Mice within the flat. Anyone about?

Someone please help!

I’ve posted COUNTLESS times about the mice situation as I’ve had mice since the summer. Pest control have come round numerous times to mouse proof the kitchen (there was a massive hole underneath one of the kickboards). They’ve laid down poison and traps yet nothing. I also have snap traps underneath the kickboards where we’ve seen mouse droppings as well as one of those electronic mouse traps.

Tonight I was asleep in my bedroom with both DCs in their cots and I heard a mouse in the room right next to DDs cot. Now I know this sounds dramatic but I was so scared I thought I was going to have a panic attack. My younger sister stayed over last night so I woke her up to ask if she can help me try to catch it. We couldn’t see it at all. We then saw a mouse run in the kitchen!

Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong. I have all these traps about but I haven’t even caught one mouse. Does anyone have any tips? I really can’t live like this😭

I mean, there’s definitely a conflict of interest there from Pest Control’s POV…easy to see why they wouldn’t recommend cats

Haha yes this is true!😂

I would be inclined to lay snap traps at the entrance to your children’s bedroom (since they’re in cots). 5 or 6 in a tight row. Attempted entry = sure death.

In general, there’s no point in gradually increasing the number of traps. Go nuclear and use the shock factor. 0-20 for instance, overlapping against the walls and next to each other.

This is what I was thinking to do. If I put traps ALL over the kitchen floor then surely I’m bound to catch it?! I was also thinking about putting traps outside the bedroom door as it came underneath our door during the night.

Also @stealthninjamum I have snap traps underneath the kickboards where we’ve seen mouse droppings but I also have some alongside the walls & kickboards in the kitchen. This mouse is smart, it honestly will not let itself get caught! I also have no loft or anything like that

If you're in a flat, speak to the landlord and encourage your neighbours to do the same, as really all the flats in the block need to be treated at the same time.

We have just caught the mouse that was in our walls we used Nutella on the trap… we had the tea down for weeks before, 1 night with Nutella and it worked.

Tinoftomatoes · 20/11/2022 19:48

I don’t know if anyone has said it above, but the only thing that has ever consistently worked for us is paying one of those companies to block every hole so they can’t get in.

These companies come with a guarantee, too! It works.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 20/11/2022 19:50

Thing with poison is they go somewhere to die, under floor, cavity wall etc and then the smell as they decay is dreadful!!!

miltonj · 20/11/2022 19:57

Put a fuck ton of bleach all over the floors, behind fridge etc. The mice will eat it and they will die. It might take them a few days to die and they go a bit crazy and get a bit brave the day before the die but that worked for me. Hard because of keeping two such young babies away from bleach though. Especially your toddler.

In my opinion the local council do a much more comprehensive job than a private company as they have no financial incentive to return but seems like you've had no luck with them.

hiredandsqueak · 20/11/2022 19:58

Try Big Cheese traps baited with mars bars. You need something in the trap that they can't grab and run.

78Summer · 20/11/2022 19:59

We had this the last six months. We tried all brands of poison, snap traps, had a professional in, kept the floor swept of crumbs, and still they kept coming. One was even so bold as to come out and watch tv.
in the end, I bought a load of wire mesh and duct tape on Amazon and we completely sealed under the kitchen units which was the way they were coming in. So far so good. I hope you can sort yours soon. They are very stressful.

Kazplus2 · 20/11/2022 20:09

You could put talc or our on parts of the floor and that might help you work out where they are getting in (from footprints).

Thank you again for all the helpful comments! I live on a council estate but I private rent so the Landlord is only responsible for my flat. However he hasn’t been helpful at all and it’s only until I sent over a picture of a massive whole in the wall did the estate agent get on his case to do something about it.

The first pest control from the council put green powder on the floors underneath the kickboards so we could see if the mice had walked around. I’ve just checked now and was able to see some footsteps. When the estate agents sent round the pest control to close up the hole, the man filled it up with wire wool and expanding foam.

I’ve just had a look now and I can see that the fucking mouse has got their way through the expanding foam and that’s how it’s getting back in! So a hole that I thought was closed, isn’t! That hole is sooo far underneath the cupboard that we can’t reach it. The pest control guy literally had his whole body underneath it using his tools to mend it. I’ll be sending an email to the estate agents today and calling them tomorrow. In the meanwhile we’ve got more traps as close to the hole as possible and will hope for the best.

