How cold is your kids' school

Just had an email from my kid's school about their energy bill and having to keep costs down. My kid alongside others and the teachers have already been complaining about the cold. Our school's bill has gone up by 50k and they cant bridge it. Is there a petition going, a demo, anyone writing to their MP. This is obviously ridiculous but will anyone put pressure on government to give schools and other institutions additional money for heating

We’ve had the heating on and all the windows open (cos that’s still a thing). It’s brassic.

greenacrylicpaint · 22/11/2022 17:50

dc school (not uk) wrote to parents that they will reduce to the legal minimum, 18 degrees, to reduce costs.
pupils are advised to wear weather appropriate clothes. most do that anyway as they cycle to school.

brusselsprout5 · 22/11/2022 17:51

It's been Baltic in ours this past week. Heating on til10am then off for rest of the day. But by lunchtime it's 17°, apparently fine as minimum 16°. By 2.30pm yesterday it was 13°. Ridiculous! Some of these children will be going home to cold houses so school needs to be their safe, warm place.

ShowOfHands · 22/11/2022 17:54

I work at the secondary school where DD is in y11 and the heating went on a fortnight ago. It's warm, usually around 20.

Primary school is really hot!

FancyFanny · 22/11/2022 17:58

I work in a primary school- there is no heating on! The head is sitting in her lovely office with the door shut and nice fan heater next to her. The rest of us are freezing!

OoooohMatron · 22/11/2022 18:21

Just asked DD in year 7 at a state secondary and she said its fine and she's always cold like me!

Athenen0ctua · 22/11/2022 18:27

I don't know the temperature, but warm enough for shirt, trousers and suit jacket as DS hasn't been taking his jumper.

If the minimum if 16 then shouldn't it be 16 at home time?

Girasoli · 22/11/2022 18:31

DC1 comes home every day with his jumper in his book bag so I assume fine.

hwf53hwu8u · 22/11/2022 18:33

We checked that there is no minimum temp since 2012 so it could be anything. Both kids and teachers are complaining that it's too cold. But apparently there is no more cash

Primary school - it is chilly but not absolutely freezing in classrooms themselves, though all heating in little used areas like corridors and cloakrooms is now off. Children are recommended to bring blankets/extra jumpers - it’s much like last year with the open window thing in that regard. Staff aren’t thrilled but the kids all seem happy enough, and there’s just not much alternative.

WombatStewForTea · 22/11/2022 18:37

Our school is comfortable at the moment and our head is sensible so won't let it drop to a silly level.
But our energy bill estimate has gone from 120% increase to 180% increase. It's going to be crippling

RobinRobinMouse · 22/11/2022 18:39

This is going to be the case for a lot of schools, some may even have to make a choice between heating or staff. Ours is chilly but not too bad for now. Fortunately windows no longer have to be open. What this government are doing to schools and education is shameful.

neverbeenskiing · 22/11/2022 18:41

I work in a secondary school and we don't have the heating on. It is so cold I am finding it difficult to focus. The kids are complaining. I was in today from 7.30 am til about 6pm and never took my coat off. Even in a big winter coat and lots of layers it is not pleasant at all. But needs must. We'd rather have no heating than be warm and have to lose staff, although I fear it will come to that anyway when bills go up again in April.

OhmygodDont · 22/11/2022 18:41

None of the children have complained. Youngest always comes out cardigan off and when I was in for some stay and read it was toasty

PeekAtYou · 22/11/2022 18:44

My son's school now allows kids to take off their coats inside the school building (but outside classrooms) rather than forcing them to take off coats before they pass the gates.

Busybody2022 · 22/11/2022 18:47

Ours is toasty. They've just had a new boiler and heating system so I somewhat assume the efficiencies from that negate the increased costs from energy rises

Notanotherone6 · 22/11/2022 18:48

Teenagers haven't complained yet (and there were a lot of complaints last year due to windows being open!) so I'm assuming it's ok. Primary seemed fine when I went in this morning.

Brighteyedtriangle · 22/11/2022 18:50

My DD comes home without a cardigan that she went in wearing every day without fail so Im guessing not that cold

neverbeenskiing · 22/11/2022 18:53

will anyone put pressure on government to give schools and other institutions additional money for heating

Our HT has been open about the fact that the
D of E have made it absolutely crystal clear there is going to be no additional help for schools. The expectation is that schools "make savings elsewhere". Because obviously before the energy crisis we were being extravagant, spending money on frivolous stuff like TA's and occasionally repairing bits of the building that are actually crumbling🙄

RealBecca · 22/11/2022 18:55

In your shoes I'd explain to school that you want to fundraise for it. Either they will be happy for the extra money to pay for it or they may look again if they are concerned about the reputation of the school. Dont know that you'll be happy if they find the money from cutting something your child likes though.

Somethingvague · 22/11/2022 18:56

Primary school teacher. Our heating has been on fairly constantly. Toasty and warm.
Don't know how long it'll last or if there's a plan for how much it's costing!

FourTeaFallOut · 22/11/2022 18:57

I don't know. I haven't had any complaints but then my lot are hardened coat dodgers.

DinosApple · 22/11/2022 18:57

The heating has clicked in a few times over the last few days in the primary I work in.
It is set to come on at 18 degrees I think. Some classes retain the heat better than others. This year we've not opened the windows much at all when the children are indoors- just air the room at break and lunch. We'll have to take our

We all really wrap up though as it's a 1960s building - loads of windows, not a lot of insulation!

My DDs both wear thermals to secondary school. Same issue with the building too.

There's no heating on yet, plus they aren't allowed coats (they don't have blazers either). They're really cold.
It's pretty cold at home too.

ForestofD · 22/11/2022 18:57

My eldest has started wearing a vest to school.

Head said energy costs have increased by £200,000 this year. There was an audible gasp from the parent's when he said that.
