To think Keir Starmer is bullying Rishi at PMQs?

Keirplayfair · 30/11/2022 23:37

Have been watching PMQs the past few weeks with my son because he is fascinated by the House of Commons at the moment.

Have been noticing the past three weeks that Keir's first questions to Rishi are incredibly personal, they feel more personal than usual to a PM.

Sort of examples I mean... (gist of questions not exact wording).

Last week:
Keir: well done on England and Wales in the world Cup. Rishi should we reorganise the non-dom loophole that you must know a lot about to bring in more tax?

Today:
Keir: well done England, hope we will say the same next week, commiserations to Wales. Winchester College costs £45K a year in fees. Down the road in Southampton, 4 out of 10 kids fail English and Maths at GCSEs.

Yes we know Rishi is rich, went to Winchester College, yes Keir is asking questions about the economy, wealth distribution but it just feels very... personal.

Has anyone else noticed this??

I'm not a Conservative voter by the way, sort of a floater but I feel that Keir's questions are being asked to try to throw Rishi off balance in a very personal way.

Bullying??? Or holding to account? Have you not watched PMQs before? This is what they all do...

Mrsrasputian · 01/12/2022 09:48

I remember a thread on here with certain posters being delighted that a POC was becoming Prime minister, completely ignoring his awful record and hatred of poor people.
Pretty depressing!

Keirplayfair · 01/12/2022 09:48

We all know Rishi is loaded though. Also loads of MPs are millionaires.

I feel bringing up Rishi's personal wealth all the time is getting boring and a waste of time at PMQs. I keep expecting Keir to change tack but he hasn't yet.

Politicians being bullied!! Ha Ha Ha. Thats the bearpit they are in and they love it. Afterwards in the bar it will reasonable discussion. But those that dont like it can always stand down (they don't unless forced)

Keirplayfair · 01/12/2022 09:49

This country breeds public school kids from wealthy families for these kinds of positions. And then acts surprised when they get them.

I do think PMQs needs an overhaul, and the childishness (on all sides) jibes and jokes need to go, but singling Starmer out for it, or suggesting it’s a recent thing is bizarre. Did you miss Johnson’s cake ‘jokes’ at Blackford or the Saville lies?

Agree. It also played into Truss winning. His personal wealth is irrelevant, look at policies from whoever is going for it.

in a similar vein to ‘but Corbyn…’

pointythings · 01/12/2022 09:51

And as always, the left is held to a higher standard than the right.

The number of anti KS threads on MN are heartening, though.

AutumnCrow · 01/12/2022 09:53

Interesting to see Keir Starmer is getting to the Tory spads just a bit.

twelly · 01/12/2022 09:55

I think that the Boris Johnson's behaviour in PMQs was appalling and hectoring - bring up prosecution service and making untrue accusations. The constant name calling "captain hindsight" etc etc, reference to Jeremy Corbyn etc. I don't think Keir Starmer is doing anything that is different to what Boris Johnson did and what Rishi Sunak is trying to do.
The point about changing the rules and way PMQs operate however is worth considering

MarshaBradyo · 01/12/2022 09:56

Better he’s not completely ignored if you love him that’s true.

Not listening at all to his voice is nicer though

Tanith · 01/12/2022 10:00

It's all a bit tone-deaf.

Most working class people aren't really that bothered about private schools. It tends to be the middle class Labour members and voters that get so uptight about it. It's another example of how Labour often thinks it's fighting for the working classes, but actually isn't.

Working class people want to be paid decently for their work. They want to afford to feed, clothe and house their children. They want to access good health care when necessary.
They do not, and have never had, an issue with how other people educate their children. There are working class children at these schools on bursaries. There are SEN children, paid for by the LA, at private schools. There are working class people employed by these schools.

Complaining about poorer and SEN children being subsidised at private schools while ignoring working class action for better pay isn't the way to win over working class people.

Flapjackquack · 01/12/2022 10:03

@Tanith - my working class family certainly care about tax breaks for private schools. They also care about all the other things you describe.

Simonjt · 01/12/2022 10:06

Why would mentioning the football score be bullying or overly personal?

RaRaRaspoutine · 01/12/2022 10:07

Yes poor billionaire Rishi, who is in fact LEADING THE COUNTRY and therefore probably won't be bothered by "personal" questions, is "being bullied" by the leader of the opposition. Your poor critical thinking devil's advocate nonsense is more suited to the politics threads on The Student Room.

HikingforScenery · 01/12/2022 10:09

That’s what bullying is to you?

Tanith · 01/12/2022 10:10

Flapjackquack · 01/12/2022 10:03

@Tanith - my working class family certainly care about tax breaks for private schools. They also care about all the other things you describe.

And mine don't, and neither do my neighbours on the council estates I've lived on, some of whom work for these schools.

I said "most", not every single working class family, including Flapjackquack's.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 01/12/2022 10:12

It's the kind of schoolboy shit you get when a bunch of over educated squillionaires make it to the Front Benches - which is always!

None of them have a bloody clue. And Labour didn't do much better, Gordon Brown introduced the WTC that has, as predicted, turned into yet another benefit gap trap that benefits employers more than recipients.

AngelinaFibres · 01/12/2022 10:12

JustMaggie · 30/11/2022 23:45

I think Sunak can put on his big boy pants and handle it

This. I doubt Rishi Sunak is bothered by anything Labour have to throw at him.

LadyWithLapdog · 01/12/2022 10:19

Sunak, like his predecessor, is too thick skinned to care. He’ll be smirking his usual, like his predecessor.

Keirplayfair · 01/12/2022 10:27

It's schoolboy shit, I quite agree.

Politicians - grow up and talk only about what has been happening, what is currently being done and what is going to be implemented in the future. Show us your results and use PMQs as a vehicle to explain the thinking behind the policies. We have too many people suffering in this country and too much work to do to waste time with barbed personal insults.

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 01/12/2022 10:29

I don’t think Starmer has much else.

Both parties will be squeezed into doing same - not much borrowing, a WFT, and direct payments to lower earnings. These could be either party

So all we have is this farce.

sashh · 01/12/2022 10:30

Isn't there a rule that the first question is given to the PM before PMQ's? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister%27s_Questions#:~:text=The%20first%20formal%20question%20on,with%20ministerial%20colleagues%20and%20others.
