Aibu to ask you for easy, cheap party foods?

I am a single mum of two and have offered to provide some food for the kids’ club Christmas party. I have a disabled child and am so grateful to the club for being so accommodating to my daughter. I am realising now how challenging this will be for me. Why am I such an idiot to take on things I will struggle to deliver? They have accepted my offer. What can I do that will be easy? There will be lots of kids who are halal.

Thinking of paying for large pizzas to be delivered.

Rather than buy expensive Pizza, get a sheet of ready made puff pastry, spread tomato purée on it, top with grated cheese. Put it in the oven at 180 for 10- 15 mins.
While it’s still warm cut it into squares.

Some supermarkets will cook pizzas on site- cheaper than takeaway and really good. We have pre-ordered before so they are ready to pick. Kids are generally happy with the beige food buffets adults also secretly love. So crisps, small cheese rolls (rather than sausage if want halal) etc. Are you providing all the food or is everyone bringing something?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/11/2022 12:10

Are you providing some or all of the food?

If some then I'd go to Iceland and buy some big bags of the cheese and onion rolls, sausage rolls etc that just go in the oven for 20 mins. You'd be able to cook 3 trays at once, several platters of beige food that kids like and it would be pretty cheap.

Charles11 · 18/11/2022 12:15

Buy a couple of supermarket pizzas, bake them, slice them then take them in.
Crisps
Cupcakes

InDubiousBattle · 18/11/2022 12:17

Sandwiches- ham, jam, cheese
Pizza slices (cold)
Loada of crisps
Cut up cucumber
mini cheese pasties
Biscuits
Bread sticks & hummus

How many children are going to be there?

Mosaic123 · 18/11/2022 12:19

Big rice salad. Cooked rice with bunch of finely chopped salad onions and some grated vegetarian cheese mixed in. Add a little mayo.

Obviously refrigerate as long as possible before.

Kokapetl · 18/11/2022 12:23

Vegetarian mini sausage rolls (which means they are also Halal I think?). The frozen ones are pretty cheap. Cook them then once cooled put them in a tin.

Then as others have said crisps, biscuits (party rings!), popcorn, cut up cucumber and carrot sticks.

Sandwiches are never worth the effort IMO- most kids don't actually want to eat them and they are annoying to make.

The cheaper supermarket pizzas might also work as others have said.

takealettermsjones · 18/11/2022 12:26

Sandwiches
Cheese and pickle on sticks
Carrot/cucumber sticks and dip
Potato salad
Cheese and onion rolls
Garlic bread

Comedycook · 18/11/2022 12:28

Sandwiches. Vegetarian sausage rolls. Pizza... supermarket ones are cheaper than takeaway and cold slices are fine in my opinion. Crisps, dips. Big platter of cucumber sticks, carrots, peppers

Icedlatteplease · 18/11/2022 12:30

Bulk cheap value nachos scatter with bulk cheap value cheese and heat so the cheese melt

Salsa sour cream and guacamole on the side

Although the pizza (either shop bought or takeaway) will probably be hard to beat

Rainbowqueeen · 18/11/2022 12:31

Crisps
Cheese and crackers
Fruit
Buy a slab cake and slice it up
chocolate biscuits

If you have access to an oven then

Ooh, Tuna rainbow pasta salad!

Make up a vat of pasta, rinse with cold water until cool. Chop up red onion, green peppers, quartered cherry tomatoes, and throw in a tin of drained sweetcorn. Drain a couple of tins of tuna and mix it all up.

Dressing - cup of mayo, a cup of natural yoghurt, a tablespoon of both tarragon and red wine vinegar and a crushed clove of garlic.
Mix the bejesus out of of those ingredients and then add to the pasta mix until you've the consistency you want.

OoooohMatron · 18/11/2022 13:01

Good old cheese and pineapple sticks, stuck into a potato to make a 'Hedgehog'.

BlancmanegeBunny · 18/11/2022 13:19

What ages are you preparing for?

Do the disabilities require special diets?

I would keep things very simple.

AriettyHomily · 18/11/2022 13:23

I dont know any kids who would want tuna pasta or rice salad at a party!

Sandwiches - cream cheese / cheese / marmite / jam
Carrot / cucumber / cherry toms
Haribo - you can get the halal version
Mini cheddars
Party rings
Crisps

A party!

You know with stuff like cakes, pizza, crisps etc.

How disappointing to end up with tuna effing salad.

Love these 🥰

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/11/2022 13:36

Unless you’re really struggling for money, I’d got for the buying stuff option. As others have said, crisps, biscuits, those little cakes with a circle of icing they all love (but £1/ 1.50 a tray)that type of thing. Some pre cut carrot sticks etc if you can afford that.

Then it’s not a big undertaking of time.

Not thinking the rice or pasta salad for a kids party if I’m honest.

UsingChangeofName · 18/11/2022 13:37

Have to agree with @Quincythequince and @CourtneeLuv

OP - can you clarify if you have been asked to send something in as a contribution for the table (ie, all the parents are sending something in) or if you are catering for the whole event, individually ?

MatildaTheCat · 18/11/2022 13:39

Look, assuming it’s some weeks away just be clear about what you can afford to provide. If you say, for example, ‘delighted to contribute and can offer x and y’ then they can plan to ensure they have enough and a good mixture.

if you provide a bit more detail on ages and numbers the clever people on here will help yYou figure it out.

Thinking of paying for large pizzas to be delivered.

Go to Costco if you can.
Massive margherita pizza is £7.99.
