Pantomime resistance

FabFitFifties · 25/11/2022 11:51

My just turned 12 year old is saying he doesn't want to go to any pantomimes this year. I had a dread of this last year, so we did 3 🤣, which he did enjoy. Despite anticipating this, I'm still gutted.
YABU - give the kid a break, he's growing up
YANBU - keep chipping away, until he cracks.

Every time he says that, just say "oh yes you do!"

He will probably have a great time if you took him to one - my youngest sister was like this, said she didn't want to do anything family fun related, always had the best time when we actually went!

Sirzy · 25/11/2022 11:56

Having done three last year he is probably bored of them!

can he skip this years and then ask him again next?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 25/11/2022 11:57

Panto is shit. The kid is right

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/11/2022 11:58

I love pantos but he's old enough now to have his own opinion.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 25/11/2022 12:00

They always freaked me out as a kid. I think at 12 and having done THREE last year he's probably over them.

They're not that funny for tweens/teens and become cringy and a bit embarrassing.

It's only then as adults that the nostalgia draws us back in.

NancyJoan · 25/11/2022 12:02

Three last year was kill or cure. Alas it didn’t go your way.

FabFitFifties · 25/11/2022 12:02

He is a child who automatically says no to things, but enjoys them if you can get him there. That's what is making me undecided as to whether to persue- though if we don't book now we won't get tickets. He'd be furious if I just booked, without a yes. I suppose I'm trying to find out if I'm being ridiculous expecting a 12 year old to want to go a panto with his parents. Is this normal for his age? If so, I'll drop it.

OP posts:
TinFoilHatty · 25/11/2022 12:03

I wouldn't be going toe to toe with him. He has declined, respect his opinion.

Nb if you went ahead and bought tickets, and he baulked on the day, how would you get him there? You can't stuff him under your arm like a toddler.

REP22 · 25/11/2022 12:04

I've never really liked pantomimes, either being in the cast of one or in the audience. Could you book and go with an adult friend instead if you want to go but he really doesn't?

meanderingthrough · 25/11/2022 12:06

MistyGreenAndBlue · 25/11/2022 11:57

Panto is shit. The kid is right

Oh no it isn't.

FabFitFifties · 25/11/2022 12:07

Exactly - I won't book without a yes. It's a bummer when you only have 1 child, and they grow out of these phases. I don't think it would have been ethical to have another, just so I could keep going to panto etc though🤔

OP posts:
Eleusa · 25/11/2022 12:08

Twelve is peak resistance, I think- they don't want anyone to think they're enjoying it as a little kid would. You have to wait until they come out the other side of that.

If you enjoy it, go with your partner or a friend. You're allowed to enjoy this stuff without a child with you 😁

GoingtotheWinchester · 25/11/2022 12:08

I love the idea of having more kids just to go to Panto 😂😂

FabFitFifties · 25/11/2022 12:10

OK, thankyou everyone, I'm going to have one last go, then give in gracefully, and either book on my own, or be content with the things I have booked with friends.

PeeJayDay · 25/11/2022 12:10

I hate panto. Why is it so long?

PigLightingBastard · 25/11/2022 12:10

Every time he says that, just say "oh yes you do!"

Every time.

Tinktravels · 25/11/2022 12:10

Go without him?
I go on ith just my fiance 😂

SerenaTee · 25/11/2022 12:10

Is it the panto you want to see or do you just want to do a Christmas activity with him? If it’s the latter, find something else you can do together.

I hate panto too, I don’t blame him!

KittieDaley · 25/11/2022 12:11

Go with a friend. I'm so glad I now have the excuse of grandchildren, to go to the panto with them.

AriettyHomily · 25/11/2022 12:11

I don't blame him at all!

FabFitFifties · 25/11/2022 12:11

I definitely won't be having any more children for this purpose at 53 😁

I heard Pantomime Resistance on 6Music the other day

erinaceus · 25/11/2022 12:14

Can you go to something else instead? At 12 a pantomime is hardly compelling. A musical might be a better fit.

America12 · 25/11/2022 12:15

I don't blame him , I always hated them. Not fair to try and force him.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 25/11/2022 12:17

meanderingthrough · 25/11/2022 12:06

Oh no it isn't.

Oh yes it is
