They can't.

I read such horrors on food threads.

Either courgettes and mushrooms mixed in a worthy mushy horror.

OR jars, and packets.

Horrible. So. Much. Horrible. Foood.

I love classic French cookery and their food culture, but it's not the be all and end all, and I still find it hilarious how many in France tolerate spice heat so badly, or rate French produce so highly that they will not try anything else. And I've never seen so many aisles of ready meals as I regularly saw in French supermarkets.

The UK has one of the most open minded and diverse food cultures in the world, and our own traditional dishes are delicious when made well. A lot of people can't cook, that's true, but there are lots of decent home cooks too.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 26/11/2022 09:16

One assumes that you made it yourself?

😂

LillyCandC · 26/11/2022 09:16

um- it’s really difficult to cook tasty food when you live in Britain. You go to an Italian supermarket, get some cheese, some tomatoes and pasta and voila - the tastiest dish in the planet is served. Here tomatoes have no flavour whatsoever… and the only choice is pretty much cheddar .

Mother87 · 26/11/2022 09:18

I love fugly shoes and my cookings pretty goodGrin

pictish · 26/11/2022 09:18

I think the opposite is true. I think lots of people who SAY they can’t cook, absolutely could if they bothered their arse to give it a go. Recipes are easy enough to follow…nothing we do in a domestic kitchen requires a high level of skill.
Everyone can cook!

Have you actually been to a British supermarket? Even a small one will have a range of cheese.

On tomatoes, we are a lot further north than Italy and it’s November. But you can buy decent tinned tomatoes in any supermarket.

or you could buy something sensible and seasonal for the uk instead.

Posts like this are just nonsense.

ChilomenaPunk · 26/11/2022 09:21

Italians have better tomatoes, that's true. We can't do much about the climate. You can get nice tasty tomatoes in the UK though.

It's stll pretty easy to make a decent simple pasta dish in the UK as well with supermarket ingredients.

I say I can't cook but to be honest it's more I can't be arsed. Life's too short to mess around in the kitchen when stuff can be bought ready to cook!

It is true though that, I'm going to say 90% of people can't cook.

Depends ,how do you define "cook"?

Tomatoes are one thing but where do you live that you can only get cheddar?

Tulipomania · 26/11/2022 09:23

You haven't met my friends OP.

Most of them are highly competitive about cooking, and worship at the altar of Ottolenghi.

I grow much of my own vegetables and buy meat directly from farmer friends. I know how to cook properly from scratch and make the most of great quality ingredients.

Nonimai · 26/11/2022 09:25

I’m not sure that your title is correct but I get where you are coming from. I believe that the a lot of the food in the supermarkets consists of highly processed, and preserved cheaper food which we have got used to using. That doesn’t necessarily mean people can’t cook, but it does mean that many people don’t cook from scratch as much. Locally a food charity has been set up with a lottery grant as it is recognised that not being able to cook is a recognised issue which contributes to food poverty. They are employing chefs to offer help to food bank users as well as the wider population. Elsewhere there are so many charitable freshly grown food initiatives now - allotments are more popular than ever. It is seen that you can offer free veg but people don’t necessarily know what to do with it.

That’s not true.
I see where you’re coming from and I do agree that we do not have access to the ripest, most flavoursome fruits and vegetables that other countries do…but there is a lot more than just cheddar available out there.
If you live within striking distance of any decent sized town there is a lot of choice to be had.

I think most M&S salads are somewhere between disappointing and actually disgusting tbh. The dressings are rarely nice.

So what? It’s far fresher than anything you’ll get in a hospital.

and the best I can do since the last time I brought in my juicer I was sent away

sashh · 26/11/2022 09:26

PortalooSunset · 26/11/2022 09:09

@sashh are your crispy pancakes Findus? Used to love those as a kid!

Sorry no, they are home made. Made ahead, then I put the stuffing in and warm them in the oven, that makes them extra crispy.

queenofarles · 26/11/2022 09:26

Italians have better tomatoes that’s for sure , but it’s extremely rare for Italians to ever use fresh tomatoes for pasta.

tomatoes season is very short so all tomatoes are cooked then bottled /tinned.

Totally fair enough. I’m not saying people have to cook…it’s more that I disagree with the OP’s pov.
Delicious, nutritious weekday meals are achievable for whoever is inclined to cook them.

TellySavalashairbrush · 26/11/2022 09:28

To be fair I have yet to taste a homemade birthday cake that tastes half as good as a shop bought one. They are always either too dry or too moist.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/11/2022 09:28

As someone who doesn't like cheddar I can confirm there are plenty of other cheeses available!

ShandaLear · 26/11/2022 09:29

Guilty as charged.

Tulipomania · 26/11/2022 09:30

A lot of classic British dishes are actually delicious too if they are cooked properly:

Fish pie
Shepherd's pie
Roast with trimmings
Creme Brûlée (French name but invented here)
Trifle
Apple crumble

DahliaMacNamara · 26/11/2022 09:31

I'm terrible in bed too. And I'm a bit of a shit driver. Are there threads for that as well?

Overcooked courgettes are a crime, I'll give you that, OP.

Horrible texture, too sweet and synthetic tasting.
