DS has fever and sore throat - strep A?

So my DS 4 came down with a fever overnight and has a sore throat. He’s had some calpol and has gone back to sleep. I would normally let something like this run it’s course, but it’s concerning with the Strep A reports and seems that getting antibiotics early is the best thing if it ends up being Strep A.

AIBU to call 111 and try and get an out of hours?

That story is genuinely terrifying. My 5 year old has a slight temperature and I'm going to get him to sleep in my bed tonight so I can get an eye on him.

I've literally just said the same about my 6 year old

I said the same to my DH last night. The tooth fairy was on her way but I told sick DD that I'm sure she'd come after we all got better. I wanted to keep an eye on her.

My DDs cheeks are awfully red now but we were told exactly the same as you, OP. Massive red and spotty tonsils, fever, body aches, sore throat and now coughing has kicked in. Apart from slapped cheek or scarlet fever, I just can't think why she'd have the red cheeks.

Has she been put on antibiotics?

I'm an otherwise fit and well 35 year old with no underlying conditions/vulnerabilities. I'm currently sat in hospital (day 8) with Strep A Pneumonia. I've been on round the clock IV antibiotics for 7 days noe and currently have a chest drain fitted for the fluid on my lung.

It took a week from me first displaying cold symptoms to being in so much pain I contacted 111. Every doctor who has seen me can't quite keep the concern at just how strong my infection is from their face.

If in doubt, don't wait. This infection is not messing around.

That's horrendous. Are you improving at all?

LittleBear21 · 06/12/2022 10:30

I'm still in hospital as of today (day 11). I have improved alot and thankfully avoided being on a ventilator. But my chest drain is still in as I have several liters of fluid on my left lung and it has to be drained slowly. Hoping to be out of hospital by the end of this week, but no guarantees.

Just an aside but I really think its time they change the rules to let qualified pharmacists prescribe antibiotics.

They already allow pharmacists to prescribe antibiotics. But they need to be qualified as a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber. PIP is a practice certificate that allows them to prescribe autonomously for conditions within their clinical competence. It includes most medicines classified as Schedule 2, 3, 4, or 5 Controlled Drugs (except diamorphine, dipipanone, or cocaine for addiction treatment).

I got prescribed an antibiotic for a UTI infection last year by the PIP near work.

Nowaynits · 06/12/2022 21:54

@ofwarren No they are reluctant due to the potential for antibiotic resistance. Apparently no spots on tonsils = no strep.

How's your DS today @Badgerandfox227? My DD has the same symptoms. Is the rash still there?

God I can’t imagine what you’ve been through. Thank fuck you avoided the ventilator. How are you feeling now?

Sending so much love your way and hopefully that left lung pulls its socks up a bit and starts cooperating!

Yes he still has the rash on his face, but seems much brighter thankfully. Will be keeping an eye on him over next few days. I do wonder that the GP probably should have swabbed him to be on the safe side.

Contrary to popular belief strep a does not always cause a high temperature. So any concerns pls call your gp. If you are still concerned do not be fobbed off. Several of the children who are critically ill or have died were fobbed of several times before it was picked up. You are your child's advocate so shout as loud as you meed to be heard and seen.

LittleBear21 · 07/12/2022 09:35

I am actually feeling pretty good. But I'm on IV antibiotics 3 times a day still. The critical thing is to get all the infected fluid out from my lung lining. If it isn't all drained, I'll slip backwards as soon as the antibiotics stop.

Badgerandfox227 · 07/12/2022 12:40

I’m going to call the GP back again after lunch as DS has gone downhill again, temp back up at 39, he’s sleeping on the sofa, says he has a sore throat. This will be his 6th day of fever.

Badgerandfox227 sounds like he needs antibiotics.

My DS fever went after day 5 however its now day 9 and his temperature went back up last night and he now has a chesty cough. Gp prescribed antibiotics over the phone. he is getting capsules as the liquid is running out

Badgerandfox227 · 08/12/2022 02:38

Thanks, a family friend checked him over and again happy not strep A just a nasty virus. I will contact the GP again on Friday if still has a fever, as that’s what they asked us to do on Monday. Hopefully he’s brighter in the morning.
