to ask if anyone has had positive results from using a weighted blanket.

I have considered buying this type of blanket for a good while, as I have awful problems with staying asleep.
I did see that Aldi were selling them for £35.
what put me off buying, was that nowhere on the packaging, stated the size of it.
therefore I am left wondering if their one is for a single person to use, or if me and my man could fit comfortably.
I would appreciate reading your experience of buying and using one whether that’s you as an individual, or as part of a couple.
many thanks in anticipation…

Whoooops, forgot to ask if you should use the blanket above or under the duvet?
surely you don’t use it instead of a duvet?
please excuse my lack of knowledge re this subject!
thank you 🥰

I used it and had good results, it needs to be 15% if your weight I think. Two separate ones would be better than one big one.

wildseas · 21/11/2022 05:45

I have one which I really like - I think I sleep better and feel less anxious when I’m using it.

i use a duvet like usual and then put it over the duvet

VeganFromSveden · 21/11/2022 05:48

Thank you both .
I read somewhere that it’s should be 10 or 12% of your body weight.
luckily my man and I are roughly same weight.

I have a single size one which has a removable cover so I use mine under the duvet with duvet that I share with dh on top. It definitely helps me sleep especially in the middle of the night

madmumofteens · 21/11/2022 05:50

I bought one for my daughter she loves it says it is really helping her anxiety 🥰

Weighted blankets are one person things as they should be lighter for smaller people and heavier for larger. If it's over two people it won't be doing it's job as the larger will be probably supporting the weight as it rests on them first, plus two bodies under it will mean it doesn't fall right and give that "hugged" feeling.

It's highly unlikely both members of a couple would want a weighted blanket anyway - they're a very specific thing and more people would dislike than appreciate sleeping under one.

My youngest child has always had sleep issues and has one he uses it only when he's feeling restless, worried and can't sleep. He finds it comforting then, but leaves it at the end of the bed most of the time. He has a duvet and uses one or the other - he "runs warm" and although sometimes he starts the night with both, he always ditches one or the other during the night. You could put the weighted blanket under or over a summer weight duvet though, if you don't tend to get hot. The blanket should be in a duvet cover.

Separate duvets are better on a double bed anyway - try it for a week if you have spares, you'll never go back...

Mine definitely helps me sleep but it would be no good for me and DH, we have one each. Mine is from onlinehomeshop.com and cheaper than £35. I’d be a bit sceptical about one that didn’t say how much it weighs as that’s kind of crucial! I use mine over my duvet so that it doesn’t need washing as often.

SierraSapphire · 21/11/2022 06:19

I have one, I really like it, the only downside is it can get really hot.

ittakes2 · 21/11/2022 06:34

Be careful if you have painful joints as being too heavy they can make the pain worse do go for lighter than 10%.

lardass88 · 21/11/2022 06:37

I have one. It's a single one and it's brilliant. Highly recommend, I also machine wash mine ( on the hand wash setting)

BogRollBOGOF · 21/11/2022 06:45

My DSs have one each and like the option to use them. Sometimes one might turn up in my room when I have tired muscles as the weight on my legs is soothing.

ofwarren · 21/11/2022 06:48

It needs to be single size otherwise it won't drape over you correctly to get the full effect.

ShandaLear · 21/11/2022 06:55

It didn’t work for me at all. I found it too constraining and restricting and claustrophobic, but it was an absolute revelation for my partner and he’ll sleep with it for at least part of the night most nights. It’s really reduced his stress/anxiety, encouraged deep sleep and sleep for longer, and consequently his anxiety induced skin conditions and rashes (eczema, etc.), headaches and general aches and pains. It really depends on the individual. He’ll sleep with it above a thin duvet.

Londonnight · 21/11/2022 07:10

I had one and just couldn't get on with it. I sleep really badly and I was hoping a weighted blanket could help. I found it too heavy and restrictive. I move a lot in my sleep and found this just made it worse for me.

I know they work for a lot of people, just not me. I ended up selling mine.

Cosycover · 21/11/2022 07:24

I also found it too restrictive and suffocating.

I had really high hopes too.

daretodenim · 21/11/2022 07:29

I have a single one. It is cotton and then you put your duvet cover over. In the summer it's enough, in the wi der I put another duvet on top.

Look carefully at what the contents of it are. The weighted component can be made from different things. Check too that it's equally distributed by being contained within sewn squares. You don't want everything moving to one side or the bottom!

I find sleeping with it normal now. Meaning I don't know what impact it has. I like it though. If I use a regular duvet I feel like there's nothing in top of me, it feels weird!

BigButtons · 21/11/2022 07:30

I made myself one years ago. It makes a massive difference to my sleep.

BigButtons · 21/11/2022 07:31

Btw I put my on top of the duvet- it stops me moving around all night.

Santiagopink · 21/11/2022 07:32

I have the Aldi one. I slept with it once and napped with it once. Went into a very deep sleep and couldn't wake up easily and felt very drunk/ hungover and dehydrated from it. But I don't have sleep problems to begin with.

QuizzlyBears · 21/11/2022 08:44

I have a Mela one and I love it. Agree with everything that’s been said here - defeats the purpose to use the same one for two people, right weight is crucial.

Beeboppy · 21/11/2022 08:48

I have one. It’s 10-15% of my weight and I use it in evenings when I want to relax but not particularly overnight but that’s just because I like to turn over a lot. I’ve bought OH one now after it kept getting borrowed. We both have the John Lewis 7kg ones bought from eBay for around £45.

VeganFromSveden · 21/11/2022 08:57

Wow, thank you all…
big buttons, did you design your weighted blanket yourself, or did you follow a YouTube tutorial?
what was the final cost?
thank you

PatientZorro · 21/11/2022 09:12

I really love mine and it helps me sleep better. I have a single one that I put over the duvet. My DH isn’t so keen, so I just keep it on my side of the bed and that works well.

OliveWah · 21/11/2022 09:35

My youngest DC(13) has been using one for a few years, and finds it invaluable. I bought the blanket on Amazon, you can choose various sizes and weights, and have just bought a new one as DC has grown a fair bit. DC uses it under their duvet, and I wash it once a week, then dry it in the tumble dryer on a low heat.
