To be annoyed with Call the Midwife

I've been rewatching from the start and of all the things to be annoyed about it’s Dr Turner writing left handed 🤣

Clearly as I know nothing about medicine or midwifery they could be showing all sorts that’s wrong and I’d have no clue but this is bugging me.

I think it’s time for a cuppa!

Is that because he would have been made to write right handed at that time. I know my MIL was forced to write right handed at school

BlueThursday · 03/12/2022 10:43

Yes sorry I wasn’t clear: because it would have been thrashed out of him; not because I have an aversion to left handedness 🤣

I’m not sure if it would have been thrashed out of him by this point in time? He was presumably at school in the 20s/30s and the world was a bit more enlightened by that point.

BlueThursday · 03/12/2022 10:45

My father, born in 52, had it thrashed out of him.

my mother, born 63, was skelped a few times with a ruler but she was stubborn and stayed left handed

My MIL is 70 it was definitely thrashed out of her

It was thrashed out of my auntie who was born in the 50s!
There's probably lots of inaccuracies, but that's an interesting one to pick up 😆

Kerantli · 03/12/2022 10:46

I think you're being a little bit U, but that's because I'm left handed and always delighted when I spot someone else who is.

BUT I also know what you mean, it would have been seen as sinful to be lefthanded and beaten out of him

CherieBabySpliffUp · 03/12/2022 10:49

My sister was born in '79 and when she started primary school my mother was asked by her teacher if they should make her use her right hand!

toomuchlaundry · 03/12/2022 10:54

@CherieBabySpliffUp my MIL was asked that about her son (my DH) which would have been about then. After her experience of having it thrashed out her she said no!

FlirtyMelons · 03/12/2022 10:57

It's not true in all cases though, my nan was born in 1914 and was left handed, she was never asked to write right handed at school ever, loads of my elderly family members were left handed and never had an issue.

That’s great I hate that the world is set for right ganders

My father was born in 1942 and didn't have it thrashed out of him; FIL was born in 1924 and nor did he!

Georgeskitchen · 03/12/2022 11:00

My old primary teacher who was probably born in the early part of last century could write with both hands. He told us that he had been forced to use his right hand as a child. I imagine that Dr Turner, as soon as he no longer had a sadistic teacher standing over him in class, reverted naturally back to left handedness

toomuchlaundry · 03/12/2022 11:00

Maybe it depends whether it was a Church school or the teacher was particularly religious/malicious

AccioChocolate · 03/12/2022 11:01

Did left handers usually continue with their right hand as adults?

Londonnight · 03/12/2022 11:02

My dad was born in 1936 and didn't have it thrashed out of him [ maybe they tried, I have no idea ]. He is now 86 and still very much left handed.

I am left handed also, left school mid 90s and things were still definitely set up for right handed people, it was very frustrating. When I say never had an issue I mean they were never forced to be right handed but even through the 80s/90s there were still difficulties for sure as equipment was right handed rather than being suitable for both or having some left handed stuff.

My DS1 is 16 and eats left handed, he was told off at school by the dinner lady for it, his form teacher had words with the lunch time staff and said he was allowed to eat how he wants.

My dad didn't

ArtixLynx · 03/12/2022 11:04

my mum is 70, my dad, were he alive, would be 72. Both were lefties and never had it 'thrashed' out of either of them. Yes, they were both encouraged to write Right handed, but both reverted back to writing with their left once they left school.

Dotingmumandgranny · 03/12/2022 11:05

I was born in 1953 and never had an issue with being left handed.

Mrsjayy · 03/12/2022 11:06

I was wondering what you were on about 🤔 my aunt was a left hander apparently had a terrible time at school but she just went back to writing with her left hand once she left school, I imagine Dr T would have done the same !

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 03/12/2022 11:06

I have to say my 1940s born left handed dad has very hard to read handwriting, which he attributes to the difficulties of using a fountain pen (which they had to use) with your left hand. My husband, also left handed (nearly all the men in my life are left-handed for some reason) born in the 1960s has very legible writing - he learned to write with a modern pen.

AngelontopoftheTree · 03/12/2022 11:08

My auntie, who is 70, still writes right handed but does everything else left hand, e.g. cutting, sewing, dealing cards ( these are the things I remember from childhood)

TrashyPanda · 03/12/2022 11:09

My Dad was born in 1921 (not in the U.K.) and was made to write with his right hand at school. He never spoke of any corporal punishment though.

he became ambidextrous and could use either hand to write with. Once biros came out he preferred to use his left hand.
(old pen and ink would get smudged if you used your left hand to write with)
