..........................for giving unprescribed sedatives to the girls so frequently.

(lighthearted) (in case a million people tell me that IABU)

The Chalet School Matron was forever doling out sedatives to the girls, without even asking Jack Maynard to prescribe them first.
Shocking stuff. Nowadays, she would be jailed and struck off the NMC Register.

"Of course, she gets away with it because her mum is St Joey. It’s difficult to imagine such an outcome if it had been Betty throwing the bookend at Margot’s head"

(AIBU to complain to school - DD nearly killed by aggressive 16 yo)

The following is taken from a CS thread from years ago. It made me laugh at the time and it still makes me laugh.

Damn right.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/11/2022 19:52

I'm pretty sure it was WW2 that slowed down Joeys reproductive powers, with Jack being away for a bit.

The one where they escape the Nazis was my favourite in childhood.

I mean that must come as a shock when you remember these are the same girls who thought some jam needed three cheers.

Too too true. The only possible redeeming aspect is that it must still have been rationing at that point. Maybe contemporary readers went weak at the thought of jam?

Still piss poor though.

Yes - and Emerence swears at someone Shock

I’m wondering if the ditch happens in the equally poorly-named Excitements. Although I have a feeling that one is The One With The New Chapels.

RafaistheKingofClay · 28/11/2022 19:58

Swearing at someone is probably one of the least shocking of Emerence’s crimes given she nearly burnt her parents house down.

There is definitely a ditch in Shocks. The place is flooding left, right and centre due to dodgy drains, and Emerence blocks one of them up with an old scarecrow (as you do). One of the staff falls into some kind of sink hole. I think it presages yet another shift of premises.

CorporateBull · 28/11/2022 20:02

Is it the same one where a Dawbarn twin trips over a pig? Or is that just the random Armada cover showing one of them en route to the ditch with superfluous pig?

RafaistheKingofClay · 28/11/2022 20:03

We’re those the drains that gave everyone sore throats so they had to move to the island.

I'm not sure the books can live up to all this hype 😂

I think those were different drains 😂

Where Bill’s chestnut locks turn white overnight after Robin embroils them in resisting an anti-Semitic riot and they have to escape up a tunnel, and then go on the run dressed as the least likely set of peasants ever. And some Nazi pursuers are fooled by Joey speaking Romany, and then Jack bangs two of their heads together?

I think those drains happened off-stage didn’t they? Merely mentioned in passing to excuse a more exciting location.

MrsHamlet · 28/11/2022 20:54

Why don't I remember drains? I remember hedges with improbable hiding places.

No those drains were in the Armishire books, that’s why they had to leave. They seem to have a lot of bad luck with drains!

Awesome summary, @CowPie 😀

PuttingDownRoots · 28/11/2022 21:08

@cowpie and they thought trousers would be far too difficult for girls to wear...

Plus the Peace pledge espionage

CorporateBull · 28/11/2022 21:10

Very complex, trousers.

Bloatstoat · 28/11/2022 21:45

I love this thread.
One of the most crazy things that even as a child I questioned was Biddy O'Ryan being found by some of the pupils as if she was a stray puppy and then being adopted not by a family or even an individual character, but by the guides. Surely even then there must have been some sort of system that would have stopped this?
The Chalet School and the Lintons is my favourite, Joyce Linton was fab until she gave in and decided to adore Joey like the rest of them.

TheKeatingFive · 28/11/2022 21:48

Love Joyce. 😍

I think I read that book very quickly and for years thought that Thekla was expelled for eating raw bacon. Anyone else?

MissyB1 · 28/11/2022 21:53

What was so wrong about a midnight feast anyway? They acted like it was the crime of the century! In Enid Blyton midnight feasts were held about once a week!
