Oh hell I am sorry OP that must have been bloody terrifying I hope your all okay?

Thankyou for sharing this, I'll be honest I never even thought about this but I'll make sure I tell all 5 of my DC to make sure they don't leave they're phones on they're beds when they're charging them anymore.

Thanks we are all fine and even the dog was out the house when it happened or it would have killed him.

We will be out of our house about a year in total. Insurance will cover it thankfully but additional costs means we are still out of pocket. We lost roughy 85% of our belongings. It's been awful and temp accom is no fun but luckily we weren't hurt or worse.

Thanks for this warning. I often leave my work phone charging overnight on the sofa arm. Going to stop doing it

AlwaysLatte · 19/11/2022 14:44

If my goodness, I'm so sorry for your house, but glad you were out. Thanks for the warning, I charge my phone under my pillow (so my alarm doesn't wake my husband). I had no idea it was dangerous.

PincesssPeachh · 19/11/2022 14:52

So sorry that happened. How scary.

I don't even charge devices overnight for this very reason. A lot of phones these days have fast charging so I charge before going to bed.

I drive DH mad because I unplug stuff he's left charging before bed, he thinks I'm overly cautious so will show him your photos OP and thanks for warning others, I'm sorry it happened to you. Also a question for @Sevensins about your post, was the charger actually charging or just still plugged in when you trod on it? Worried now as we do tend to just unplug the device and leave the charger plugged in, can they get hot even when not in use?

The charger was in the plug but it wasn't charging my phone.

Honeyroar · 19/11/2022 22:37

It doesn’t even need to be on a soft surface (bed/carpet etc) it would ignite most things, those batteries get so hot. We used to do training on how to cool them down if there was a fire on an aircraft - you’d submerge them in water (obviously not picking it up with your hand). They used to say put it in a metal tub of water because it might melt a plastic tub if it touched the sides.

Never leave your phone charging somewhere when you’re not nearby.

Notoironing · 19/11/2022 22:38

I also read about a fire local to me which was caused by a glass ornament hanging against a window on a sunny day.

ofwarren · 19/11/2022 22:40

I often charge my phone on carpet overnight. I don't even think.
Thanks for the warning

CornishTiger · 19/11/2022 22:41

Thanks for the warning including carpet. How awful. Will remind the teen.

purpleme12 · 19/11/2022 22:50

I always charge my phone on the bed next to my head?
Mainly so I can hear the alarm in the morning.
I charge it overnight as I'm not using it then.

I didn't know it was so dangerous?
What should I be doing?
So I shouldn't even put it on a carpet either?

goingtotown · 20/11/2022 08:21

A Government warning would be useful.

megletthesecond · 20/11/2022 08:25

I'm always laying down the law about this with DD. She leaves her laptop and phone on her bed.

PiggyInTheLidl · 20/11/2022 08:31

And don’t use cheap generic chargers either.

My workplace burned down because of a phone on a desk being charged with a cheap charger from the internet. The fire brigade said it was a common risk.

Really sorry OP. Terrible experience.
