To let DS go to school with painted nails?

Looking to see what other parents would do

DS is 14, he went to see his friends this afternoon and came home with painted nails which is fine of course and I have no issue with it. But he's said he wants to have them painted on Monday for school. I mentioned school might not allow it to try and change his mind and he said they do.

DP thinks we should just let him but I'm worried in case he gets bullied or changes his mind before he gets there etc.

Should we just let him?

It’s allowed in DD’s school - I agree with checking uniform policy, and that no one will bat an eyelid if it’s allowed.

Virtue signalling? What's "virtue signalling" about thinking nail polish is OK? At 14 he's old enough to make his choice and face the consequences if it's against school policy.

It's not a particularly modern thing - lots of boys in make up in the 60s and the 80s

Marshmallowmountain · 19/11/2022 19:30

It’ll be against the uniform policy so no

Grey23 · 19/11/2022 19:34

Our chemistry teacher used to lob a bottle of ethanol at us If we had painted nails. Job done

Dixiechickonhols · 19/11/2022 19:42

It was banned as dd’s school. But if polish is allowed no reason why not lots of young make musicians wear polish. Mgk has a nail polish line.

Alacarde · 19/11/2022 19:45

There was no rule about it back in my day, but that was a 1980s comprehensive - all the cool girls trowelled on the make-up, sprayed their hair until it was like concrete and strutted about in white stillettoes and pencil skirtsGrin. If a boy had worn make up he'd have instantly been bullied, though, it was like that in those days.

Well quite. But what’s that got to do with virtue signalling?

Zanatdy · 19/11/2022 20:02

No as I bet no school allows nail polish, for any gender

DelurkingAJ · 19/11/2022 20:10

One reason I can think it’s not allowed is that if you a sixth form chemist you could fairly easily melt your nitrile gloves to it in chemistry practicals…not that I did that as a student, oh no.

weyede1442 · 19/11/2022 20:28

There's nothing on the school website about what's allowed and what isn't, it's literally just the uniform. He's only started at this school after halfterm so hasn't even been there a month so I don't want him getting into trouble but he has said his friends have had their nails painted in school a few times and he doesn't think they've been told to remove it.

''@ConnieTucker · Today 18:32
Comparing a school not allowing nail polish to Taliban rule is ignorant and disgusting. Be ashamed of yourself.''

And you need to lighten up and try being a little less over-dramatic.

over-dramatic? You do realise you were the one to compare not being allowed to wear nail varnish with the removal of basic human rights from women by the Taliban? I mean, do you not consider that to be not only massively inappropriate and rather stupid, but seriously over-dramatic? Your first thought to a child possibly not being permitted to wear nail varnish was to think they were under the rule of the Taliban. Over-dramatic? Quite.

BCBird · 19/11/2022 20:43

I teach too. I don't care either re nail colour but our rules state nail polish should not be worn so it's a no from.me

Hankunamatata · 19/11/2022 20:44

I'd say no for school if it were a boy or girl.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 19/11/2022 20:47

Have you checked your school's policy?

BiscuitLover3678 · 19/11/2022 20:49

Nah boys do it loads at school. He’ll know if he’ll get the mick taken out of him or not. Check if it’s allowed though as I doubt it.

KitchenSupper · 19/11/2022 20:53

I’d suggest he takes remover in his bag and if a teacher challenges it to say politely that he had checked the uniform policy but is happy to remove it.
That way he can also take it off if he regrets it.

BeanieTeen · 19/11/2022 21:11

Depends on the school rules doesn’t it? If it’s not against uniform policy then then leave him to it, I don’t really know what you’re fussing about.
