Delivered the wrong item - can I keep it?

I ordered some shoes and I’ve been delivered completely the wrong ones. The thing is, the ones I’ve been delivered are twice the price of what I ordered and they fit my husband perfectly!

Not really an AIBU, but does anyone know if I can just keep them? Would the company contact me?
The address on the parcel is correct but inside the package was a packing slip with a different name on it. So I think it could be traced if they return their shoes, which they would surely.

Thanks!

Of course you can, as long as stealing isn’t a problem for you

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 28/11/2022 09:30

Nah, send it back

shiningstar2 · 28/11/2022 09:33

Sometimes if you contact the company they tell you just to keep the goods because it is more bother to them to collect. I think the only way you can legitimately keep the goods is to contact them and see if this is what they say. You may be lucky. 🤔

Ihatethenewlook · 28/11/2022 09:33

Oh just keep them. I don’t believe half the people on here who will tell you that they’d send them back. And the people who tell you this is classed as ‘stealing’ are complete idiots.

BamBamBilla · 28/11/2022 09:34

Amazon - sure keep it.
Independent small business owner - contact them and send it back.

Maybe but I’m not a thief

theswoot · 28/11/2022 09:43

This has happened to me with items before and when I have contacted the retailer to point out the error they have told me to keep the item. But even if they told me to send it back I probably would as long as they sorted it. Personally I couldn’t just keep it.

Have received a king size duvet, one of those Tile trackers (both duplicate deliveries) and a bunch of beauty products (someone else’s order) in recent memory! I did once receive a single nail polish instead of a set of them from a company and they handled it so badly (refused to send the correct item until they had received the single nail polish back) that I haven’t used them since as it was such a pain in the arse.

HootyMcboob76 · 28/11/2022 09:45

If the packing slip is obviously meant for someone else that probably means they have got your less expensive shoes. How would you feel if this was reversed and you had received the incorrect product and a worse one than you ordered and then had to go to the hassle of arranging a return?
The other customer is obviously going to contact the company and they will probably realise what they've done if it is a small company that doesn't process many orders in a day. I wouldn't be surprised if they did contact you in that case. You would look pretty daft if you had kept the shoes without telling them.

Anyway I guess it's up to your conscience.
You've got something that you didn't pay for at the expense of someone else (even if that "someone" is not an individual but a company).

You wouldn't be asking for advice if you thought this was okay OP, would you?

No, they are people who know the law.

Sure, the chances are that no-one will do anything about it, but it doesn't change the fact that it is stealing.

Onnabugeisha · 28/11/2022 09:49

I’d contact the business and arrange to pay the difference in price as you’re happy with the shoes and they fit your DH perfectly. Many small businesses sell through Amazon.

Vallmo47 · 28/11/2022 09:54

I don’t think you noticed their error did you OP? You bought your husband a pair of shoes in good faith, wrapped it, he loves them & has worn them, you honestly didn’t realise the mistake?
Like someone else said, it depends a bit on the circumstances… if you think it’s possible another innocent customer now gets a world of trouble, I couldn’t do that. Or if it’s a small local business, I’d tell them as well. It’s clearly NOT stealing, you made a purchase and they made an error.

Sixofseven · 28/11/2022 10:02

Not Amazon, and not a small business. High street retailer size.
Thinking about it, I’m sure I ordered some shoes for my husband and they were due to arrive around the same time 🤔
If I had received less expensive shoes then I would’ve contacted them for a return. So it’s not at the other customers expense, it’s the companies mistake. it’s not like I stuff them in my bag and walked out of the shop with them!

I'd call them and explain. Most big companies will tell you to keep them.

Glitteratitar · 28/11/2022 10:05

Return it. It’s the right thing to do.

And before posters respond with the “yeah right” and their own questionable moral compass, I have been in that situation and returned it. I once ordered a bracelet for £400, and received one which they sell for £1900. I returned it.

Lots of small retailers on amazon...

Of course you contact them🙄 everyone happy with stealing would totally flip if this was their order lost or (as op even says) they would get cheaper thing.

If you quietly keep them it is very much like you stiffed them in a bag and walked out of shop with them.

How can you not know if you ordered those shoes for your husband yourself…? 🙄

Thatiswild · 28/11/2022 10:40

So you’re going to justify doing nothing about it anyway…why ask then?

Sixofseven · 28/11/2022 10:45

@NamechBge I was joking. Missed the mark obviously! I’ll try harder next time.

You contact the retailer and they arrange to pay for their return.

And it doesn't make a blind bit of difference if it's amazon or ma and pa's shoeshop round the corner, people need to stop coming out with that nonsense.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/11/2022 10:47

I think if the ones delivered are twice the price you should return one shoe and could keep the other. Then everything balances out - sort of.

EndlessRain · 28/11/2022 10:49

YABU.

Someone else is probably being told their shoes were delivered and having issue trying to get their money back/ correct shoes sent.

It's just dishonest, contact the company and they might let you keep them. Anyway, don't you want your actual shoes?

What a world we live in with people like you @Ihatethenewlook

Beautiful3 · 28/11/2022 11:09

Honestly, I'd keep them.

ElephantInTheKitchen · 28/11/2022 11:13

In a lot of cases customer returns don't end up back on the shelf, they're sold off cheap in job lots via auction houses and so on (and from there, they often make their way to eBay and market stalls etc)

Obki · 28/11/2022 11:16

Why do people feel the need to brag about their ill gotten gains on MN...

Contact them, they will let you keep them.
