Quite a few threads recently and I am wondering how cold peoples houses get without heating
Im in the damp north west and quite near the coast so can be windy
3 bed semi built in the 60s
deep loft insulation plus boarded out, cavity wall insulation and double glazed windows and doors
We use draft excluders and thick curtains including door curtain
Without any heating on at all it rarely gets below 12, my old boiler had no thermostat and could only set by timer so we used to leave switched off between bonfire night and Easter or 1st April if a late Easter and although I have a newer boiler now still do same
DP lives in a terrace house further inland and has no heating at all - he benefits from either side and it rarely drops below 9-10

Our heating goes off at 8pm normally at 19 c and it's not been lower than 16c just before it comes back on at 645am. Coldest during the day has been 17.3c

fourplusfour · 26/11/2022 22:57

I'm in the SW. 1930s semi. Most days it's around 14/15 without heating.

Paddybare · 26/11/2022 22:58

No heating in our 4 bed semi means about 13 degrees, maybe a little colder on very cold and damp days. I know because this is what it’s like if we get back from a few days away in winter.

TheChosenTwo · 26/11/2022 22:59

SE, very well insulated house, no room really ever gets below 17, my bedroom is currently saying 19, no heating on in this room and window open.
I like my bedroom cool with a window open but downstairs rooms are around 20/21 without heating.

VenusInfers · 26/11/2022 23:04

South coast, not had the heating on yet, fairly well insulated house for age (1860’s) currently 14.5 degrees in the kitchen, which is an extension and usually the coolest room in the house.
Was going to whack the CH on for an hour tonight, but the batteries on the control for it have run down from lack of use and the whole thing needs resetting; which takes AGES 😭

Bristoluser · 26/11/2022 23:07

12/14 in mid winter, around 16 at the moment

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble · 26/11/2022 23:09

I’m in the south east with no central heating. It’s been 12 or 13 degrees inside recently. The coldest it has ever been was a couple of years ago when I came home to 6 degrees in my lounge! I just went straight up to bed and got under the duvet, still wearing my coat, hat, scarf and boots!

BloodyShoes · 26/11/2022 23:10

I do put a little bit of heating on for 30 mins in the morning then it gets to 17 by the time the kids get home from school.

Same.

South East, inland by 20 miles ish. 3 bed townhouse style semi. Our biggest problem is mould as it is reasonably well insulated but the house wasn't built with it (cavity wall insulation, loft insulation) and has no extractor fans so it's hard to remove humidity without opening windows and making it cold. So we need heating more for the house than for comfort.

Takingabreakagain · 26/11/2022 23:17

Victorian semi detached, I've never seen the thermostat lower than 16. We have it set to heat to 19 at certain times of the day and to come on automatically if it gets lower than 12 overnight - it never does

Linnet · 26/11/2022 23:17

I’m in Scotland. I haven’t put the heating on properly yet, it’s been on for the odd hour here and there to dry clothes but it’s not set to come on morning and night yet.

I bought a little room thermometer, as we don’t have one linked to our boiler, and the living room in the evening usually sits at around 17/18 degrees I think this is helped by the heat coming from the cooker as the kitchen is just off the living room. During the day it usually sits around 16 degrees although has been as low as 15.

dd2’s bedroom, which is always the coldest room in our house as it has 2 outside walls, was sitting at 12 degrees last night. She’s not here at the moment though so she’s not freezing in her room, don’t worry.

RobertaFirmino · 26/11/2022 23:18

Victorian mid-terrace on the NE coast - drops to around 14 degrees with no heating but the house is very well insulated with a new roof.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 26/11/2022 23:18

I’m NW, Victorian terrace. About 14° here if I do t turn it in. We get by at 16° but when it drops to 14° I usually put it on for an hour or so. I think we’ve acclimatised. My friend keeps hers at 20° and it’s boiling.

HotChicolate · 26/11/2022 23:20

South East/ upstairs about 17 and downstairs 14.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 26/11/2022 23:20

NE Scotland here. No power over storm Arwen last year for over a week. My house fell to 4/5 degrees and my make up/lotions etc solidified. I think people forget that even in a new build house, outside temps in Scotland can be very low indeed and then add in the wind........

RobertaFirmino · 26/11/2022 23:21

Flamin' hell @EddieVeddersfoxymop will you be able to manage this winter?

JackTorrance · 26/11/2022 23:22

I can answer this conclusively. I've got a well-insulated newbuild and we were away for a few months over last winter, so I left it on a frost setting, was either four or six degrees, can't remember now. It eventually dropped down to that. I suppose without it, it would have kept dropping as the outside temperature got colder in late winter.
It would categorically have not been liveable.

JackTorrance · 26/11/2022 23:23

I should add, it's detached so we weren't getting any residual heat from other properties.

Yeah......we are oil heating which has tripled in price. Resigned to large bills as we have to run the heating. No choice in the far north of Scotland!

Ireolu · 26/11/2022 23:23

North London 30s semi. 17 degrees.

Primroseprimula · 26/11/2022 23:25

South West, early 1800s stone cottage, 2 foot thick walls, listed building so no double glazing. I've never seen it drop below 14. At the moment it's usually 16/17 in the day without heating. Weve just been putting it in in the evening.

rickandmorts · 26/11/2022 23:26

Yorkshire and our house was 12 degrees when I got home today at about 5pm. The windows had been open though as I like it to air in the day, it's old and gets a bit fusty! Warms up quickly with the heating on though, I tend to put it on for around 2-3 hours a night. We have a baby due next week and really not sure what I'll do as I do find it cold if I'm in the house during the day. Might put the heating on for an hour in the morning and afternoon and not open the windows but a bit concerned about damp/ stale air!

CandyFloss35 · 26/11/2022 23:29

New build and it stays around 18.5 with no heating, heated to 20.5 when heating is on and retains 19.8 over night.

MissisBoote · 26/11/2022 23:32

South East. Victorian semi.
It's been 13° in the daytime here this week.
We don't have a thermostat so the heating just comes on for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. I've noticed mould in the colder spots of the house so I think I'll need to put it on for half an hour a couple of times a day. Have the woodburner on from mid afternoon so that helps take the chill off till the heating comes on.
Really can't afford to have the heating on much more but can't live with the mould either.

Merryoldgoat · 26/11/2022 23:34

I have no idea as I’ve never left it off to allow that to happen.

Its never below 19.
