Am I being tracked?

I'm in the process of separating from my husband. He is currently looking for somewhere to live and in the meantime we have each been spending time away from the house to give each other space. I live in London and last week I went to stay in Manchester for 2 days for work as we have offices there. Usually i stay in hotels but last week I stayed with a friend who lives nearby, and the week before i did the same. Last week, I called home to speak to our children and he asked questions about where I was etc. I gave vague replies as no longer feel i need to be held accountable for every move. He then relayed my full movements to me while I was away and the previous week - how I'd worked at a house in x Street, gone to the office the following day, returned to the house in the evening etc. He says he got this information from the messages we've sent to each other. We only use WhatsApp but from all the research I've done, I have no idea how he's managed to get this level of information. I feel freaked out and don't know what to do next. Aibu to think I've somehow been tracked? How do I get it to stop?

My Google timeliness would give you all that info.

My kids laptops have access on their chrome because I set up the computer and they have my settings.

They also get all my cookies so can see adverts for everything I have browsed.....which means no surprises at Xmas!!

Air tags now bleep every 2 hours or so when not with their owner so you'd know if it was near you.

You can remove the speakers in five mins, plenty of YouTube videos showing you how to silence them. I have AirTags in my bike frames which are silenced.

PotatoRabbit · 23/11/2022 06:46

There are apps to show whether there are airtags nearby for android phones on Google play

HeresTheTea · 23/11/2022 06:52

Download Tracker Detect app from the Samsung play store - it will scan for airtags and alert you if there is one near you

Stravaig · 23/11/2022 07:07

I spotted this in the latest iPhone update - is there something similar for your phone?

Am I being tracked?
Lovelittlethings · 23/11/2022 07:15

Thank you so much for your advice everyone. I used tracker detect and it said no airtags near me, and I've reset the passwords to all my Google accounts so hopefully it should stop now. I'm going to a conference in another part of the UK today until Friday so I'll see if he mentions anything again.

Why not message your friend stating your going to the conference in a totally different town, a red herring and see if he quotes the false place at you

OP:
It's not enough to change Google password, you need to log out every connected device and then change password on one of your own safe devices.
Instructions on how to do this and also to see all devices associated to your account.

MermaidMummy06 · 23/11/2022 08:27

You'll need to change your password, then use Google's log out of all devices function.

Also, think about every connected account or app and check settings. A while ago I discovered by accident I could see DH's exact location via our then mobile provider account app. It was on by default. Not a problem for us as I never looked but shocked me all the same.

I'd consider changing all passwords contained on Google he may have copied them & can access a lot of personal info.

Bumzoo · 23/11/2022 09:11

WhatsApp would show that much detail so he's definitely lying.

PragmaticWench · 23/11/2022 09:15

I have a Samsung and randomly discovered I could see all of DH's locations/trips for the last year or two on my phone. It's linked via Google and a Gmail account address.

LaBellina · 23/11/2022 09:19

What’s app does NOT share your location unless you allow them (share my location). What might be an option is Facebook, I vaguely recall that in the past you could use the option of constantly sharing your location with certain friends. But even then I very much doubt it would be THAT precise and constantly updating.

Check your phone for spyware and check all your stuff for trackers. This is seriously concerning behavior.

Thank you so much for this. I followed the link and found another device I didn't recognise so I've logged out of it.

Agree - he quoted the exact street I stayed in.

Please write all this down.

what he said and when. Which bits of what he said were impossible for him to know without tracking you. And as much about the device you found that you didn’t recognise.

The most dangerous time for a woman is when she’s leaving an abusive or controlling man. If he does it again, or escalates when he realises you’ve deleted that device and changed passwords, you want to have a clear note of this incident in case you need to speak to the police.

It IS Whatsapp, my partner put it on my phone (for a laugh and with consent) so when i was out on a night out we would test it to see if showed up location. it did work and is obviously now removed but was actually quite scary that you can do that. It is something to do with location services on your phone.

Enable location permissions for WhatsApp in your phone's Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > App permissions > Location > turn on WhatsApp. Alternatively, if you recently opened WhatsApp, you can go to your phone's Settings > Apps & notifications > WhatsApp > Permissions > turn on Location.

A man I was seeing did something very similar to me when I broke up from him.
what he had done was take my phone when I went to shower at his- lucky for him my passcode locks after 2 minutes. He quickly got WhatsApp Web browser up on his computer and opened my WhatsApp on his screen! Clicked the option where it stayed signed in to my WhatsApp indefinitely until he manually clicked ‘sign outj. Turned the screen off so it looked like his computer was off when I walked back in the room.
tracked me for two months.

used to randomly say “I know it’s last minute but I miss you and wondered if you wanted to hang out. I’m thinking Regents Park’ 🤪 when I’d be heading to that park at that moment with someone!
he also lived nowhere near that park!
i was so creeped out, going mad!
