Hi I've name changed as pic of sons face

I am pretty sure son has scarlet fever waited all day in a tizz for call from doctor they agreed sounded like scarlet fever
Going in at 11 son started abx yesterday evening has had two doses
He is very tired and sore
Came into my room about twenty minutes ago and I've had to hide the actual obvious shock on my face
He's never had a cold sore and I don't know wtf this is

Is this a thing with scarlet fever
My heart is crumbling seeing him like this

I’d be concerned that this is a reaction to the antibiotics rather than the scarlet fever op. My children have had scarlet fever and it presented with a bright red face and rough rash on body (and afterwards papery peeling fingertips)
I’d call the doc ASAP and I think they take any possible allergic reaction involving the lips seriously as it could potentially also mean a similar response in the throat.

seeingdoc11 · 29/11/2022 09:39

Fuck should I ring and go sooner

Impetigo and SF are related.

Hoppinggreen · 29/11/2022 09:42

My son had Scarlet fever and was only mildly ill, he didn’t present anything like that.
Contact your GP or 111 as it could certainly be a reaction to the Antibiotics.
Dont panic though, as long as his breathing is ok it should be fine

LIZS · 29/11/2022 09:43

Does he have a sore throat? Swollen tongue, rash on body?

Novemberhater · 29/11/2022 09:43

It doesn't look like SF. It's a bright red rash, hence the name. It could be impetigo though.

Lndnmummy · 29/11/2022 09:43

Could be impetigo? My children have had scarlett feber and it doesn't present like that. Poor boy and poor mum! He will get better soon. Ice lollies are good for fluid and sore mouths

HairyKitty · 29/11/2022 09:44

You need an in person appt or an e/tele consult with photos. Doesn’t immediately look Iike scarlet fever, could be something totally different needing different treatment.
Does look like impetigo (which I don’t think gets a prescription nowadays).

seeingdoc11 · 29/11/2022 09:54

The rash is on his body the lips came secondary to that
His face was bright red yesterday
He has a dry rough tiny prick red rash to legs arms and groin and testicals

Mouth started like this before abx not after
Seeing doctor at 11

He also has sore ear and head

No swollen tongue

SF nowadays is not an illness to worry about, it's better to have antibiotics to prevent the rare risk of complication.

My daughter had it twice, which is very rare. The first time, it wasn't picked up on time, so didn't get antibiotics. She was 6. She recovered absolutely fine. No complications.

LIZS · 29/11/2022 10:00

Ds had it but was fine after a couple of days of abs. This was 20 years ago.

Unfortunately that’s no longer true as recent news events have highlight.

OP I would ring the dr and get an emergency appointment.

A 6 year old child died of Scarlet fever in Ashford, Surrey last week. This is also (I believe) still a notifiable disease.
Your advice that this is not something to worry about is dangerous rubbish. I have reported your post.

seeingdoc11 · 29/11/2022 10:06

I've deliberately not googled my poor baby I'm terrified

Leaving for doc soon
I'll post back

I feel so worried I wish my family were near by to support me

Try not too worry, it does seem like a normal childhood thing, hopefully docs can advise and reassure.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 29/11/2022 10:39

We’ve had 2 emails from school, re Scarlet fever cases.
Today’s email says they’ve been told to lower their threshold for symptoms, to include any child with a fever (over 38 degrees) or sore throat, with or without fever.

It’s not a nothing illness, so I’d definitely keep a very close eye on your DS.

justfiveminsofpeace · 29/11/2022 10:59

My DD has just got over scarlet fever but didn't have the rash around the mouth. As a PP says that looks like impetigo. My son had this before and he didn't react too badly to it, mind your poor little one having both at once.

You poor things good luck with the doctor remember to tell them which AB they've been given recently and not just this one. My DD had a chest infection prior to SF so they changed the type of AB otherwise it may not work?

Look after yourself as best you can (easier said than done I know) I caught SF from my DD and it was hell even with AB. Xx

1234IDeclareAPeanutWar · 29/11/2022 11:10

Doesn't look like the SF my kids had.

They had a rash like sand paper over their torso and a red spotty rash on the roof of their mouth.

Then 2 weeks after the rash, the skin peeled off their hands and feet which didn't even have the rash on them?!

1234IDeclareAPeanutWar · 29/11/2022 11:12

Yeah now that sounds like SF.

I managed to scroll past that.

The AB's should work, that helped my kids a lot.

He'll be fine.

1234IDeclareAPeanutWar · 29/11/2022 11:12

Sorry that was supposed to be with a quote but I deleted that part.

seeingdoc11 · 29/11/2022 11:15

Not impetigo it's SF he has the rash all over just had a review
He is doing ok just miserable
stats good etc
He is so sad the poor thing my heart is breaking for my baby

Scarlet fever and impetigo are caused by the same germ.
Antibiotics will get rid of it, might get some antibiotic ointment also for the impetigo.

Hope he feels better soon, wee cutie
