to expect clothing to be wrapped

Ok, I get the "bring your own bag" thing. I always bring my own bag, My question is, if I buy an item of clothing from, eg, M&S, AIBU to expect they will wrap it in something like tissue paper, so that it doesn't just go in my bag with everything else? What if it gets marked, or damaged? How do I return it? I don't mind paying for one of their bags, but surely the point is to reduce the use of plastic bags? Why can't they just put some tissue around it (like many independent stores do?). M&S and Debenhams are two of the biggest culprits here. Debenhams actually gave me an unwrapped bra to to take home!! I had to stuff it in my pocket!!! (didn't have a spare bag with me that day).

This is the way it's been for at least 5 years with Debenhams closing just after Covid.....so very strange that either it's just bothering you now or have you lost track of time?
Put a fold up bag in your handbag always useful for unplanned purchases.....or pay 10p.....even paper bags are charged for in many shops.

Yeah ok OP, another wind up thread. Please inform us all when you last purchased a bra in Debenhams?

YABU - either bring your own bags or buy one, it's not rocket science.

I have carried at least one small foldable shopping bag (but usually about 3/4) in my handbag for years just in case I need it for random shopping - picking up bread and milk after work; nipping into B&M for some cleaning supplies and buying all sorts of random tat etc - but if I didn't have a bag of my own (or it was filled with stuff already) then I'd just buy a new one as a one off.

I don’t know about the rest of the UK but the bag levy includes paper bags in NI. I’ve paid 25p for a paper bag!

Oh I didn't know that. I'm in Ireland and I don't think we pay for paper bags? Pretty much every shop except grocery shops use paper bags as standard, I hope I haven't been paying extra all these years and been completely unaware!

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 18:41

I'm in Scotland and all bags have to be paid for whether paper or plastic

Sparklingbrook · 03/12/2022 18:44

YABU, either keep a reusable bag in your handbag/pocket or buy one. It's not that problematic is it?

As for returns I think the days are long gone when you took them back in the shop's own bag.

softpilllow · 03/12/2022 18:52

Debenhams? You haven't been in town for a while, have you?
