To be surprised to learn Adrian Chiles is married to the editor of the Guardian?

Not sure why I'm surprised that he's married to Kath Viner but at least that may explain why he's got a weekly column. And there I was wondering why they were paying him to write such drivel!

I don’t mind Chiles either, certainly preferable to Obergruppenführer Jones’ enraged, pitchfork-waving tendencies.

This is the sort of unpleasantness I meant.

He's genuinely most famous for being pretty bad at TV presenting. Just search Adrian Chiles Gaffes to see some of his many, many screw ups. Working lunch's main appeal was waiting to see how much he'd fuck up.

It's ridiculous to say thinking a celebrity isn't good at their job is unpleasant.

That isn't what I said - I refer you to my last post, which if you'd read the thread you'd have seen before you posted this one.

Farmageddon · 18/11/2022 16:39

You called it an unpleasant little thread when most of the posts on the thread are talking about how boring and pointless his articles are..

Yes, because the author of the thread clearly implied he was only getting work because of who his wife is and the next few posts implied the same thing.

Sorry - some of the next few posts - not all of them.

@JangolinaPitt
He was married Jane Garvey and by all accounts was Odessa’s with Christine???? who didn’t give him the time of day and married Frank Lsmpard

Is this code? What is Odessa’s?

I really liked those business and economics programmes he used to do in the 90s / noughties. He made it all really interesting and accessible and was a great presenter, but sadly no channels seem to broadcast stuff like that anymore.

Yes, Working Lunch on weekdays with Adam Shaw I watched this most lunchtimes and was really sorry it ended. Think it may have been on BBC2.

Really informative and I liked Adrian and Adam.

I think it's 'obsessed'.

He did look infatuated with her to be fair.

I'm fascinated by his columns, mostly because of how inane they are.

Yes. It's like some sort of weird art

Manderleyagain · 25/11/2022 08:18

I liked him on working lunch too. He's obviously really good at taking an boring and often impenetrable subject and making it eccessable and understandable. He should use that talent more.

There don't seem to be any photos of the wedding online. Hardky any coverage of it. So cudos to them for not selling it to hello.

newnamethanks · 25/11/2022 08:29

The Guardian has some terrible columnists, won't name them as I rarely give them the time of day, don't read them. But it also has Marina Hyde, John Crace and Jay Rayner who are worth the rest of them put together.

CheeseMuffin · 25/11/2022 09:07

I agree @newnamethanks and they do some excellent investigative journalism too. The Guardian is definitely more than just the Owen Jones show!

FrauleinEngelhart · 25/11/2022 09:44

Agree that some articles are a bit cringe, it can undoubtedly be very middle class, politically correct, metropolitan and londoncentric, winding up the frothing anti woke types no end.
I just find it weird that some posters are gleefully hoping the paper will fold much like the defund the BBC crowd do.

newnamethanks · 25/11/2022 20:28

Yes, Fraulein, I forgot to mention the excellent and necessary reporting by Amelia Gentleman, on Windrush, for the Guardian. Definitely one for the frothers and anti-wokes. But, as this is a thread about spouses, they were hoist by their own petard on finding out who she is married to. Tied themselves in self-righteous knots all over the place. Which would have been funny if the circumstances had not been so distressingly grim.

Cherryana · 25/11/2022 20:33

Well about 22 years ago I used to know his girlfriend. I can’t remember her name but she was really lovely.

He seems to have had very lovely and intelligent wives and girlfriends and so there must be something there that they see in him, I have always found him to be a good presenter.

JennyForeigner · 25/11/2022 20:35

Puts my teeth on edge how completely shit that column is.

And how it's always 'How I', 'When I' 'How I realised...'

FFS WE DO NOT CARE

Pinniepotter · 25/11/2022 20:38

The Guardian is utter crap and Adrian Chiles column is drivel. I barely look at it and it was my family paper going back generations. It breaks my heart but what can you do. Kath Viner has a lot to answer for anyway.

ilovesooty · 18/11/2022 15:54

I didn't say that was unpleasant. It's unpleasant to suggest that he has no professional competence and only gets work because of his wife.

I have no idea why he gets work. But he is dreadful. Every time I have the misfortune to switch on R5 when he's droning on and on , it depresses me. Thankfully there's an off button

newnamethanks · 25/11/2022 20:44

What erudite publication have you replaced it with? Do tell. I long to emulate the level of expertise your writing displays.

Abhannmor · 25/11/2022 20:53

Does this mean Tim Dowling is being nudged towards the Exit ? He usually writes the inane drivel columns at the Grauniad.

newnamethanks · 25/11/2022 21:03

You're not kidding, Dowling's witterings are intolerable. I recommend Tom Hunt who has a weekly column on how to repurpose your leftover food scraps into something edible for dinner. It's very funny. Unintentionally so.

MetellaInHortoEst · 25/11/2022 21:03

Columns are tricky.

The only three I’ve ever regularly, reliably enjoyed were;

  1. “Living with Children” which was anon but turned out to be Julie Myerson and my god the ethical undercurrents and fallout from that.

  2. Shamefully, Liz Jones for sheer rubber-necking wowzersness.

  3. And always always the Guardian’s US/British chap whose name I’ve unaccountably completely mislaid. The “Mr X, for example, is a cunt…” guy. He just has a gift.

Actually just remembered a fourth- the sadly long-gone John Diamond. He used to make me laugh like a nutcase in public quite often (so pre-children then, when I took the weekend papers out to a cafe). One about a breast pump and a motorbike springs to mind.

So many other columnists occasionally hit gold, and I enjoy their non-column work, but it’s just plain hard to churn it out evenly every week. Especially if you’re aiming for some degree of knowing whimsy.

X post. Yes Dowling is who I was praising.

It’s all just taste, isn’t it?

Rescue complex probably.

He seems very personable and modest but didn’t he do a whole documentary about his functioning alcoholism?

iloveyankeecandle · 25/11/2022 21:13

He lives by me. Saw him pissed up one evening.

newnamethanks · 25/11/2022 21:24

@MetellaInHortoEst 😁how's your evening going Mrs Dowling?
