To not recycle the peanut butter jar?

Stillgoingwell · 01/12/2022 21:45

I don’t eat the peanut butter. ( I would but once I start I can’t stop). DH Orr DD always leaves the PB jar and lid ‘soaking’. This turns the remains ( and today there seemed to be a lot of remains) into a gluey, glutinous mess. I started to clean them out but as the first globby blob hit the sink, I thought to heck with this, and threw it in the bin. Am I bad?

Tell your family- those who leave the jars soaking- to wash the bloody things and put them in the recycling.

GimmeSleep · 02/12/2022 10:30

For those letting their dogs lick out the jars watch out for Xylitol

Can dogs eat peanut butter?

Mammillaria · 02/12/2022 10:32

You shouldn't do it. Your DH or DD should.

Quite surprised so many people think you are lazy for not cleaning up other people's messes.

Ialwayswannasometimes · 02/12/2022 10:36

Surely at some point, all the washing and hot water etc is worse than just not recycling it? Given that most of the plastics we 'recycle' doesn't even end up being recycled anyway

Alysskea · 02/12/2022 10:41

Bin it!!! Life’s too short

Iwantmyoldnameback · 02/12/2022 10:42

I'm happy to recycle but not sure wasting heat and water is in anyone's interest, especially in this day of astronomical fuel bills.

TerraNostra · 02/12/2022 10:43

Do you not have a dishwasher?

Mischance · 02/12/2022 10:44

Pop it in the dishwasher. I do.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 02/12/2022 10:44

I wasn’t aware recycling had to be spotless. I do rinse but if there’s a bit of stuff left in the bottom I didn’t think it mattered.

Soontobe60 · 02/12/2022 10:45

Why are people washing out jars before they go into the recycling bin? You do know that its not necessary? That the glass is washed when it goes to the recycling plant? That your washing of the jar impacts the environment more through the use of water and energy?

Stop this nonsense!!!

mogtheexcellent · 02/12/2022 10:45

Dont give yourself a stern talking too, its your DH who should be dealing with it. Hmm

hot water from tap, lid on, shake, repeat as necessary.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/12/2022 10:46

Why the heck are you cleaning up after their half arsed job?

Next time you find a manky soaking jar shout DH and tell him he forgot to finish cleaning it.

If he doesn't sort it then feel free to pop the lid back on and leave it places that will irritate him.

Do not continue to clean up after him (same for DD assuming she's old enough to clean up after herself).

FayCarew · 02/12/2022 10:46

@Soontobe60 , our council says to only put clean things in the recycling bin

TheWayOfTheWorld · 02/12/2022 10:47

Devoutspoken · 01/12/2022 21:57

I put them in the dishwasher

This. Peanut butter is the work of the devil though Envy

BarbaraofSeville · 02/12/2022 10:54

This seems to be sensible advice.

thefirstmile.co.uk/the-big-picture/do-you-have-to-wash-your-recycling

There are lots of other pages on the internet that suggest that recycling does have to be washed before putting in the bin, but I will choose to ignore that in favour of something published by an actual waste sorting company.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 02/12/2022 10:57

Teach your lazy family members to make peanut sauce, and get them to make dinner. Some boiling water in the jar then shake it.
I find you get less peanut butter stuck to the jar if it's kept stored upside down (with lid securely fastened!) while in use.

hotdiggetydog · 02/12/2022 10:58

They wash it anyway at recycling so makes no difference

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/12/2022 11:16

Onnabugeisha · 01/12/2022 22:35

Same here.
It’s just laziness to not recycle something because it takes a bit of effort to clean.

It's not the OP's laziness though, being as she doesn't eat it.

OP - it does fine in the dishwasher but otherwise it's your husband/daughters job to wash it.

Thank you, I will check.

This is exactly what I do.
Also consider re use. I save jam jars for the school fair- they do a jam jar stall.
I save decent ice cream tubs etc to freeze stuff in. etc

TheCatterall · 01/12/2022 22:09

Spatula to remove bits.
Hot water. and washing up liquid.
arm workout/shake.

tadahhhh. Done.

im not super fussed about them being spotless as they are cleaned etc at the recycling centre.

Or just lobbed in with the general waste and not recycled at all once collected as our old binman reliably informed us.

georgarina · 02/12/2022 12:08

WTF? Not your mess, not your responsibility

Because our council tell us to do so and give us strict instructions that if the bin contains anything with food on it the whole lot will be rejected. HTH.

Well, not all recycling centres use the same technology/machinery. You evidently live in an area where the council will take unwashed recycling, but I don’t.

Also, I have to store my recycling inside my flat (no outside space) and they only collect once a fortnight. If I didn’t wash out the jars, plastic trays and pots the recycling bin would absolutely reek after about 48 hours.

I don’t recycle cat food tins but try and wash out as many other things as I can

Why? I prefer tins because I can sling them in the recycling. Sachets I still recycle but I have to collect a batch and take them somewhere.
