England world cup at school

DC is in primary school and they do not care much for football anyway. As a family, we are boycotting the World Cup as a boycott due to their human right abuses.

We received this email late on Friday from the head:

"I am aware that a number of children will want to watch the England world cup game on Monday. Therefore we will be screening the game in one classroom per year group for those who wish to watch the game and those who do not wish to watch it will undertake alternative activities in the other year group classroom."

So basically they are stopping all teaching for the football.

AIBU to email the head and inform him that I will be picking up DC early if school is not going to teach him anyway?

I agree it’s absolutely ridiculous and I’d be furious if it was my kids school.
They make it so difficult to take your kid out of school for anything saying they can’t miss a moment of their education but then pause it for a football game in a World Cup that is full of controversy.
I could maybe agree if it was a final but are they going to do this for every match?
I may also be biased as I’m not British and hate football and the whole culture surrounding football. Hope they lose.

All other matches are outside school hours.... Jesus this is getting boring!!

healthadvice123 · 20/11/2022 18:56

Feels like a lot jumping in the bandwagon of boycotting , but will watch and holiday in places that have also issues
Plus our own history isn't squeaky clean
I don't think a few people not watching at home is going to change things, maybe look at other ways
Plus school is offering an alternative so take that
Others do want to watch and as we have freedom of choice the school is offering both options

MarshaBradyo · 20/11/2022 18:57

I wouldn’t pick mine up but I wouldn’t want them to interrupt day to watch it

ThighMistress · 20/11/2022 18:59

You sound very pompous, OP. What else do you boycott?

”As a family” - does your dc have any say? My Ds didn’t like football when he was little; I wouldn’t have dreamt of being so controlling and holier than thou about watching it at school. Frankly way more time is wasted every single day on other things.

You will make your dc look prissy and you like a hypocritical virtue-signaller with a stick up your arse.

Beezknees · 20/11/2022 19:00

Boycotting will make zero difference. The rich will continue to do what they want, as they always have.

Endwalker · 20/11/2022 19:03

Are your DC happy to boycott it or are they going to want to watch it with their mates? Please don't make them the odd one out by telling school they can't watch it, there is nothing more socially excruciating for a child than having to say "my mum says I can't..." especially when it's very clear that they really want to do the thing.

England versus Iran being played in Qatar who the fuck would want to watch that

English football fans?

Onlyforcake · 20/11/2022 19:05

I'd pick my child up. If they're just pissing about I could take them to their favourite water park for the cheaper session - school don't need to be showing football matches - what's the benefit?

Many people. We've got TVs at work so everyone can watch it. As I imagine will a large number of people up and down the country.

FettleOfKish · 20/11/2022 19:06

Location of the tournament aside, I think showing the football in place of lessons is ridiculous in any circumstance, unless they also routinely show a range of other sporting competitions too.

England won the Rugby League Wheelchair World Cup the other day, were any matches shown in schools, or the tournament even acknowledged? I somehow doubt it.

Onlyforcake · 20/11/2022 19:07

Oh. So you think working mums don't want to spend time with their child? Weird.

OoooohMatron · 20/11/2022 19:07

Do what you want. The World Cup is a big deal for many people, whether you like it or not. Your taking a stand will have zero impact on anything.

Twilightstarbright · 20/11/2022 19:07

I’m a school governor and our school is doing the same. It’s mainly about attendance and desperately trying to keep our figures up. Far from ideal but it’s what we are judged on.

Onlyforcake · 20/11/2022 19:08

(Also I am working my notice .... but if my sons school pulls this shit I'd definitely take a day off).

Newrumpus · 20/11/2022 19:08

Virtue Signalling.

the school have provided a choice - watch the match or do something different. There are lots of different ways to learn. It doesn’t make school any less important because they have found a way to be slightly creative for 90
minutes.

Oh pipe down. A huge percentage of the country will be interested, me included and I'm not even a huge football fan.

Excellent idea, stop lessons for every conceivable event, not just the national sport. Disrupt schooling not every four years, do it every week for everything.

FettleOfKish · 20/11/2022 19:13

@Conkersareback Or, more sensibly just don't disrupt lessons at all. Discuss / show tournaments and sporting competitions of all shapes and sizes in the context of PE lessons but don't stop everything for everyone for a fucking football match.

Oysterbabe · 20/11/2022 19:14

There's a lot of virtue signalling going on around it. A friend's company aren't doing their usual world Cup sweepstake because of the human rights issues surrounding it and the company literally has an office in Qatar.

Identify some other sporting event that's happening at a different time during school hours, and email the head asking what arrangements will be made for your DC to watch it, seeing as it's now the policy to interrupt teaching so that people can watch the sporting event of their choice.

Yes OP, please do this. You won't look like a massive twat in any way 🤣

But they've said they are "disrupting" lessons, 2 hours in four years! Bloody hell that's a massive disruption!

But your post said you want more disruption, for the most random "sport", because why not?

Make your mind up!

Florenz · 20/11/2022 19:18

That's ridiculous, we have three separate sweepstakes going and flags (of all 32 countries) all over the building. Some people just revel in misery and making other people miserable.
