The class system in the UK needs a revolution

So, lots of things have had me pondering this. I studied Sociology in my first degree. One thing that always caught my attention was the statistics that were stacked against anyone trying to ‘climb’ social classes. Everything is stacked against you.

I find it so hard to understand why single mothers are constantly painted as scroungers and the enemy of the state, when the majority work and just are completely failed by the misogynistic, not fit for purpose, CMS system that basically leaves them bringing up their children with all the financial, emotional and logistical responsibilities, that the fathers don’t have… and no one makes them. There’s so many other things that boil my blood, like blaming addicts and low income families, disability’s and everyone else at the ‘bottom of the pile’ to justify why resources shouldn’t go to them.

I dip in and out of this forum but I’m drawn to it because time and time again I hear the ‘middle class’ objectives and excuses.

It’s like Mancock being in the jungle. As long as I maintain my upper class charm while eating a kangaroo penis, all is good with the world, ignore everything that went on before… we don’t talk about that. Slap on the back, and on your way 🫡.

Am I unreasonable to think there needs to be a ‘levelling up’? Mancock is private educated with the world at his feet, IF we actually had a system where a ‘level up’ politician- was even possible, single mother, who was from a working class background was in the same position as him… would she have been redeemed in the same way?

I think not… time for a revolution? 🤔

Social class isn't really anything to do with how much money a person has. And the politics of envy are extremely unattractive.

Class has a lot to do with it. The middle classes are much more likely to have positive discrimination from accents, articulation, nepotism, educated parents who understand the system, confidence, high parental expectation, not needing to worry about being paying for food, clothes, warmth, live in an area where most people work, where they can see themselves reflected in "good" jobs, other people expect them to do well and work hard and achieve etc etc. I say this as someone who grew up around this then moved to a very different area. It's worlds apart.

I don't agree with any asset rich cash poor concept except as a choice people have made.
If you are asset rich you could sell some assets or leverage them for income e.g develop on land you own etc. The fact that people don't do that and can't heat or maintain their homes is a choice (a poor one imho).

Toastandavocado · 30/11/2022 22:55

The middle class mumsnetters brigade think it’s a choice to be poor, there’s no class system and those in power are not defined by class. predictable and sad.

Only on MN do I encounter posters like you that feel compelled to comment on a post with no attempt to answer it, or give a different perspective, just bash the poster. Where did I swear I was working class? Ffs 🤦‍♀️

I never said you were working class. I don't know what you are. I find it hard to believe you studied the class system, though.
It's impossible to actually discuss anything because your arguments are contradictory and incoherent. Class is not a system you can destroy because it doesn't have fixed social definitions. It exists in people's minds and is quite subjective. Hence I've read people on here state that someone is of a privileged, upper class background based on no more than an accent and being a tory politician. So there's no substantive reasoning behind a person's judgement.
Even if a country doesn't have a class system hierarchy, they still do put people into a somewhat equivalent system. They may call it different names or they may just make a judgement and "know". Same way a Tory politicians is judged upper class because he's a tory because even you don't believe everyone who feeds their kids is upper class.

You find it hard to believe I studied the class system, but you don’t believe there is a class system… Ok.

Coz it’s all going sooo well in China👍….and their class system is waaaay more in evidence than ours despite however many years of claiming to have obliterated it….

They're two different points. That's what I mean about your arguments not being coherent.
