the supermarket, it would probably only be a five minute job - but points taken.

5 min!!? No way, anything could happen. Someone will probably call the cops. I don't even think this is legal??!

Tbf you failed in your opening post to even mention your daughter was ill. But then that would have slanted the answers wouldn't it?

Ha! I’ve not RTFT, I didn’t need to, to know what the majority of responses would be. But to snipe at people, who were rightly outraged at the idea of leaving a 2 year old in a car park out of your sight, for not asking how they are is laughable. They’ve shown more concern for your child than you have.

Oh I see, I’ve been tagged back in.

As I said, many times, I’d be gone no longer than two minutes, so if an observer saw me leave, somehow saw my sleeping child behind the very tinted windows of my car instantly, and immediately stood fretting about it, I’d still be back and sitting in my car before their hand even made it up to their neck to reach for their pearls.

PoseyFlump · 05/12/2022 07:46

So @Herejustforthisone your line is two minutes, no more? What happens if there's a queue? What about people who think ten minutes or half an hour is okay? It's a slippery slope IMO.

Hi OP, I’m new to this thread. How is your child? And by the way, my mother read over my shoulder and was aghast at the idea of leaving a child in the car. I gently reminded her that she left me locked in the car with such frequency that she kept a blanket in the car that would be thrown over me to hide me from kidnappers. “That was different,” she said. 🤔

I said all this in conversation yesterday. Just read my posts.

Tigger7654 · 05/12/2022 08:16

I did this once at a petrol station with both my babies in the back, I was only going to be 2 minutes. Dropped the car keys without realising on way in! Luckily they slept through the 10 minutes of panic where myself and the staff members all ran about looking for them (they'd fallen out of sight), while thinking I was a prat. I didn't do it again!

To get a prescription filled if and this is the very amazing if...no body else is waiting already, takes over 5 minutes so that makes nearer 10 than 2 unless of course you don't mean a prescription at all and your grabbing an off the counter scan yourself useless crappy cough mixture and even then 2 would be a dream.

If you didn't change your name your posts would be easier to read....just accept most sensible people think your unreasonable to even think about putting your child's safety....and I don't mean the unlikely stuff like car crashes, second to your convenience....no matter if she had woken that's life if she needs the medication.....how you got a prescription on a weekend is a miracle by the way.

Oh please, please, please read my posts. I’m not the OP obviously but I’ve been tagged back in by a few posters. I was fairly busy on the thread yesterday. The lovely woman at the pharmacy collects scripts from everyone in the queue in one go to take to the pharmacists. At that point we’re advised to go and do some shopping and come back in ten or so. I go back to the car at that point. Then I just co and collect the bag once the allotted time has past. The pharmacy is by the door and it stops queues building up.

Well apparently the pharmacy fairy godmother collects all the prescriptions in one go from everyone waiting there and she is off again back to the car.

In years of waiting in a pharmacy for a prescription with other people I’ve never seen an employee do this. They take individual prescriptions and then check they have it in stock.

but of course she’ll be along to tell
me otherwise and that this slippery slope never applies to her

Hugasauras · 05/12/2022 09:48

We are in a village and the lovely doctor at our practice often phones in or sends over prescriptions to the little pharmacy so they're just ready to be collected. Off topic but some places you can just pop in and out!

Actually, you originally said 5 minutes, which then more than halved when you realised you were massively in the minority.

You're just one of those insufferable posters that digs at people slyly to get a reaction, then once they snap, feign shock that they've got angry. Then reports their tame (I saw them) posts and pretends mumsnet has done taken it upon themselves to intervene.

Just another boring poster who will give the line "I'm on bed rest pregnant/have covid/torn tendons" or whatever, for the reason you've spent all day responding to a thread, then belittle anybody else who has, despite having no idea of their situation.

You twist replies to fit your narrative, and anybody who doesn't agree with you is either neurotic or angst ridden.

For some reason you seem to think the fact your child doesn't care if they wake up ill and alone with no idea where you are is a feather in your parent of the year cap. It isn't. It doesn't make them well-adjusted and confident... it's actually quite sad this is the norm for them.
