Should MNHQ Keep the 'Similar Threads' feature?

IMO this 'You might also like' feature revives Zombie threads, causes Active Convos to be cluttered up with threads that are no longer relevant (The wedding was 6 months ago, hopefully she found a frock!) and generally makes MN feel like a dentists waiting room full of out of date magazines.

YANBU - The feature should go
YABU - It enhances my use of MN no end, how did we ever manage without it?

Massively annoying and I always feel compelled to scan the OP posts in case it's been revived due to an update from them, rather than some numpty posting advice on a very specific situation 8 years later.

MeridianB · 21/11/2022 20:19

Nope. It sometimes feels that they just pick dev options out of a hat.

BigScreen · 21/11/2022 20:25

No. Its awful.

HereComeTheGrannies · 21/11/2022 20:26

I agree it should go but @JustineMumsnet has made it very clear our complaints are pointless and will not be listened to.

Are you for real? Which threads, exactly, are 'timeless'? If they're THAT good they'll be in Classics. Or do I mean 'Classics' since they're mostly works of complete fiction.

Penis Beaker? Maybe that was timeless. Grin And fiction.

MichaelGovesLeftNostril · 21/11/2022 20:41

Exactly that sort of thing Sparklingbrook Grin

AutumnCrow · 21/11/2022 20:54

Penis Beaker was certainly timeless for knobheads.

BIWI · 21/11/2022 21:04

So 29 people think it enhances their usage of MN. But none of them have posted or said why. I'd be really interested to know what they think!

SalviaOfficinalis · 21/11/2022 19:19

Yes, I must admit it did annoy me that you put the options in the opposite order to the voting buttons. Off to get a life now…

Fair enough. Now if there was an edit button……😉

Agreed surely if it was that good they would be able to explain why, although MNHQ have failed to do that too to be fair.

I think they just clicked the wrong one as OP accidentally tried to catch us all out 😂 I had to read it twice. Kept me on my toes!

Now where's that edit button?!

Dontaskdontget · 21/11/2022 21:29

It’s a rubbish feature for all the reasons you mentioned.

Also, it’s a stupid algorithm designed to create insultingly narrow interests. So maybe I read a thread on a wedding. That doesn’t mean I then want to read another 5 threads also about weddings, that isn’t how the brain works. If anything, reading a thread about a wedding makes me bored of weddings and wanting something different!

It’s like a bad imitation of the worst feature of Facebook/Twitter.

PriamFarrl · 21/11/2022 21:39

The only possible use I can see is if someone has started a thread asking for recommendations about a certain item and then there are further threads about what push chair/air fryer/mattress to get.

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2022 21:56

It feels like the bizarre recommendations that you get on Amazon based on your recent purchases, or Spotify assuming you might like all of these bands' music because you like one song in the genre.

MadelineUsher · 21/11/2022 22:23

Implemented rashly after a brainstorming session while on glue, it seems.

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 21/11/2022 23:37

I've already posted my feelings on the Site Stuff thread so this is just a shameless bump for the members on other time zones.

JaneJeffer · 21/11/2022 23:37

@TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet every time I see your name I have to sing the song

I've just had another one from May in my threads I'm on.

@TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet every time I see your name I have to sing the song

I hope that's a good thing! Grin

JaneJeffer · 22/11/2022 00:09

You wouldn't say that if you heard me @TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet a lot of key changes in that song Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 22/11/2022 00:51

I mostly use the iPad app so don't have this 'feature', just occasional old threads reappearing in my watch or threads I'm on. Hmm
Might be ok if it was restricted to very recent threads I suppose.

DramaAlpaca · 22/11/2022 01:12

Nope, MN doesn't need this feature. It's thoroughly irritating, especially as so many users have complained about the revival of zombie threads. This just encourages it. It's such a stupid idea, but hey it no doubt gets MN more clicks, so...

angharadsgoat · 22/11/2022 01:19

Depends on the thread, but generally no.

greekalphabet · 22/11/2022 06:31

Am not liking this feature at all. Far more threads in Active seen to be older ones that have been revived. I feel sorry for the OPs of sensitive threads that suddenly resurface.
