To not give my personal number to work

Crochetter · 28/11/2022 12:18

My manager has created a spreadsheet for our booked Christmas leave .
We have enough cover for the holidays.
She has now asked that we add our personal mobile numbers which will be shared with the wider team, many of whom I don't know and don't work within my area of work.
If I am on approved leave why should I be available to be contacted- I don't work in an area of emergency call outs etc.

YANBU. Just don’t give it.

HappyHamsters · 28/11/2022 12:21

Just dont share your number, HR are the only people who need it for emergency contact only.

AdoraBell · 28/11/2022 12:21

Agree, don’t give your personal number.

Gazelda · 28/11/2022 12:21

No, your personal number is confidential.

There is no valid reason for it to be shared other than with HR and (maybe) your manager.

Thelnebriati · 28/11/2022 12:21

Your manager needs their GDPR training updated. Your phone number is personal data.

RewildingAmbridge · 28/11/2022 12:23

I would give it to my line manager for emergencies on the basis it wasn't shared with the whole team. I do give my number to my peers but I'm in a senior management role and there are only two other people at my level. They wouldn't call unless it was urgent. Lots of my team share numbers with each other by choice and because of personal friendships etc, it's definitely not something I would mandate

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 28/11/2022 12:23

You work definitely needs to have your number in case of emergencies, but its not to be shared around, thats really not ok!

Ifailed · 28/11/2022 12:27

Just give them a false number, switch a couple of the digits and if anything happens claim it was a typo.

What emergencies?

What emergencies?

If the OP doesn't show up for work so they can check they are ok?

AlisonDonut · 28/11/2022 12:31

For what reason are they wanting personal numbers to be shared around?

Annual leave is annual leave and if there is an emergency surely the fire brigade, police or ambulance service would be their first port of call.

The building burns down, has a break in or there's a leak, closes for covid, serious staff sickness that could be transferred.

PuppyMonkey · 28/11/2022 12:32

I might give them my home landline (which I never answer).Grin

EmmaAgain22 · 28/11/2022 12:34

YellowTreeHouse · 28/11/2022 12:29

What emergencies?

for me it was more about HR needing your number in case there's another terror attack or something and you might be en route in.

No way would I share my number with a whole team. In a large or, your direct line manager and HR is more than enough.

Exactly that sort of thing.

This. Mention you don't believe it necessary but more than that you are concerned that it violates GDPR requirements and ask where are the policies governing how the data will be stored, shared and used.

MilkyYay · 28/11/2022 12:39

I use massive discretion with mine.

I am friendly with a couple of team mates whom i trust not to abuse it, other than that i do not share it. I 100% will not give it to my line manager as i don't want to be bothered on weekends.

Blanketpolicy · 28/11/2022 12:40

Are they asking for contact numbers in case they have problems with cover over Christmas? It is not uncommon to do this over Christmas break and unless it is written into your contract it should be on a best endeavours basis.

Speak to your manager and tell them what you are comfortable with - whether it is giving your number privately to your manager only on the understanding only they will text you if desperate and there will be no pressure to help out or have to explain if you are not available/have plans/can't be arsed that day, or just say if you would rather not share your number or be called at all during your leave as you need a proper break. If you are willing to give your number perhaps ask if there is a financial compensation if you are called in.

Goodwill is a two way street in the workplace, but only when you feel comfortable with it.

PicturesOfDogs · 28/11/2022 12:44

And here’s me on a big what’s app group with the whole department 🤣
Seriously though, if you don’t want to give it, you don’t have to.
Only HR should have it really, but possibly manager.
The whole team does not need it

Crochetter · 28/11/2022 12:49

Thanks for the replies. I don't believe its a gdpr breach as by asking me to add my own number for the purpose of sharing it I am therefore giving permission for it to be shared?
Any emergencies such as fire/ sickness / me not turning up etc would be okay as my manager can access HR records which has my contact details.
I did consider making a mistake with the numbers but that seems wrong and although I think she is doing it with the best intentions I don't think she has thought it all through. There are a couple of team members who I would not want to have my number.
My contract does not state I need to be contactable at all times and I actually work a very narrow role which means I am not able to provide cover for the wider team anyway.

Thelnebriati · 28/11/2022 12:57

Are they asking for permission? Is there a consent form and do you opt in?

DragonWasp · 28/11/2022 12:59

I'm sure others won't too. It's a badly thought out idea.

Crochetter · 28/11/2022 13:08

No permission form and the assumption is that the numbers will be added and then shared -The chaser up today says ' i notice you have not yet added your number to my spreadsheet. If possible please add these today.'
The list is 25 names long and all but 4 of us have added the numbers.
I don't know how many this will be shared with in the wider department.

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 28/11/2022 13:11

And yet you dont see this as a GDPR breach?

Roundandnour · 28/11/2022 13:12

Ask why they want your number on this shared spreadsheet.
