To think travellers should be weighed WITH their luggage when travelling.

I'm prepared for backlash.

I was charged excess for my hand luggage as it was over a certain weight- that's absolutely fine. The combined total weight for myself and my cabin baggage was approx 69 kg. My friend wasn't charged because their luggage wasn't overweight yet the combined total for them and their luggage was over 90kg. My friend joked about how unfair it was.

Surely it would be fairer to use the combined weigh of traveller and cabin luggage to determine and excess fees due?

I'm going to assume your friend is bigger then you so also assuming that naturally their clothes are bigger and therefore weigh more. They would also need to use more toiletries because, you know, they're bigger. And again, I'm going to assume their feet and shoes are bigger so yet again, more weight. Yet your bigger friend still managed to pack their case to the correct weight and you and your skinny arse didn't..... hmm, interesting that ey?

Ineedwinenow · 24/11/2022 16:51

This is an unpopular opinion but I was in a window seat and a rather overweight gentleman sat next to me and encroached ( fully) on me and my seat! I was squashed in with his various body parts touching me ( arms, stomach, thigh and legs) (clothed obviously 😆) for four long painful hours, he was constantly sweating which wasn’t pleasant and put the aircon on so I was freezing, so yes passengers should be allocated seating based on weight! It’s was an horrendous journey which costs me hundreds! The cabin crew just smiled sympathetically to me!

Whiskyvodka · 24/11/2022 16:52

I am quite slight.
I don't care what others weigh it's how they spread that irritates me.
Nothing worse than someone encroaching on your personal space for 3 hours because airline seats are too small for larger people.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 24/11/2022 16:54

Will you weigh me with my wheelchair or without?

Bakergram · 24/11/2022 16:55

4yearsandwaiting · 24/11/2022 16:32

You'd love travelling with my family we have two extra carry on luggage with medical equipment/medication plus a wheelchair I'm sure our excess would be extortionate if we had to pay for it.

You’re being very presumptuous….. I travel with medical equipment for DS.

Exactly.
It's horrible isn't it.
I do think airlines should have a few seats that people can choose with extra width room.

Nocutenamesleft · 24/11/2022 16:55

All that would happen would be lighter people having to take EVERYONES stuff! 😂

Ha ha, I had this exact same experience but the gentleman in question was also coughing up blood. This was on a flight from London to Nairobi, back in the good old days when coughing up blood was seen as nought more than a peccadillo.

jamoncrumpets · 24/11/2022 16:58

Look we had the old 'fat people are gross on planes' thread a few weeks ago, and I just don't have the spoons today to read all about how many of you think people like me are disgusting and lazy.

The whole premise of this thread is vile.

SenoritaNaturista · 24/11/2022 16:58

Genuine question - please can you let me know which airline OP? - as I want to avoid.

I would be in the same category as you OP, just feeling thankful that my cabin bag hasn’t been weighed for the last 30 flights (TUI / Jet2 / Enter Air / Titan)
Probably the last time was Thomas Cook before they went under…

😆😆😆 you win! It’s nice to know there’s always someone worse off than yourself in similar situations! 😆I hope you didn’t get covered in blood!

Many do, It’s called business class or something along those lines.

so many people are assuming my friend is obese and turning this into a fat shaming suggestion.

They are over a foot taller than me and exceptionally muscly.

For the record, I’m not skinny.

You however are presumptuous and rude. You have more if an issue with body size than I do as you’ve assumed it’s fat v skinny.

I tried my best to move or blag an upgrade! The flight was full unfortunately so yes there should be seats available for these types of situations ( that come with free booze as an apology) 😆

cinnabongene · 24/11/2022 17:00

Teeny tinies, who haven’t lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like, please don’t let me down.

Not all flights have business class!! Ours was a domestic. Love your optimistic outlook and problem solving skills though 👍

Bakergram · 24/11/2022 17:02

RosesAndHellebores · 24/11/2022 16:45

If you weigh 25% to 30% less than your friend. Smaller clothes presumably, how on earth was your luggage heavier than hers unless you packed far too much crap.

The content of your luggage is discretionary. The volume of another human is not.

Also depending on your friend's height, 90kg is not necessarily obese and probably not grossly so.

I didn’t say they were obese but so many have assumed that. They are substantially taller than me and very, very muscly.

OP posts:
ReneBumsWombats · 24/11/2022 17:02

It's more to do with the limits on baggage handlers and how much it's safe to lift than the weight on the plane.

Whiskyvodka · 24/11/2022 17:02

Palmfrond · 24/11/2022 16:56

I think I would have a panic attack in those circumstances.
My dm once offered a pack of tissues to a man that kept sniffing.
I think we're all too polite.
Nobody wants to sit near the fat person, not even the slightly less fat person.
It's not their size, it's the lack of allocated space and the airline should provide better seats albeit more costly.
That sounds shocking I know but it's true.
I'd sooner sit near a screaming dc tbh.

If your friend is 90 with hand luggage that means they are around 80 as hand luggage tends to be 10kg
and you would be around 55-60

im obese as per nhs (similar weight to your friend )… and I’m far from body shaming your friend … I’m more shaming your idea that people should pay more jusr because they weight more … you skinny anorexic person ? £10. You fat obese lazy woman ? £150. Can’t you really see how this would be more body shaming rather than what most of us are saying?

Good old Sleasy Jet! Cabin baggage has been weighed at the door for the last 5/6 flights with them.

It's not a lot of use if you're travelling Ryanair.
