compromise with DH about the heating

tysonfanuk · 25/11/2022 22:30

DH doesn't want to put the heating on and the house is freezing. He says gas costs too much money now due to "the torys" or whatever

I do..

Is it worth putting it on for a few hours in the evening only or is it not efficient?

OP posts:
NEmama · 25/11/2022 22:32

Put it on for a couple of hours

JackTorrance · 25/11/2022 22:32

WTF is it with all these men refusing to turn the heating on?! I get that it's horribly expensive now but it's an essential in winter in a cold wet climate.

skippy67 · 25/11/2022 22:32

That's what we've always done.

UsingChangeofName · 25/11/2022 22:38

We've always put it on, only in the evening (and generally an hour in the morning).

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/11/2022 22:38

So many men on here who won’t put the heating on!

I did have a short phase of wanting to not use it out of some sort of spite but then realised it was pointless and hurting no one but ourselves!

Keyansier · 25/11/2022 22:39

Wasn't there just a thread about this??

StarDolphins · 25/11/2022 22:40

I think the heating needs to be on when it’s cold, couple of hours is fine. You’ll end up with condensation/mild etc otherwise.

Devoutspoken · 25/11/2022 22:40

Does he own the heating?

EggsHamChips · 25/11/2022 22:41

Why is it the ‘man’s’ decision? Who made him the king of the fucking heating?

Why do you put up with this bullshit?

Devoutspoken · 25/11/2022 22:42

Keysnsier, it appears to be 2 different posters both with heat controlling partners

IntentionalError · 25/11/2022 22:42

We put ours on for an hour in the morning & two in the evening. Maybe three if it’s very cold. I WFH and I never have it on during the day.

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/11/2022 22:44

This is one of those moments I'm really glad I'm the only person in charge of my heating.

PonyPatter44 · 25/11/2022 22:46

There's a lot of heating threads tonight. My conspiracy theory side says, the Russian moles are back, but my cynical feminist side says that sadly there are too many abusive arsehole men using this as just another excuse to control their partners.

To any woman in this situation, please, if you and / or the children are cold, please put the heating on. Even if you only put it on to take the edge off the cold, and turn it off after a while, you deserve not to be cold.

NCFT0922 · 25/11/2022 22:46

Jesus life is too short to be freezing in your own home! Put the heating on for Christ sake.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/11/2022 22:46

I don’t usually have it on whilst I’m wfh, just an hour or two in the morning and (now it’s colder) two in the evening.

However ds was off sick today so had the heating on which was nice!

luxxlisbon · 25/11/2022 22:47

Is it worth putting it on for a few hours in the evening only or is it not efficient?

I don’t even understand, why wouldn’t it be worth putting it on for only a few hours? It’s not all day or nothing.

NoSquirrels · 25/11/2022 22:47

Is it cold in your house? Y/N

If Y, put the heating on.
If N, leave it switched off.

Merryoldgoat · 25/11/2022 22:47

I’m not joking - I would divorce my husband if he became a prick like this.

When we first moved in together 16 years ago I said to him ‘I won’t live in a cold house under any circumstances so if you’re weird about the heating tell me now’.

The ridiculous competition around the heating drives me fucking mental.

Either you’re cold or you’re not.

If you’re not, no problem.

If you are then either you can afford your heating or you can’t:

If you can’t then that’s a fucking disgrace and I’m angry for you and hate what’s happening with energy prices.

If you can then it goes on and that’s The End.

StillSmallVoice · 25/11/2022 22:48

WTF?!! I am definitely being unreasonable, but being cold makes me both miserable and unproductive. Turn the heat on.

If you can't there are community centres and churches across the country which are turning the heat up and inviting people in. The idea is you can just turn up and be warm.

Not sure where to find them but if you Google warm space you might find them

justcallmebozo · 25/11/2022 22:50

Two posts about DH not allowing the heating to go on, both started this evening, both from posters who haven't posted before today.
Coincidence or troll??

LemonSwan · 25/11/2022 22:50

I have just done the math on this. It’s costing us £5 to heat our home to 21c. It’s 2500sqft. The heatings on 24/7 on a thermostat. Once it’s up to heat it’s only very occasionally clicking on and off on the boiler. And we are actually running two boilers so double the cost.

I would say you are putting it on for a week to see how much it will cost. Or 4 days then another 4 days of trying a different technique to see if it’s cheaper.

LemonSwan · 25/11/2022 22:51

£5 a day! So around £2.50 if we had one boiler.

JetBlackSteed · 25/11/2022 22:53

Do couples who disagree about the heating not have a thermostat that shows actual evidence of the temperature in the house?

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/11/2022 22:54

heating on when cold
heating off when not
So glad I don't have a Dh.

Blimey - I'm in an 860 sq meter flat, and I managed to match that spend the day I left the heating at 19 for 18 hours the other day.
