Mince pies. Could not see the point when I was younger, eeurrggh, etc, but now I'm older I love them. Unfortunately I now know they're tiny calorie bombs, so only get one or two packet over Christmas.

Ditto Christmas pudding.

Dotingmumandgranny · 28/11/2022 11:41

Gherkins, chicken liver paté, sushi.

I like nearly all these, what I really dislike is peas and raw tomatoes.

Heaven is definitely blue cheese, olives, avocado, smoked salmon and capers

I hate cooked tomatoes. Love them raw but cooking them kills any appeal for me.

RoomOfRequirement · 28/11/2022 11:42

This is so interesting to me! Can I ask why you keep eating something you don't like until you eventually 'acquire' it? I love food but I'd be miserable doing that!

DogInATent · 28/11/2022 11:47

Andouillette. The faint smell is a little off and the flavour is distinctive (but not unpleasant), but the texture is quite off-putting.

Konfetka · 28/11/2022 11:47

It's not that uncommon with cucumber. Apparently there is a gene which makes it taste revolting to a % of the population. Not sure if it's something you can become acquired to though. And it can't be picked out Apparently, as the taste contaminates almost all of the food.

I'm afflicted with the revolted-by-coriander-and-anything-it's-touched gene.

Flooper · 28/11/2022 11:49

I check in every so often to see if I still hate marmalade, baked beans and cauliflower cheese. Still do.

Oh I thought that genetic thing was coriander - apparently it tastes like soap to some people (not me, I think go as far as to say it's my favourite herb).
@RoomOfRequirement for me it's just because it would be convenient to enjoy these foods, I want to like them! DP & DC like salmon but I don't so have something different. Same with melon- DC love it but it ends up spoiling before they can eat it all, if I liked it too we could get through it without it going bad.

PearlclutchersInc · 28/11/2022 12:21

Fennel, love it

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/11/2022 12:23

Durian fruit 🤢

unchienandalucia · 28/11/2022 12:27

Not a good, but lager. Had to teach myself to like it at uni as it was all I could afford.

Olives and mushrooms took years. I still only occasionally make an active choice to add mushrooms to something.

Avocado is still being acquired. I should try harder with that one really, given it's ubiquity when out but I live alone so there's no incentive to buy stuff I don't much like.

I still don't much like seafood (love fish, prawns are okay). I think it's the texture TBH and also my first experience of it being limpet which I think is probably bring thrown in at the deep end...

@Augend23 I don't think Avocados are an acquired taste, but getting the one at the right stage is an acquired skill.

Too hard and they have an unpleasant texture & soapy taste.

too soft and they're vile.

They need to 'give' but not squish when you press your thumb lightly on them.

they're bloody difficult to buy well in the U.K. I've had most luck with the waitrose ones, but even then can get 2/4 packs that are already 'over' or just go from 'not ready' to 'over' in the blink of an eye.

A perfect one will be lighter around the stone getting darker towards the outside and a beautiful clear colour without black specks.

it can be an expensive process, but good ones are worth it!!

ButteryNuts · 28/11/2022 13:03

Cheese for me. Used to make me literally vomit, even just the smell. Took me to 25 years old to begin enjoying mozerella and parmesan (which I now love), cheddar is manageable in small doses and haven't dared to try anything else.

Scarfymcscarface · 28/11/2022 13:15

Asparagus

and mince pies is a good shout! Agree with most others on the thread.

Love avocados but they're as bad as pears for getting the ripeness just so. Mine invariably go unripe, unripe, unripe, uneatable.

LuciferRising · 28/11/2022 13:32

vegetarian now, but not because I don't like meat. The only thing I won't eat because I dislike it is okra. No idea whether I have been served it wrong / cooked it wrong, but has been slimy.

OneTC · 28/11/2022 13:46

Pretty much everything is an acquired taste to an extent. Most things our brains have to learn the reward before we want something.

A sibling had some kind of brain event that reset all her acquired tastes and now she can't stand, having previously adored, coffee, wine, beer, eggs, blue cheese and had found her taste buds have basically reverted to being a kid

Yeah it doesn't have to be like this

Dreikanter · 28/11/2022 13:57

I didn't try things like olives, avocados, capers, oysters, coriander until I was in my 20s, and did have to try them all several times before I got to really like them.

Can't bear the taste of beetroot and brussels sprouts, I don't like dill, or cauliflower cheese / macaroni cheese,

tiddlywinks2 · 28/11/2022 14:08

Mince pies.
Trifle
Parsnips
Peppers
Swede
Egg plant
Jackfruit
Christmas pudding
Aniseed
Blue cheese

I love avocado! I could eat it every day, same with prawns and goats cheese 😋

tiddlywinks2 · 28/11/2022 14:10

@SkylightSkylight I had the same problem with avocados, do you have a Morrisons near you? I never have a problem there. I never buy the packs, just individual ones.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/11/2022 14:50

@tiddlywinks2 Yep- I've never actually acquired a taste for Xmas pudding!!
