Work dilemma. Boss has been off for a month traveling and is due back on Tuesday. I'm his deputy and am keen to impress.

I am wondering whether to text him on Monday afternoon just to reassure him that everything has run smoothly and no need to get to the office early if he's still jetlagged.

Would you appreciate this, or is it best left? He's very work focused (as am I), so I thought it might put his mind at rest.

YABU - don't message, he probably doesn't give a damn

YANBU - it's a nice thought that will put his mind at rest

This is probably the most relaxed and off work the guy will be. Don’t puncher it with a work zone text / email

He’ll be back when ready don’t worry

Sorry I'd find this inappropriate and tbh a bit arse-licky! Email him first thing on Tue saying everything has been fine and say you're available for a catch-up if he wants one.

This.

Tiani4 · 19/11/2022 17:08

No need to text boss
Everything is fine
Boss will assume everything is fine as they know you are capable
Do t make work or angst
No news is good news
Don't send it during his or her holiday or travel time

feelthebeatfromthetangerine · 19/11/2022 17:09

It's a weird message.

If he's your boss and "work-focussed", you would have contacted him whilst he was away if there had been a genuine emergency.

If there have been no emergencies, you should have been handling whatever was going on.

I'd raise an eyebrow and mentally file it away under 'weird things my direct report does.'

Telling your boss when he can come in to work 😂

thewolfandthesheep · 19/11/2022 17:23

I would not. Send me that and you find me at 0600 Monday morning in the office to understand why on earth I needn't come late on Tuesday. You are trusted. Leave it that way. You can prepare your brief though and send it last thing Monday as "everything went smoothly". And also, well done OP.

Hellsmovie · 19/11/2022 17:25

Pull your tongue out of his arsehole

1994girl · 19/11/2022 17:30

Don't bother; you aren't the boss.

😁 at the use of the word superior. No-one is superior or inferior to another person.

I think that the OP mean that he’s in a position senior in organisational terms to her; not that he’s in anyway a superior person. Most people would realise this.

I think it's fine to send a welcome back, everything ran smoothly look forward to catching up when you're ready or whatever- but cripes no to the bit about coming in when they're ready.

I’d do this, if I was keen to impress. An update email that he can read first thing.

Thomaslovesalison · 19/11/2022 17:36

Ive been thinking about this and I may send something to say things are fine and there's nothing outstanding that needs immediate attention.

Thomaslovesalison · 19/11/2022 17:37

But don't tell them when to log in.

honeyytoast · 19/11/2022 17:46

OP replied on first page acknowledging feedback and saying the weren’t going to do it, no need for multiple further pages all saying the same thing

Carlycat · 20/11/2022 01:14

Definitely not. It's a bit cringe
