Ridiculous sleep issue

Workyticket · 19/11/2022 10:07

I'm on my knees with tiredness. I've had a stinking cold all week which really hasn't helped

I used to find sleep so easy - always a full night but I wake up most night recently and can't get back to sleep because of song words 😭

I have stupid lyrics rattling round my head and I can't switch off. Last night it was a single line from a song I heard on tiktok, on repeat

It feels like it's belting round and round my brain so fast that I can't catch it and can't get back to sleep at all

Some nights it's from 2am until my alarm goes off at 6.30

We're away for the night tonight and I already feel like I've ruined it because I'm so tired

Has anyone experienced this and fixed it??

It sounds like peri menopause insomnia. Are you old enough?

OnlyFannys · 19/11/2022 10:09

I am a long term insomniac and struggle with constant thoughts I cant switch off. I've tried listening to white noise before and found it kept me awake but read an article about brown noise which apparently is very good for people who suffer with adhd to help soothe their mind. I started listening to it to sleep and it has really helped me, my mind seems to tune into it and the thoughts settle down

Sometimes you need to lean into what your body is telling you. Get up later. 6.30 is too early especially if you’re away.

Frostine · 19/11/2022 10:12

Yes I had that . It was just a couple of lines of a song but it stayed in my head at night for ages.
I can't remember how I got it to stop , but the good news is in the beginning of this sentence . It did go away .
Maybe take a Nytol , to send you to sleep quicker.
Remember it's just a learned behaviour , that will fade.

Restingpotato · 19/11/2022 10:14

When this happens to me I normally put my noise cancelling headphones on with quiet music or a boring talking podcast and it distracts my mind from the repeated phrase enough that I can fall asleep

Workyticket · 19/11/2022 10:15

@OnlyFannys I've not heard of that - will look into it, thank you

6.30 is when I need to gwt up for work, not when we're away! Sorry if I wasn't clear 🥰

OP, you an an "earworm".

Take some comfort from the fact that it's a recognised thing, so you're not alone ... however, having an earworm disrupt your sleep like this is unsustainable.

Google "sleep hygiene" & follow the practices - I'm assuming you're currently unaware as you've not suffered with sleep issues previously.

Mindfulness will also help - www.mindful.org/a-mindfulness-practice-for-better-sleep/

& herre are some tips which have worked for fellow sufferers -

Hope you get the most out of your trip away, & soon return to normal OP.

KettrickenSmiled · 19/11/2022 10:17

HAVE an earworm, that should say ...

PantyMcPantFace · 19/11/2022 10:25

Peri was awful for my sleep. HRT fixed it.

Princessglittery · 19/11/2022 10:55

I find the NHS Feeling Good app www.feelinggood.app/onboarding/national-wellbeing-hub/
works.

Workyticket · 19/11/2022 11:03

@KettrickenSmiled that's an amazing amount of help, thank you
.you're right - I'm clueless as never been without sleep before

I need to put some time aside to read and take notes

With regards to HRT - my pal at work has been begging her doctor for ages (she's 52) but keeps getting turned down. I wonder if it's an individual doctor thing 🤔

With me that is a sign for the start of a migraine, which is not always followed by pain.

WarriorN · 19/11/2022 11:53

I started peri in late 30s and insomnia for no reason was one of the first symptoms.

By 44 was on hrt as symptoms crippling. Periods still regular (half the issue!)

Now on high dose. Periods though seem to be dwindling.

At 45 you can try hrt without any blood tests based on symptoms.

I will say the magnesium and taurine did help insomnia for a while but any alternative thing I tried didn't last.

KangarooKenny · 19/11/2022 11:59

Yes, I get this. Definitely a peri thing.

vivainsomnia · 19/11/2022 12:01

Yep, terrible perimenopause. Oh yea, the songs in the head at night, dreadful. It git to the point I didn't want to listen to any music just in case.

It gradually got better. Still happens but not as bad.

fruktsoda · 19/11/2022 12:06

Weird... Never heard of this particular symptom. I hope you get through this phase quickly, OP! I do find that listening to natural brown noise (water sounds, mostly) helps me fall asleep, but getting back to sleep can be so difficult!

LadyWhistledownsPen · 19/11/2022 12:06

You codul try listening to a podcast. I listen to Get Sleepy sleep stories at bedtime and I'm usually asleep in ten minutes or so.

Workyticket · 19/11/2022 12:13

Thanks everyone. Some really useful things to look into

How do you all listen to podcasts etc when you share a bed?
