DS has fever and sore throat - strep A?

So my DS 4 came down with a fever overnight and has a sore throat. He’s had some calpol and has gone back to sleep. I would normally let something like this run it’s course, but it’s concerning with the Strep A reports and seems that getting antibiotics early is the best thing if it ends up being Strep A.

AIBU to call 111 and try and get an out of hours?

I would. Having had strep A throat twice and ending up in hospital I don’t take any chances any more.

Raindancer411 · 03/12/2022 09:46

If in doubt call 111. It's always best :)

Ostryga · 03/12/2022 09:47

You can buy swabs online to check if it happens again in the future, but tbh with the way this is going I’d go to a walk in or yeah phone 111 ask for a swab and get antibiotics asap. No point messing about with it. Hope he feels better asap!

Interesting, I have my mind year old on the sofa with a sore throat, cough, leg pain and temperature. It isn't crazy high and no rash so I've just been keeping a close eye on him with general care and paracetamol. We had a letter from school saying there were several children I'll in school with what appeared you be a viral and they are monitoring situation.

I thought they wouldn't be able to swab easily and could just as easily be COVID. The news stories are frightening though.

Covidwoes · 03/12/2022 09:57

My 4 year old DD has a temp today. It's currently 38.3 and isn't coming down with ibuprofen. She said her throat isn't sore though, and no rashes. Keeping a close eye.

Strep A in the throat doesn’t present with a rash but muscle pains can be a sign to look out for that it’s more than just a sore throat.

Mine has sore throat too. Ive been told to keep eye out for white coating on tongue and/or very red strawberry looking tongue. She has nether so far and is fine with neurofen so i think its just viral for now but keeping a close eye.

Yes I imagine lots of parents worrying about poorly children this weekend. Do post back what 111 advise for you little one @badgerandfox227 and hope he recovers soon.

Mine is still eating soft food (three croissant so far this morning!) So I'm thinking throat pain can't be that severe but definitely keeping closer watch than I usually would

Whattodo182 · 03/12/2022 10:20

I'd be calling 111 or booking a GP appointment.
No one here can diagnose your child.

crussont · 03/12/2022 10:23

Call 111. That is what they are there for.

Hotchocfudgecake · 03/12/2022 10:23

My 2yr old has similar, sore throat, fever, muscle aches, very lethargic and sleepy. 111 have said he needs to be seen and we are just about to head out to the a&e we’ve been told to go to.

Welshwabbit · 03/12/2022 10:26

If you've any covid tests in the house might be worth trying that. My son had these symptoms and I tested for covid because scarlet fever is going round his school - better covid than scarlet fever! He did have covid. There's a lot of it about.

Retsina24 · 03/12/2022 10:27

With the news as it is I think I'd call 111 for advice, whereas usually I'd just be managing with calpol, cuddles etc.

On the flip side, I wonder what this is going to do to our already stretched health service when they are swamped with, understandably worried, parents in a similar situation.
Hope your lo is OK OP. X

Rhino94 · 03/12/2022 10:36

i echo everyone else’s responses, worth getting checked out, not worth the risk. Hope he’s ok x

Lougle · 03/12/2022 10:49

I was in Boots this morning and the pharmacist was telling me that they can't get the appropriate antibiotic in. They're really worried about it because Drs are more likely to prescribe because of the recent deaths, and their suppliers just don't have it.

GG1986 · 03/12/2022 11:45

Someone at my childs school has scarlett fever, fever, sore throat and cough on wednesday, rash appeared on Friday. Call 111 for advice.

Facecream · 03/12/2022 12:31

My DD has had tonsillitis 4 times since September- I had it too and had to have antibiotics as it was extremely sore. There are a lot of sick children around. Hope DS is ok OP

Badgerandfox227 · 03/12/2022 12:48

I’ve called 111, had a call back off a GP and said sounds like virus as he has a runny nose and a bit of a cough. So going to keep him hydrated and comfy with calpol.

just so worrying when they’re poorly isn’t it xx

Just to add, I wasn’t asking on MN for a diagnosis, I was asking whether people thought it was reasonable to call 111, as I usually wouldn’t bother them with a fever and a sore throat.

Our local OOH (who have been contacted for us via 111) have said we could now be waiting up to 24h for a call back. This is my DD's tongue. Any ideas?!

Exactly
Totally correct to get them checked out but this is going to be a nightmare. Nurses strike soon too...

Smurf123 · 03/12/2022 14:01

Our out of hours prescribed antibiotics without even seeing our 4 year old for sore throat and headache as precaution said that is the approach they are taking right now as they don't have time to see everyone so unless worried they'd just prescribe antibiotics over the phone

MadameDe · 03/12/2022 14:03

I called 111 today. It was over an hour to speak to someone so don't wait.
