Boss called in sick to Christmas party

Our boss called in sick to our Christmas party. AIBU? Shouldn't he be leading by example? He has form though, he cancelled our in-office day once due to the rain, which I was actually relieved by.

OP posts:
saraclara · 24/11/2022 21:25

Most people would prefer that their boss wasn't at the Christmas party

dolor · 24/11/2022 21:29

Ohhhh dear LOL

onlythreenow · 24/11/2022 21:30

Why does it matter?

ilovemotorways · 24/11/2022 21:36

Do you always form such weird and nonsensical conclusions?

He's sick.
He is setting an example that it's OK to be unwell and call in sick. Really important especially nowadays when so many employees are made to feel guilty for missing work

'Leading by example' in the way you've used it suggests that the Christmas do is mandatory and enforced rather than actually being something people want to attend.

Did you still have a good time at the party?

ZenNudist · 24/11/2022 21:47

I think everyone saying YABU is taking boss at his word that he's genuinely ill in which case yes it's only fair for him not to be there. My sense is you know him well enough and it's too much if a coincidence that he's ill for this event. It's shit if leaders don't make an effort. Many of us find work socials an inconvenience we'd rather avoid. It would be easier to cry off.

I generally enjoy myself when I make the effort. I have to go anyway to set a good example of participation and to avoid alienating my team. I bet you know your boss well enough to know he just CBA.

Backtoblack1 · 24/11/2022 21:53

Is this real?

87SPD · 24/11/2022 21:53

YesItIsI · 24/11/2022 20:48

Would you rather he turned up and infected everyone with flu/cold/covid/noro etc etc?

Yabu for having your Xmas party when it's barely the end of November.

😂

Untitledsquatboulder · 24/11/2022 21:57

Better than my manager who turned up with (what turned out to be) normal one year and took out half the office. Idiot.

Untitledsquatboulder · 24/11/2022 21:58

Oh ffs sake! Noro, he had norovirus.

Brigante9 · 24/11/2022 21:59

I told 2 people in my team to stay off this week. I’m quite cross that they came in unwell, tbh. Why push yourself when you’re genuinely unwell and then spread that shit around? They wouldn’t be working well, they’re not well, I’d rather they stayed off and got properly better. Is your boss-shocker-sick?!

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 24/11/2022 21:59

Zone2NorthLondon · 24/11/2022 21:12

Maybe he hates you all

Nah. If he hated them all, he'd give them all a dose of whatever he's got.

Thisisconfusing · 24/11/2022 21:59

YABVVVU . If your boss is ill , they are leading you example by not infecting the whole team which would be a bad thing for your workplace . It’s a shame the pandemic hasn’t put an end to this idea (well in your case ) that presentism at all costs is a good thing. It really isn’t .

Cancelledtwiceover · 24/11/2022 22:00

Are you at the Christmas Party now op ? sounds like the boss knew it would be dull if his staff are on mumsnet whinging about him.

Speedweed · 24/11/2022 22:03

If you don't think he's genuinely ill, and he has sudden and recent form for last minute cancellations and no shows for work functions, he's on his way out the door OP. Expect him to hand his notice in in the new year...

Dave20 · 24/11/2022 22:03

Bit early for Xmas parties isn’t it ?

Unicorn717 · 24/11/2022 22:04

Not sure what the problem is?

He was ill and didn't come go a party. Would you have gone if you were ill?

Or Maybe he just thought fuck it and preferred a night at home. Which is something I would do.

Pebbles16 · 24/11/2022 22:15

I had a team celebration booked today, I am their director. Threw up three times between 7-8am and thought Fuck That. Luckily my team are all adults, had cheap lunch on me and the promise of a proper celebration soon.
It's work, shit happens and everyone should be a grown up

BigChesterDraws · 24/11/2022 22:16

I cave see why it’s of any concern to you. Unless you fancy him and were hoping for a drunken snog by the photocopier.

Maybe he’s ill, maybe he’s not. Unless you are his doctor you’ll never know. Nor do you need to know.

determinedtomakethiswork · 24/11/2022 22:17

God, I would've loved it if my boss hadn't gone to the party.

Bingobangodrinkacanoftango · 24/11/2022 22:18

Unless your Christmas party is actually some time in December and he’s let you know he will be sick ahead of time YABU 😂

BigChesterDraws · 24/11/2022 22:18

Dave20 · 24/11/2022 22:03

Bit early for Xmas parties isn’t it ?

I’m waiting for the drip-feed that this happened 6 Christmases ago and the OP is still stewing over it.

Shutthegatepeter · 24/11/2022 22:18

Do people in managerial roles not get ill?

PlasticTatMNBingo · 24/11/2022 22:19

Maybe your boss thinks you're all batshit...

WTF475878237NC · 24/11/2022 22:20

We always book ours for end of November as it's cheaper.

Anyway, sounds like he's leading by example by not showing up sick.

SquigglePigs · 24/11/2022 22:21

Yes definitely leading by example that dragging yourself to work related things when you're ill is not only bad for you but unfair to your colleagues who don't want your bugs.
