Feeling awfully judged and wondering if anyone has an opinion on this?

My opinion is that mothers who breastfeed older toddlers/kids is that it’s more for their needs rather than the child’s. If you stopped tomorrow I wonder if your child would be bothered?

What do you gain from breastfeeding him? (Im genuinely interested, not being arsey!)

I hope to bf as long as possible because I believe it reduces my child's likelihood of developing Crohn's disease (which her father has) and it might increase her likelihood of outgrowing the many, many allergies she has.

Crazy that bf toddlers needs to be justified when people routinely give their toddlers sweets and ice cream and chicken nuggets. What an upside down world.

janglealltheway · 24/11/2022 15:28

I fed DD until she was 3. It was only at home from about 18 months, mostly just at bedtime, sometimes more if she was poorly.

What you produce is not milk , don’t fool yourself only because it’s white . I understand it provides some comfort for your child but it definitively doesn’t provide nutrition. Sorry but Little Britain comes to mind here 😂he goes to nursery, he’s out of nappies , he feeds himself, I would stop before it became a problem.

reference please for this groundbreaking bit of science?

100%. Or even cow's milk, really.

pompei8309 · 24/11/2022 15:31

elephantonacid is a very low value liquid , the nutritional content is close to zero

But why though? Not being goady, just wondering what the actual reason is?

It's inherent in the answer OP! Everything has a stage, in terms of childhood, in my view. Nappy-wearing, weaning, sleeping in a cot - and breast feeding. They don't need it beyond a certain age, and developmentally they are ready to move on

(With same caveat as my other posts - none of my business etc)

But there's a massive range for toilet training. I know some babies who toilet trained before two, and others who were still in night nappies at 6. So surely just as logical for there to be a massive natural range in when children want to breastfeed until?

dandyma · 24/11/2022 15:35

I think when you or your child are ready and done with it. I fed my DD to 2.5. Never thought I would but it just carried on and never felt strange to me. She shook off colds like they were nothing coincidentally.

People who find it weird, whether they are consciously aware of it or not, is probably because society has sexualized breasts.

Santagiveyoursackawash · 24/11/2022 15:35

Because he is a fully formed dc with hopefully a balanced diet...

A couple of friends who I told (one my son asked for boob in front of her and he was only 2.5 at the time) and my two aunts and one of their husbands.

It really is
What I find funny is how many people outraged at the idea of human offspring having human milk in early childhood think nothing of feeding cow milk, from cow boobies to human children. 🤷‍♀️

Cup of cow milk from cow breasts, fine
Human milk from human breasts, not fine.

And they'll still tie themselves in knots that they don't have problematic attitudes towards women's breasts

a balanced diet that includes breastmilk. So what's the problem? Does your DC's balanced diet include cow's milk?

absolutely - all comes down to the fact society has sexualized women's bodies. It's very depressing.

There isn't one. Hilarious that someone came on here and told me my breast milk isn't milk (god knows what it is then) and has now flounced off in a huff. This AIBU was going all too well.

Too long is longer than you/the child want to. Anything else is fine <3

Agree!

Problemorno · 24/11/2022 15:38

I remember a few weeks back my MIL was looking after DS (breastfed). She seemed almost disgusted by the bags of breastmilk I'd left for her in the fridge, yet the cartons of cow breastmilk kept in the very same fridge were okay 🤷‍♀️

Todaynotalways · 24/11/2022 15:39

Above all - I uphold each of our right's to breastfeed for as little, or as long, as is right for the mother and child.

Personally, I feel uncomfortable breastfeeding being used for comfort (rather than nutrition) because I feel like I should be educating my children on how to operate in the world, how to engage with people verbally for reassurance, building their resilience, helping them carve their own identity and confidence. Those characteristics will be important to them as they grow.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/11/2022 15:09

Honest question, if a child does not breast feed for a week does there continue to be a milk supply?

I struggled to feed and ds was fed only until 8 weeks and dd stopped being interested at about 8 months (there was far too much going on during 1/2 term for her to stay latched). Therefore I have no experience of extended bf.

In my experience, yes. DD lost interest at 13 months but I could still squeeze some out 3 months later (tried out of curiosity!) Pregnant again after that and too sore to care so I don't know how long it would have taken to completely dry up. DS now 2 and feeding maybe once every 2 or 3 days with no problem. I'm hoping he's not far off self weaning now because I've had enough.
