AIBU To Think That The Chalet School Matron Would Be In Prison Nowadays

..........................for giving unprescribed sedatives to the girls so frequently.

(lighthearted) (in case a million people tell me that IABU)

The Chalet School Matron was forever doling out sedatives to the girls, without even asking Jack Maynard to prescribe them first.
Shocking stuff. Nowadays, she would be jailed and struck off the NMC Register.

Noooooooo I've only just convinced myself to go through the chanel tunnel this year and I'm nearly 40. (although it's by train so in fairness it's like two of my fears mashed together)

No chance! I have no intention ever of going through the Channel Tunnel.

I know quite well that the very time I decide to go through it will be the time everything goes tits-up and there's a horrific tragedy and no Dr. Jem to save me, either.

....I have absolutely no idea what's going on here.

I'm not complaining. I'm intrigued.

But I think I'd rather remain intrigued than be told the answer.

There are STACKS of girls with boys' names. It does my head in.

Tom Gay. Jack Lambert. Len Maynard. Cecil Maynard. Ted Grantley. Robin Humphries. Dicky Christy. Terry Something-or-other.

There were loads of others, but I can't remember them all at the moment.

What annoys me is the inconsistency of nicknames aren’t allowed but shortenings of names are and then we have Tom

We're just mocking the Chalet School series of books, by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer.

There are 63 of them and they're all.......................odd.

Yeah but I can't have kids (obviously didn't love Joey enough as a character) so I figure by the time I make it out the other end of rhe tunnel I will have adopted at least two and the authorities will just let me take them with me

Yes! Nobody is allowed to change Flavia's name to Copper (because it is a nickname) BUT - nobody is allowed to call Tom "Muriel Lucinda" because..........well, she doesn't like it.
Bonkers.

I do wonder why the triplets are named Mary Helena, Mary Constance and Mary Margaret, when nobody calls them any of those names.

😁

An alarming thought. I wonder whether some sort of No Orphan upgrade is available?

I think you have to be married to a doctor to get the orphan option so I failed there too. If my mum had sent me to boarding school in Switzerland I would clearly have married a doctor and been popping out babies every year. I blame her. She wouldn't buy us a horse either. So mean (also neither of these options were affordable as she stupidly didn't marry a doctor)

She was brilliant at writing girls though.

The three main protagonists were various degrees of fuck annoy, but the B list were super.

People like Margia Stevens, Cornelia Flower, Biddy, Gay Lambert, Daisy Venebles, Julie Lucy (all the Lucy's really). And plenty more.

oh hang on, that must have been somebody else - the Saints was pre-war Blush

Forever Amber was Annis in one of the island books, although originally it was Gone with the Wind. I read Forever Amber as a child hoping to find the dirty bits! I was very disappointed 😂😂

Catinabeanbag · 27/11/2022 17:32

The 'Joey getting pneumonia after standing at the door for about a minute to see the snow' plot was ridiculous. If it was the cold which did it, why did she (and the others) have to shiver in a cold bath every morning? Would that not just have led to permanent pneumonia?

And, re the bookend incident, there is indeed a current fan fiction in process all about Margot getting....justice....over that, and not being let off (again) by Miss Annersley. (Can be found on Lime Green Musings, though you do have to join to read)...

....not that I know about these things, of course cough

I think I'm not unreasonable at all. If Chalet school has taught me anything it's that these children will be grateful, well adjusted with so signs of trauma whatsoever

TheKeatingFive · 27/11/2022 17:34

Has anyone ever seen Daisy Pulls It off? Absolutely brilliant riffing off the 'brain fever' nonsense that EBD delighted in.

In my grandparents’ generation (at school in the 20s and 30s), absolutely everyone seemed to be called by something other than their actual name, and that’s true both for the British and French side of the family. It’s weird.

My English grandpa’s best friend’s surname was Bailey and the entire family, male and female, seemed to be nicknamed Bill. I get why now (confused the hell out of me as a child), but still seems a little excessive. Phone calls to the landline, asking for Bill, must have caused mayhem.

I left my heated aider on when I went to work yesterday. Convinced the house was going to be burnt down when I got home

What is a heated aider please?

The ever increasing number of wards that the Maynard’s acquire is weird.

I know things were more lax at that time period, but even so. You’d think that at some point someone would have said hang on, you’ve already got parental responsibility for loads of kids, can you really manage yet another one?

they sounded like some sort of weird cult.

this thread is making me think I missed a lot of hidden political messages...

And some of them seem to disappear and never get mentioned again! Marie Claire for instance.

It's really odd the way Erica Standish attaches herself to Joey.
If a strange girl ran up to me and announced that my mother had made me their ward I would tell them to fuck off, not immediately take them for tea, then drag them all the way to the Bernese Oberland and assume responsibility for them forevermore.

Was Erika Standish the one whose mother knew Joey from school in the Tirol, wasn't particularly close to her, hadn't seen her for 20 years and yet appointed her guardian to her daughter? Now that was weird
