To now think my cat has psychic abilities

So something happened this morning that I really cannot explain. My cat was walking past the bookcase, and suddenly jumped in the air and sped away, stopping about a meter away from that spot, she then stopped staring intently behind her at the book case and then 5 seconds later a book fell onto exact spot she was in when she spontaneously jumped. It was as if she knew the book was going to fall in that exact spot about 5 seconds before it even moved from the bookcase.

Really, really strange. 😱

Anyone else have any spooky stories regarding their pets?

My cat pood on the bathroom floor last night. The smell was so awful it woke me up at 3.30am!!!!

GasPanic · 30/11/2022 12:21

I'd be more worried about why a supposedly secure book suddenly fell out of a bookcase.

The cat probably heard it move slightly before it came out. Cats do have very acute hearing. Question is why did it move ?

Maybe it was the temperature. If the room was heating up/cooling down the bookcase could have expanded a little. If the book was balanced so it was held in place lightly by books either side, but its centre of gravity was over the ledge then expansion of the bookcase as the room heated up could cause it to fall out.

I think this is more unfortunate than supernatural 😁

Yes it was strange, it came flying out too, was quite eerie

Re the cats knowing something is up when you go on holiday etc, apparently it’s that your movement patterns are different to normal - you may not realise it, but they can sense when you’re not doing your usual routine so they know something is up. I heard a thing about it on the radio once from an animal expert. They might not know it’s a holiday to France, but they know something weird is happening so they hide just in case it’s bad news for them. Dogs do the same - ours can always tell when a he’s going to go in the car (she hates the car) and runs off and hides - it must be we do slightly different things before getting ready for a car trip than a ‘normal’ dog walk and she can tell the difference.

Toomanysleepycats · 30/11/2022 12:40

Imagine as human you suddenly got super strength smell and hearing abilities and at the name time no one could understand what you said or wrote.

I reckon after some time people would look at us and start saying sleepy cats has got physic abilities. But no, if I have to watch you 100% for visual clues I would get very good at it. Our power of speech ironically sometimes makes communication harder because we rely on it so much more.

Obviously I cant explain the cat/book thing. So I’ll just say magic!

My usually very loving cat started to recoil and pull a "sucking lemon" face when he came near me. I had breast cancer but didn't know at the time. He's fine now and if he did it again, I'd go and get myself checked out.

Glad to hear you're OK now, so on a lighthearted note I would like to say...

I find it difficult enough to get an appointment with a doctor and I suspect if I told them that it was necessary because 'the cat looked at me in a funny sort of way' it would be unlikely to escalate me to the top of the queue!

Bestcatmum · 30/11/2022 12:51

Your cat is definitely psychic and you have a ghost!!

TroubledRabbit · 30/11/2022 13:11

the dog has just been all cuddly and nice to me, is it because
I'm annoyed about my mum being unpleasant
I have been trying to tackle peri menopause but the dog senses something worse
or it wants some lunch?

She just wont use her words.

When I had Covid but before I actually tested, both my cats bit my head! I have one cat that jumps on the kitchen unit and we bop heads together. This particular time, he actually bit me and run off. My other cat usually joins me for a snooze on the sofa and lays annoyingly right in front of my face. He got into position then suddenly bit my head. Neither have bit me before.

Tirrrrred · 30/11/2022 13:22

@Passthecheeseboard 😂😂 The poster mentioning sick reminded me!!

Inertia · 30/11/2022 13:30

To be honest I would be more alarmed by the poltergeist-style book activity

Primroseprimula · 30/11/2022 13:40

Their is a shelf in our house that we cang put breakable items on, as they always get knocked off during the night, sometimes they are mètres away like they've flown through the air. We always joke that there's a ghost, as its a very old house.

A few weeks ago we adopted a cat, and have had a few instances of her seeming to see and react to something that we can't see. Last night she sat in the ghost corner and made yowly sounds like she was about to have a fight!

You could get your cat paid employment as a covid tester, so people can either buy a lateral flow or see if they get bitten on the head 🤣🤣🤣

😂😂

Think of all the catnip you could buy them with their earnings!

Dontaskdontget · 30/11/2022 13:58

Honestly yes I do think cats are a bit psychic eg some can see a few seconds into the future, I’ve had so many moments where they anticipate something they shouldn’t have been able to.

Cimafunky · 30/11/2022 14:07

My cat is rarely in the house. He just comes in for food, a quick stroke and is off again (what a life!) but he will stay in the house when thunderstorms are predicted (maybe he just understands English & hears me and DP discussing the weather 😃)

OneTC · 30/11/2022 14:10

Me and OH don't keep a regular routine at all, always leaving and arriving at different times. We live in a block of 60 flats and there's always activity in the stairway or the hallway yet DCat will go and sit by the front door a couple of minutes before OH comes home.

My cat bit me on the nose when he had fleas

TheSausageKingofChicago · 30/11/2022 14:17

All cats are born with ghost detectors. When their ears swivel back you know they are on high alert. Your cats are highly refined, and 100% working. Well done kitty, you passed your MOT.

Tripsabroad · 30/11/2022 14:30

I don't think my cat is psychic, but he does pick up on things. Usually he's quite stand-offish but on the day I miscarried he came and cuddled up to me on the bed, and when I found out my grandad had died he wanted to be near me all day. He knew I was sad and was trying to comfort me.

Another cat I know usually hates women and will only rub against men's legs. He's never given me any attention except when I was pregnant. Then he was all over me, even before I was showing. I'm convinced he knew!

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 30/11/2022 14:35

Many years ago MIL was dying in hospital. DH was with her but I had been sent home as I was pregnant with DS> About 3.00am I woke to the most blood curdling yowling from our cat, sitting on the bedroom window sill and staring out. Within 5 minutes I had a call from the hospital saying MIL had died a few minutes earlier - exactly at the time cat (whom MIL had adored) yowled.

wannarunfromitall · 30/11/2022 14:38

My old cat knew I was unexpectedly pregnant before I did. She curled up on my lap lots, she was resolutely not a lap cat previously.

2022again · 30/11/2022 14:59

hehe, love this thread, people's responses will depend on our own beliefs, i'm quite happy with the idea that pets are psychic!!When I was a child i used to feel my (deceased) cats sleeping on my bed. ....but with a logical, scientific hat on, equally animals are hugely sensitive to environment changes, animal behaviour seen in communities that then experience natural disasters eg tsunami or earthquake indicates this.

RaRaRaspoutine · 30/11/2022 15:01

omg I love this! Animals are incredibly sensitive. What was the book?!
