to expect clothing to be wrapped

Ok, I get the "bring your own bag" thing. I always bring my own bag, My question is, if I buy an item of clothing from, eg, M&S, AIBU to expect they will wrap it in something like tissue paper, so that it doesn't just go in my bag with everything else? What if it gets marked, or damaged? How do I return it? I don't mind paying for one of their bags, but surely the point is to reduce the use of plastic bags? Why can't they just put some tissue around it (like many independent stores do?). M&S and Debenhams are two of the biggest culprits here. Debenhams actually gave me an unwrapped bra to to take home!! I had to stuff it in my pocket!!! (didn't have a spare bag with me that day).

Tissue just rips though. It won't actually prevent damage if there is something in your bag that is likely to stain or tear the garment.

angelikacpickles · 03/12/2022 17:57

Do clothes shops not give paper bags?

DuplicateUserName · 03/12/2022 17:58

A tissue won't do anything.

If you don't have a spare bag, just buy one.

chipsandpeas · 03/12/2022 17:58

theres still debenhams shops?

DiaDeLluvia · 03/12/2022 17:58

you could bring your own bags which you know are clean if you’re going clothes shopping. and a grocery one too so you can keep things separate

medicatedgift · 03/12/2022 17:59

Where are you shopping at Debenhams?

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 17:59

Take multiple bags then

Westendbuoys · 03/12/2022 17:59

Is this new to you? It's been like this for years. Either buy a bag or take your own.

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 18:00

And why would you wrap a bra? Did you not want to buy a bag for it?

pairofrollerskates · 03/12/2022 18:01

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 17:59

Take multiple bags then

so nobody buys clothes on an impromptu basis then?

I think she's shopping in 2018.

Yes, you put the top or trousers or whatever in the bag you've brough from home. That doesnt mean putting it in with everything else slopping around in the bag, and water bottles, shopping, etc etc. Those little fold out pouch bags are ideal. Tissue would not make an iota of difference.

PhilippaPhilpot · 03/12/2022 18:01

YABU. Even paper bags and tissue paper costs the earth the produce, and as mentioned above isn't invincible to spills/tears.

You should be more organised and take enough suitable bags for shopping. Cotton bags are good as they are washable and light to carry and you can sling them over your shoulder.

xyzandabc · 03/12/2022 18:02

YABU. What a waste of tissue paper and time. You know your bag is clean, you know what is in your bag already. How is anything going to get marked or damaged?

If you have something already in your bag that might mark or damage something else, you buy a bag and put offending item in it to protect everything else. Or remove offending item from said bag and just carry it.

As for the bra, why did it need a bag if it would fit in your pocket? If you didn't want it in your pocket, just buy a bag.

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 18:03

If its impromptu then buy a bag

MumGoneMild · 03/12/2022 18:04

Its not the retailers fault you don’t want to-buy A bag

you were not forced to carry the bra without you choose too

ShirleyPhallus · 03/12/2022 18:04

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 18:03

What happens if I want to buy an impromptu bag but have no bag to put the impromptu bag in?

Yes and i buy a bag...

Smartiepants79 · 03/12/2022 18:08

Debenhams doesn’t exist anymore does it??
Bring your own bags or buy a clean one if it bother you so much.
Large chain stores have never really done this.

pairofrollerskates · 03/12/2022 18:01

Then you buy a bag. They are good quality now so can be reused over and over. We would use them to drop off clothes at charity shops or the uniform pool and so on so we do lose some that way. I take my own bags to the supermarket and a backpack with a carry bag in it if I'm going into town, but if I get caught out and need a bag then I buy one.

luxxlisbon · 03/12/2022 18:11

Just don’t put it in a dirty bag or with things that can make it dirty. If you’re that predacious you can just buy a separate bag if you’re caught short.

Yourwan · 03/12/2022 18:13

Do clothes shops in the UK not give out paper bags? Here all shops that have clothes give out paper bags for free.

Oysterbabe · 03/12/2022 18:14

No I wouldn't expect that.
I just stuff them in a bag with other stuff and don't give it a minutes thought.

I don’t know about the rest of the UK but the bag levy includes paper bags in NI. I’ve paid 25p for a paper bag!

ouch321 · 03/12/2022 18:15

I would just chuck it in the same bag as the groceries.
Why does it have to be separate?
The only time I'd not want to do that is if I knew one of the food or drink items I'd purchased was leaking.
