AIBU To Think That The Chalet School Matron Would Be In Prison Nowadays

..........................for giving unprescribed sedatives to the girls so frequently.

(lighthearted) (in case a million people tell me that IABU)

The Chalet School Matron was forever doling out sedatives to the girls, without even asking Jack Maynard to prescribe them first.
Shocking stuff. Nowadays, she would be jailed and struck off the NMC Register.

The really mad thing about the books is that despite the turgidly boring and often pious bits about Christmas plays/pantomimes and the presence of Len Maynard, the most boring person in the world, they are still brilliant. Extra points for completely bonkers medical problems (someone has a growth on their neck that makes them fat, and everyone comments on how great it is that they’ll lose weight when they need surgery to remove it), daring rescues and collapsing into the arms of nearby doctors.

I assume the neck lump was a goitre, so the medical bit is right (they can make you hypothyroid and gain weight or hyperthyroid and lose weight), though obviously not the fat-shaming.

I'd like a series about the life of the Drs in The San where the Drs' slot machine exists. Take a job, push in your 'I've now saved someone' token, and you get allocated a member of the CS 6th form.

Well on those grounds, Gaudenz ought to be married to be whole school.

He's rescued countless girls, including Len Maynard. Why does she end up with Reg Entwhistle, when Gaudenz rescued her several books previously?

I went to the Passion Play this year at Oberammagau purely on the basis of the Chalet books. I was very disappointed not to have been so overwhelmed with emotion that I quietly went into a dead faint at the end like Joey.

There was a big thread about the Chalet School a few years ago which ended up in everyone sharing copies of the e-books on Dropbox.

Yes. I read them all from there last Christmas after discovering my mother had charity shopped my collection.

EBD's version of fat-shaming was odd. She mentions Nancy Wilmot being fat (and says something about Nancy liking being fat) but also talks about Miss Maynard's goitre and fatness (after she's married - she was Mrs. Someone by then) and her amazing weight loss after the surgery.

I expect if Miss Maynard had married a doctor at the San, and not a farmer who went "out" to Australis, she would not have become fat.

And poor Grizel too. (AIBU my dad says I can't be a pe teacher; AIBU my stepmother hates me; AIBU my best mate has run off with my boyfriend and now she says we have to sell our shared business )

Grizel is considered contemptible for loving Joey too much. As noted up thread, others Came To A Bad End for not loving her enough. It was a perilously thin line.

CatLoaf · 27/11/2022 12:44

I think Margot is my least fave Maynard - when she bloody nearly kills someone by chucking a book end at their head, it's quickly excused away by 'poor Margot's devil' or whatever 🙄.
I like Steven! 😌

HAHA! So true! Simone gets cursed with only having 2 kids because she just liked Joey too much when they were young teenagers.

ToWhitToWhoo · 27/11/2022 12:46

Yes, her and most of the doctors!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 27/11/2022 12:47

I have a lot of sympathy for Margot - growing up in that household would turn anyone into a psychopath.

nonevernotever · 27/11/2022 12:49

Ooh gaudenz and Len would be great! AIBU to go no contact with my mother because she always wanted me to marry her Dr friend? My DH is quite a bit older than me, but he's lovely - the strong silent type, and great with his hands IYKWIM 😉 whereas the doctor is angry jealous and controlling...

Oh boy!

Yes, that link works.

I shall excuse myself from the thread now, while I read Joey & Co In Tirol.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Betty is well and truly redeemed in the marmite of the girls own world - the chalet girls grow up.

Which is banned from mention on certain Facebook groups as it causes so much distress.

That was a horrible book-I read a review that said "the author must really hate the Chalet School".

I agree that Chalet Girls Grow Up is a horrible book. It's very badly written. The syntax is appalling.

I do think that the portrayal of Joey Maynard as a self-centred, elderly weirdo, still obsessed with her awful school stories, is very funny, though.

I also like the idea of Mary-Lou turning up and nicking Reg Entwhistle from Len.

However, the book is generally odd and I ended up throwing it away. I don't think that's a good reason for FB pages to object to its being discussed.

My mum had one hypo/gain in the late 50s...if you look at the wedding photos you can kind of make it out...she went into hosp 6 months later and the vicar who married her and my dad asked my dad if they'd had a baby boy or girl.😮
I didn't turn up for another 14yrs.

TheShellBeach · 27/11/2022 14:11

I take it that everyone has abandoned the thread to read everything in the Dropbox?

It's weird that Margot isn't done for attempted murder after throwing a bookcase at Betty Landon and knocking her out.

All that happens is a gentle tut-tut. No punishment, no consequences. (AIBU to think school should have punished the girl who nearly killed my DD)

Anna (Joey's servant/nanny/housekeeper/slave) declines an offer of marriage because she doesn't think Joey can cope without her (true) and because she Loves Joey So Much.
(AIBU not to get married because I am indispensable - fiance very controlling, employer even more so)

Dotingmumandgranny · 27/11/2022 14:21

Matron was so patronizing. I remember when she lined up all the staff and took their temperatures. I'd have told her where to go.

StitchesInTime · 27/11/2022 14:21

Margot gets off ridiculously lightly with throwing that bookend. She could have easily killed Betty.

It’s blatant favouritism because she’s Joey’s daughter. It’s the only explanation that makes sense. Either because they all think Joey’s the best thing ever, or Joey’s got some deep dark secrets about the staff stashed away and they’re terrified of angering her.

StitchesInTime · 27/11/2022 14:27

Anna (Joey's servant/nanny/housekeeper/slave) declines an offer of marriage because she doesn't think Joey can cope without her (true) and because she Loves Joey So Much.

Well, that’s what Joey says 🙄
More likely Anna decided it wouldn’t work out for reasons completely unconnected with the Maynard’s, and Joey’s leapt to the wrong conclusion.

The potential fiancée must have been terrible for Anna to think him worse than staying at the Maynard’s.
Having my own home to look after and having my own DC has really put into perspective just how overworked poor Anna must have been.

😆

and then the drip feed that said employer has 11 children (or however many it was at that point) and spends all day hanging around her old school..
