You had a house fire? So sorry OP

nophonesonbed · 19/11/2022 09:28

It's not worth it

OP posts:
nophonesonbed · 19/11/2022 09:30

There's a post where people are saying don't make an issue about phones charging on abed. This is why you don't leave phones charging on the bed.

Omg hope you're ok

nophonesonbed · 19/11/2022 09:31

It was six months ago everyone fine we are hoping to move back in another 4-5 month. But aside from the trauma of losing all our possessions try getting affordable house insurance when you have had a £250k claim.

Sorry you went through this scary situation.

Would the phone/charger not caused a fire if it was on the carpeted floor? Genuinely curious

misscockerspaniel · 19/11/2022 09:33

I know of the same happening to someone who left a laptop on their bed, charging. Hope you are all OK.

nophonesonbed · 19/11/2022 09:39

In an ideal world we charge our devices when we are present and conscious but yes a carpet is risk too . The reason a phone catches fire could be electrical a fault with wiring or device. Or it can get too hot . It's important phones are not left in direct Sun or where a window/ mirror could reflect heat. And not on a fabric surface

I don't think people ever saw how these batteries burn. And don't stop. If they stop they reignite. It's not just an ordinary candle like flame

nophonesonbed · 19/11/2022 09:55

Another tip shut your doors when you leave rooms / go outall the bedroom/Bathroom doors ware open so the damage was worse

And the poisons in non flammable products cause smoke/smell that will travel through the entire house and ruin everything it reaches

Just yesterday morning I trod on the end of my charger lead that I had left plugged in. It burnt my foot. Once I looked at the charger I realised the whole connection was black/burnt/melting. If I hadn't of noticed when I trod on it by accident, it would have been left on all day with no one in the house. Thank-you foe posting these pictures. So sorry this happened x

WarmSausageTea · 19/11/2022 10:14

I feel for you OP and hope you get things sorted as smoothly as possible.

We had smoke damage from a fire which gutted the (then unoccupied) house next door. Honestly, it got everywhere, wrecked electrics, and the stains it leaves were impossible to remove.

In the end, we had pretty much everything other than tableware replaced; clothing, linens, soft furnishings, electric goods. We also had to leave the house for quite some time, the smell was beyond belief.

So yes, another voice to the chorus of please be careful when charging.

actualnamechange · 19/11/2022 10:24

Thanks OP. I'm always a bit surprised when people are dismissive of basic fire safety. All my DC have been taught to charge safely, on a hard surface, while they are awake and never left unattended for long periods of time. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 19/11/2022 10:33

OP Sad. Thanks for the reminder - it's so normal for folk to leave electronics charging any old place. We try and charge everything on kitchen worktop and nothing left on overnight.

Ohdofuckofdear · 19/11/2022 10:47

Oh hell I am sorry OP that must have been bloody terrifying I hope your all okay?

Thankyou for sharing this, I'll be honest I never even thought about this but I'll make sure I tell all 5 of my DC to make sure they don't leave they're phones on they're beds when they're charging them anymore.

Hope you are Ok, and thank you so much, I am going to insist my 4 look at these photos-I spend my life insisting they charge safely, but they just think I'm being OTT 😓

bigbluebus · 19/11/2022 11:50

I've lost count of the number of times I've told adult DS not to leave his laptop running on his foam/fabric office chair seat in hus bedroom when he goes out to work or is asleep. If he doesn't close the lid properly the laptop keeps running. After a lot of nagging I think the message is starting to sink in but I'll show him these photos just to make sure.

Sheilascarface · 19/11/2022 11:51

Yeah did this in fire safety training. Don’t charge phones overnight.

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/11/2022 11:52

Sorry you went through this. I totally agree and agree we are far too blase about this.
Leaving aside the risks, I just think its naff. I don't want phones dominating supposedly intimate spaces. I've come close to falling out with my OH about this.

Sheilascarface · 19/11/2022 11:52

And thank you @nophonesonbed Flowers

KateBalesCardi · 19/11/2022 12:03

I drive DH mad because I unplug stuff he's left charging before bed, he thinks I'm overly cautious so will show him your photos OP and thanks for warning others, I'm sorry it happened to you. Also a question for @Sevensins about your post, was the charger actually charging or just still plugged in when you trod on it? Worried now as we do tend to just unplug the device and leave the charger plugged in, can they get hot even when not in use?

MojoJojo71 · 19/11/2022 12:09

Wow OP so sorry that happened and hope you are all Ok.

When the fire service came out to fit my fire alarms they said that the most common of their call outs at the moment is fires that have started from devices that have been left charging. They also advised me never to leave devices on charge overnight so I charge my phone in the evening before I go to bed now.

ChimbarasiKotapaxi · 19/11/2022 12:45

Thank you so much for your warning OP So sorry it happened to you