I’ve tried the Big Cheese traps and have had no luck with it. I’ll be picking up the new traps from Screwfix tomorrow and will buy Nutella to see how I get on!

Update in case anyone still cares!

I decided to go under the cupboards and fill the hole myself as I was too scared to leave it open until pest control decided to show up. There were loads of expanding foam on the floor but there was a small gap in the wall which I managed to put wire wool in. I’m hoping I don’t see anything anymore!😭

I had mice at one house. Try getting plastic takeaway containers with lids. Cut a door out of one end. I tried peanut butter, chocolate, cheese etc but the little sods were eating the bait but not setting the trap off. Found that if you tie bacon rind or pizza pepperoni (was what I had in the fridge) around the spike, the mouse had to give it a tug. If the trap is inside the plastic container, the mouse can't get away and you can chuck the whole thing away if you're happy not to re-use the trap. I hope that makes sense! Good luck

DuchessDandelion · 20/11/2022 23:54

Mice are flexi-boned and can squeeze through holes the width of a Bic biro!

Also, I hear snickers is very tempting bait for them.

OhamIreally · 21/11/2022 00:03

I love cats and always had them. Never had any rodent issues. When my last aged cat died I needed time to get over it. After two years I became aware of a mouse problem- bought traps, filled holes with filler and wire wool, all with no luck- never caught a single mouse.

I got a rescue cat, more because I was ready to have a new one in my home. She was dreadfully shy and scared but turned out to be a great hunter and within a week my mouse problem was gone.

This is why ships and farms always had cats - they are brilliant efficient hunters.

And lovely for cuddles as well the murderous little beauties.

beccahamlet · 21/11/2022 00:07

Please don't use glue traps. It's really cruel.

sleighbellsjiggling · 21/11/2022 00:10

My mum had an issue with rats in the attic a few years ago 🤢. She was recommended a plug in thing that emits a sound that they hate. She hasn't had them back since so that might be worth a shot? It's for mice also.

So long as you don't have hamsters etc at pets as it'd probably send them mad.

Mirabai · 21/11/2022 00:18

Mice don’t like peanut butter as you have discovered.

Don’t get a cat in a small flat with 2 kids, you will just cause yourself a heap more problems, and it’s super unfair on the cat.

Get some fresh nuts and put them in your traps. I’ve never had a problem trapping multiple mice.

formulatingAresponse · 20/11/2022 04:46

We had mice the only thing that worked was poison. The blue looking grains.

Same. I found that you have to open little bags and spill the grains if you have mice, as they wouldn't chew through the plastic- although, instructions say you shouldn't open them.

BuggersMuddle · 21/11/2022 01:10

It's been a long time, but when I had mice in a tenement flat, the problem was the neighbours! Fortunately it was short term (renovation), but I know others in the block had problems because the neighbours on the lower floors ignored the problem (I was several floors up). Hard to deal with as an individual if there's a problem in the block.

Been in a house for years now. The moggy was a great mouser / ratter, but when we had local roadworks and there was a giant rat in the wall he wasn't quite up to the task! (Baited trap, nutella & pest control in the end).

BMW6 · 21/11/2022 01:34

We live in a terraced house, had a bad mice infestation a few years ago.

  1. Have NO food available. Not a crumb (including toaster trays)
  2. Buy a couple of plug in sonic deterrents. Mine were about £20 for 2.
SunshineAndSummer · 21/11/2022 01:35

We had mice and knew because one ran to hide behind the one of the panels in the kitchen. We placed sticky traps along the whole thing so if he dared to enter the kitchen area via the panel he'd have no option but to step on the sticky. And not long after we caught two.

coffeepleeease · 22/11/2022 15:38

Sorry you're going through this OP, I caught a mouse yesterday with a snap trap baited with peanut butter. Only saw the mouse the day before, no droppings or urine or other signs of mice! I know it's unlikely you only get one mouse so I've still got traps in each room of the house. The mouse was seen in the kitchen but it was caught in the bathroom although I know it probably wasn't the same one!

I also didn't know not to touch the traps so now I'm wondering if I should buy new ones and use gloves to put them down!

It's a horrible feeling isn't it knowing they're in your house, I'm cleaning down surfaces as much as I can but then I think for all I know one has urinated on the carpet and then my fighter is playing on it. There's only so much you can do isn't there Sad

Are you in London? I really recommend HLA pest control - they mouse proofed us so effectively that even when our entire terrace was overrun, we stayed mouse free

Oh they didn't work for us! And we heard such good things!
