Expensive unwanted gift- what to do?

I have a lovely friend who is very dear to me - but she is absolutely terrible at presents.
It was recently my birthday - and she bought me a very expensive item. It's a make up bag from a designer brand. Her sister loves this brand so my friend has hooked on the idea that this must be good. Thing is , I do not like it at all - it's not my taste and I have something nicer. I'd love to sell it on Vinted - but is that terribly offensive?

What do you guys think?

There's alway a use for things like this surely? Medicine's, plasters, pencils, tissues, storing things. Or if you're soo particular and fussy, just give it away. It isn't a big deal.

CuriousMama · 01/12/2022 13:45

Is it a real LV as there's some good copies?

Prinnny · 01/12/2022 13:51

crochetmonkey74 · 01/12/2022 13:30

It is LV!

Haha no way! Check out my psychic powers, I’ll take it off your hands if you don’t want it 😂

OnlyFannys · 01/12/2022 13:51

Crikey I just googled LV make up bags and cant believe the price of them 😮 I dont blame you OP they are really not to my taste either

I'd rather have a luxury spa break. They're hideous.

Ireolu · 01/12/2022 13:59

Just keep it. May grow on you. I wasn't a fan of LV canvas for a long time now I happily use a wallet and key pouch because they r indestructible. I would never buy a bag though.

As it costs so much she will probably wonder where it is. I got my SIL a miu miu wallet a few years ago. Have never seen her use it. I don't buy her anything anymore. I suspect she sold it or regifted it. I am not sensitive but would rather she came and told me so we could find something she wanted.

Was it the stiff curved corners that gave it away?

For all those asking can't I use it for something else- I really can't

I have thought but the shape and stiffness of it makes it really unwieldy - it doesn't fit / suit my make up as in the zip won't do up over the shapes of my items. I have a lovely pencil pouch- and a lovely velvet pouch for my handbag stuff like medication etc which are lighter and more flexible (which I like)

It’s quite a divisive brand, not helped by the fact it’s so widely counterfeited, but I’ve a couple of theirs bags so I’m a fan.

pimlicoanna · 01/12/2022 14:03

The same happened to me. I just stuck my period supplies in it. It's a very expensive tampax holder!

crochetmonkey74 · 01/12/2022 14:04

Or if you're soo particular and fussy

This is unfair - I'm neither particular or fussy

This style and shape just does not suit me- you will have the same with items you choose

No way would I do this. Make money from a gift? I'd keep it for a while maybe wheeling it out for occasions I see my friend or else if you think this will go down ok I would phone her and explain it's gorgeous but just not my style but you really appreciate the thought and the expense and offer it to her. She can then take it and use it or sell it and maybe even give you something else with the money.

No way would I sell it. How grabby and ungrateful to make a profit on a gift. At the very very least I would gift it onto someone at a future datem

Haha bloody hell.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 01/12/2022 14:09

Whatever you do with it please don’t tell her. I bought a friend a gift I thought she would love - from Amazon as is an overseas supplier - and she’s obviously not au fait with the way returns work there as she thanked me but sent it back. I got the email notification to my account. I was / am very hurt by it tbh. I’ve not mentioned it and neither has she so clearly has no idea that I know she returned it.

gamerchick · 01/12/2022 14:09

It's a makeup bag. It holds makeup. Why on earth does it have to be to a taste? You're not wearing it. Brain boggles.

Sounds like you just want to make a bit of coin at your friends expense. Menopausal indeed.

MinnieGirl · 01/12/2022 14:09

To be honest, if she’s that nice a friend I would just use the make up bag. Not worth loosing a lovely friend over.

TokyoSushi · 01/12/2022 14:09

Wow, they are expensive! And not to my taste either... I think I'd just have to keep it and wheel it out occasionally, it's the sort of thing that might be missed if you don't have to anymore.

waddledee · 01/12/2022 14:10

I'd probably end up keeping it in a drawer for a couple of years just in case it came up in conversation. Then I'd sell it on eBay.

waddledee · 01/12/2022 14:11

Also this. I'd just use it when on trips/ staying over at hers etc even if it wasn't my favourite thing. It's only a make up bag.

TuxedoJunction · 01/12/2022 14:14

Are you 100% it’s a genuine LV bag Op, and not a very good copy? Did it come in original bag, box, carrier bag etc?

Only ask as the copies are excellent, and it would be awkward if you were to try and sell a copy(!)

Mrsphilmiller · 01/12/2022 14:14

are you sure it’s not a free item you sometimes get when you purchase make up? i got a ysl make up bag that i got for free once

unfair, uncalled for and not at all nice.
I've explained my thoughts on here and taken advice. Your snarky menopause comment - the brain boggles!

As far as I know it's real- it has all the paperwork etc
Not a free gift

I would try and use it but it doesn't fit my make up in and its too stiff

(not sure how many times I can say it)

Well if you’re sure it’s real I would sell it then.

I would probably try selling on MarketPlace, you can block friends being able to see your listings. Now would be a good time to sell, as would make a lovely Christmas gift for someone.

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/12/2022 14:40

If it’s a genuine LV item then it’s not something she’s likely to forget having given you. What do you do if she asks to see it at some point for some reason? Quite recently I had friends over and Friend A asked about a present she’d given me a couple of years ago, as Friend B had mentioned wanting a similar item - so I brought it out for Friend B to have a look at. Is it beyond the realms of possibility that sort of thing might happen and you’d have to awkwardly explain you no longer had the bag?

randomusername666 · 01/12/2022 14:41

I don't blame you for not wanting or liking it. LV is 'emperors new clothes' - ugly drab overpriced.

In any event, it's not your personal taste and you don't want to use it, so don't use it. Hang onto it for a while (in case she asks) and then either regift or sell it. If she asks why you're not using it say you have several make up bags and you rotate them .... or your other half put it in the charity bag by mistake ......

MMAMPWGHAP · 01/12/2022 14:42

With you OP. If you’re on the road to minimalism then you know when you don’t need something. Better to let someone else have use of it ASAP rather than keeping it at the back of a cupboard like many people do.
