DH and I were on holiday last week in a hotel of the floating variety owned by a large and well known company. On our last night we went to one of the restaurants onboard and DH ordered what he wanted and I ordered Spaghetti Carbonara tossed in a Parmesan Wheel. The dish came had a £3 supplement payment. They asked my DH if it was alright that my dish had a £3 supplement and then told him how my food would come. Both times with their back to me. Am I right to be annoyed as I ordered the food not DH.

I'd certainly be cheesed of with three quid extra for a parmesan wheel.
The Captain's a right Leedammer.
I'd make him sit at another table. What a Comte.

Bpdqueen · 27/11/2022 18:35

Where was this cruise was it a cultural thing

Amazing 😂

burnoutbabe · 27/11/2022 18:39

I'd assume it's standard when it's the other persons cruise card it's being charged to.

Years ago, DH and I drove to a local coffee shop en route to somewhere else, got back in the car and click click, car wouldn't start.

AA duly summoned, guy turns up and I said, sounds like the alternator, he replied I will be the judge of that.

Ten minutes later he comes into the coffee shop and says to DH it is the alternator, 😡give him his due, Dh replied I didn't diagnose it, my wife did perhaps you would like to speak to her.

So he mumbled to me, it is the alternator. 😂

Do you eat all the cheese?
Or is taken away & re-used?

Much as I love parmesan, I think it sounds rather nasty - whichever option.

It sounds wasteful or unhygienic. I would have to see it before I decide which.

knittingaddict · 27/11/2022 18:51

So you don't eat it out of the parmesan wheel? They put hot pasta in the scooped out parmesan, this melts some of the parmesan and then they serve the pasta?

Wakk · 27/11/2022 19:02

The wheel is at the counter, it's used over and over again but only touched by the chef.

OhWilding · 27/11/2022 19:03

@knittingaddict Yes.

It's a bit grim in my opinion as the parmesan wheel has hot pasta stirred around it, then again, and again, and again over several days. Thus, you end up eating several days old warmed up cheese crud amongst the new cheese.

Each to their own.

We went out Friday night with dc. I had to ask for the bill after waiting ages. When it came they had added £20 tip. Usually I happily pay a tip but the service had been awful. We had to ask for dessert menus, ask to order dessert and ask to get the bill. So I said this and that I wasn’t happy on this occasion with the service charge (it was a nice restaurant which dh and I have enjoyed previously so wanted to treat ourselves and dc too).

She was apologetic and all was fine, I handed my card over and she went to get the machine and brought it to our table, handing it to dh. Dh said, that’s my wife’s card and she looked confused and handed it to me. I had discussed the bill and handed her the card so I was rather baffled by her determination to make dh pay. It’s just weird.

Georgyporky · 27/11/2022 19:22

I missed the post that it was Marella.

It does explain their dreadful hygiene.
We had a cruise with them - didn't realise it was Tui in disguise until it was too late to cancel.
Very bad D&V on the 'plane coming back - a Tui flight. They refused to take any responsibility despite the fact that I had only eaten their food & drink on their boat & their plane.

Wallstick · 27/11/2022 19:29

What do they do with the wheel innards?

Jones9876 · 27/11/2022 20:44

Pic of said wheel. It seemed a tasty and interesting concept but my stomach later that evening said otherwise 🤢😂😂

No, you should be ashamed of yourself, clicking on a thread which is clearly about something you have no interest in and berating the OP.

She never said this was all she had to worry about. Perhaps you should count yourself lucky for all the fortune you have compared to the very poor people who live in the world and stop whining yourself.

Quite right, let’s shut down the entire internet and not talk about anything fun or interesting, ever.

If it was being charged to a room/card in your husband's name then that makes it slightly more understandable but would the waitress know those details? Seems more likely just a bit of old fashioned sexism.

MammaWeasel · 27/11/2022 22:29

Had you ordered anything previously ........eg wine perhaps......and used dh's cruise card? They might have thought he was using his card for the meal, and therefore checked with him before charging it.

Yes every person has own cruise card even if it's one credit card paying off both cards.

So depends whose card was being used to pay for the meal's extras.

Yes the waitress would know those details if the reservation was made using DHs cruise card.

A friend of mine works on a cruise ship and their dining options outside of the general buffet all require a reservation and when the reservation is made then they take the lead bookers cruise details - cruise card/cabin number etc. When you go into the restaurant the waiting staff use an ordering system on a tablet and it shows who the table was reserved for so they can add any extra charges to the account throughout the meal service.

If it's a man and a woman at the table and it was booked under Mr Jones' cruise card details then it is Mr Jones who will be charged for any extras and therefore they will confirm any surcharges are fine with him, regardless of who ordered them. If the OP had been with another woman and it was her cruise card used for the reservation then they would still have checked the surcharge with the OPs companion as they are the one paying.

I complained about similar in a Michelin star restaurant and got a bottle of champagne with the apology so worth doing!

I've been on Tui cruises and loved them (also been on other companies but Tui was much better).
