Boss called in sick to Christmas party

Our boss called in sick to our Christmas party. AIBU? Shouldn't he be leading by example? He has form though, he cancelled our in-office day once due to the rain, which I was actually relieved by.

OP posts:
Changechangychange · 24/11/2022 21:08

Nope you are right OP, far better he turn up and pass on norovirus or covid to the whole department. That’s what a true leader would do.

minou123 · 24/11/2022 21:08

As far as I'm aware, and I stand corrected if not, but Christmas Parties are not mandatory.

I dont think I've ever seen anything that states bosses have to attend the Christmas Party as it shows leadership skills.

In fact if anything sometimes the boss not showing up, sick or not, is better.

Anniegetyourgun · 24/11/2022 21:09

I've never called in sick to a Christmas party. I just tell them up-front that I'm not going to attend. So whether I'm sick or not (I was last year) it won't make a difference to anyone.

fancyfrogs · 24/11/2022 21:09

Is it some kind of strange mandatory party?? Yabu

WhatWouldHopperDo · 24/11/2022 21:10

I hope mine doesn’t show up to ours. He’s a knob!

ParisHotel · 24/11/2022 21:11

Eh? You think everyone would thank him for taking down the whole office with whatever they’ve got?

Zone2NorthLondon · 24/11/2022 21:12

Maybe he hates you all

WaddleAway · 24/11/2022 21:12

Well… was he sick? In which case, what else was he supposed to do? Go to the party and spread it around while feeling miserable?

CarefreeMe · 24/11/2022 21:12

My boss hasn’t been in all week, neither have over a quarter of the staff as they all have covid or D&V.

He could be lying but considering most people are getting sick right now he’s probably telling the truth.

Does it really matter if he’s not there?

BatshitBanshee · 24/11/2022 21:13

Maybe he's sick, maybe he just can't face looking at the same faces he sees everyday and making small talk. Either way it's not mandatory and that's his choice. Also Xmas parties when you're the boss aren't that enjoyable, usually a mix of kiss arses and people who want to tell you everything you've done wrong.

Unless you're like a previous boss of mine who drank so much he passed out face down while going to town on a colleague, finger in the face and everything, and then pissed himself.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/11/2022 21:13

I’m going to be calling in sick at mine!

Make willing, don't go, call and whack £200 behind the bar and (separately) pre-order glasses of fizz and a round of shots for all on arrival.

Team get to party on my dollar without me - everyone’s a winner!

Booklover3 · 24/11/2022 21:13

For some people Christmas isn’t a happy time. Regardless it’s none of your business.

chikp · 24/11/2022 21:14

Wtf

chikp · 24/11/2022 21:15

Also it's not even December yet

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/11/2022 21:16

It's a Christmas Party? He's not letting anyone down by not attending surely? Unless he's paying, in which case he should delegate that to someone else on the company account.

My boss departs shortly after dessert usually, so everyone can let loose properly without fear of big boss judgement.

CarefreeMe · 24/11/2022 21:17

That’s really good of them and I’d do the same if I was a boss.

Whydothat · 24/11/2022 21:17

You don't HAVE to go to a works Christmas party. I've made excuses not to go to mine but actually I just don't want to go. Next year I'll probably have to be sick 😷

AuntieEntity · 24/11/2022 21:18

Both of my bosses have made it very clear that they hate Christmas and everything associated with it, and it would be a cold day in Hell that you'd see either of them at a Christmas party. That hasn't stopped the staff from organising an event. Why would it?

EmmaAgain22 · 24/11/2022 21:18

stuntbubbles · 24/11/2022 20:46

Perhaps he’s leading by example by showing that it’s OK to phone in sick when you’re sick, and that health is more important than work. Wild notion.

Agree. Wish more bosses did this!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 24/11/2022 21:18

It’s not a Christmas party.

It’s November. It’s just a party.

He didn’t come to a party. Because he’s unwell.

Why would anyone, boss or not, drag their poorly arse to a random party?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/11/2022 21:19

Why are you so upset by this to the point you're posting it on MN?

Also, why are you having a Christmas party in November?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2022 21:19

If he’s sick it’s much better that he doesn’t go and infect you all. Surely no one would thank him for that?

stuntbubbles · 24/11/2022 21:20

Were you hoping to do your review over the sausage rolls and smash some KPIs along with the stale Pringles? Maybe you can Teams call him from the dancefloor with an urgent client query.

ShandaLear · 24/11/2022 21:20

Good for him. Christmas parties are awful.
