To ask if you still test for Covid?

This has been on my mind now that the general cough/cold season is upon us.

What do you do if you are having Covid-type symptoms eg cough and temp?

Do you own/pay for LF tests? How often and sparingly do you use them?

It just feels a bit strange this year with no clear guidance...

If I ever test positive I will take days off work and go nowhere. I have enough food at home (frozen batch cooked meals plus frizen soups) to last me at least a week.

If I feel unwell, I stay home. If I feel fine, I carry on as normal. I work outdoors and alone though, so I never come into close contact with anyone.

No.

chikp · 25/11/2022 19:08

Yes if I'm ill and think it might be covid

Autumnalleavestime · 25/11/2022 19:10

No of course not, it’s back to normal life. Covid is reduced to a mild cold like illness for the overwhelming majority, the only exception I’d make if I was seeing a highly vulnerable person and had symptoms.

mathanxiety · 25/11/2022 19:11

I don't see a problem with testing forever.

Why would this be a problem?

I go to the doctor if I think I have strep and get tested in the office. After a positive I get a prescription for antibiotics.

It's the same with covid testing including the prescription.

sleepwouldbenice · 25/11/2022 19:13

If have any covid symptoms esp if I am going to be mixing lots or have mixed lots

user1487194234 · 25/11/2022 19:14

Absolutely not
All back to normal in our house
Thank goodness

This is not what people mean.

Going to hospital or the GP and being tested for whatever you suspect you might have will continue as it always has done.

Buying tests for an illness which you don't think you have but because it's expected you test is madness.

XmasElf10 · 25/11/2022 19:15

I don’t test, I work from home, if I have sufficiently bad symptoms of anything I tend to stay home until I feel better. I no more want to give my replies a bad cold than covid.

4yearsandwaiting · 25/11/2022 19:18

We test if we have symptoms (household of 4) 1 ecv and 2 cv in household, also one nhs ward staff. If ecv member gets symptons we also have a pcr test in house. We however are leading as normal a life as we were able to before covid (we've always had to be careful).

But you don't go to the doctor with no symptoms of strep throat just in case you might have it anyway, which is what people are expected to do with COVID.

🙋‍♀️I did yesterday as I've been feeling really rough. Negative. As far as I'm aware I've never had it. I oscolate between feeling proud of this and wondering if I'm immune (travel widely, particularly in central London, obeyed rules but never been unnecessarily cautious) and terrified that it might still be horrid if I get it.

NightOwl101 · 25/11/2022 19:33

I have to test for work if I have symptoms or someone in my household does.

KnottyKnitting · 25/11/2022 19:41

I have a slight cold at the moment and have a glut of LFT tests that I got through work. Yes did a COVID test as MiL has HUGE health anxiety and she needs quite a bit of support so happy to do the tests. Aside from that I wouldn't bother.

Useyourfork · 25/11/2022 19:49

We all test if we have symptoms

Baconand · 25/11/2022 20:25

thebestcestmoi · 25/11/2022 15:58

And if you DO test positive what precautions do you take? How many days off work? Would you pop to the shops in a mask? That sort of thing.

I just work at home, we are hybrid but can WFH full time if needed (and not too ill). We are asked to WFH if symptomatic of anything now anyway.

I have no issue testing for as long as they exist. They are cheap enough.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/11/2022 20:46

They are cheap enough.

I don't call over £2 a test cheap enough, especially for a family who might need multiple tests.

Exactly - they're not cheap in the slightest. Almost £10 to test a family of four!

HeraldicBlazoning · 25/11/2022 18:28

No testing here.

Common sense approach - if you're not well, limit social contact until you feel better.

Same here. We are applying the same principles as we did pre-Covid ie stay home, limit contact especially in regard to seeing my elderly mum.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/11/2022 21:03

Only if I have symptoms as I'm a nurse. We stopped testing our patients months ago. I know one person who tests and registers twice a week. I can't see why he does.

NeelyOHara1 · 25/11/2022 21:05

I think historians will look back on 2019-2021 and think Governments and people lost their minds and a once in a lifetime opportunity for real system change was lost.

Katyaadlerscoat · 25/11/2022 21:05

I test if I have symptoms(so not often) as I have very elderly parents. Today's test was positive.

ParisHotel · 25/11/2022 21:09

Amboseli · 25/11/2022 15:41

Those who are still testing, when will you stop, if ever? Given covid is here to stay like flu and other general cold viruses.

Why would you stop? In the future we’ll screen for flu more routinely when ill in the U.K. like other countries. You take a urine test to the doctor to see if you’ve got an infection. When covid causes serious problems like long covid for some, those who needs and want testing why stop?
some people are still needing the antivirals to stop them dying. HTH.
Maybe you want to stop antibiotics, all vaccinations and maybe tell diabetics to stop testing their blood glucose as well?

Idunnowhatsgoingon · 25/11/2022 21:47

We have a box of tests for when we have symptoms. I was ill a couple of weeks ago. Tested a couple of times. Negative. Then my partner got ill last weekend. Tested positive on Monday. Then the next day, I started getting symptoms and tested positive yesterday.

Our work place require us to stay away for 5 days with a positive covid result. Whereas, if we didn't test, it would be classed as a cold and we would be expected to be in the office.

Guidelines say to try and stay home for 5 days. So we are.

ReviewingTheSituation · 25/11/2022 21:49

Comparing with diabetics testing their blood glucose is ridiculous. They need to know before every meal (and at other times) so they can administer the correct dose of the medication which keeps them alive.
