Is this something I need to worry about? Heart rate ~55 during the night

QuestionableMouse · 18/11/2022 09:49

Twice recently my heart rate has dipped to around 55 in the night. I was awake though laying in bed. It goes back up to around 70bpm which is normal for me when I got up and moved around a bit. (Wasn't a false reading - came from my fitness tracker but read the same on the pulse ox I have!)

I've been unwell and I'm struggling with anxiety too at the moment so I'm not sure if it's something I need to actually worry about!

Thank you!

Nope. Pretty normal in my experience.

QuestionableMouse · 18/11/2022 09:58

Thanks!

You are resting, it is completely within normal parameters

Nap1983 · 18/11/2022 12:51

Nothing to worry about as a resting heart rate.

FuckabethFuckor · 18/11/2022 12:54

Totally normal and healthy. This is not something you need to worry about.

It's one of the downsides of fitness and health trackers, isn't it; all that data! For people who are inclined towards anxiety (I am one of those too) it's not always helpful.

greenhousegal · 18/11/2022 13:09

I regularly get alerts that my HR was below 40 for x minutes at x time while asleep in the night. No issues according to cardiologist as long as it rises on activity. I do take beta blockers for arrhythmia though, but I feel great. Never tired, breathless or have chest pain. I just get on with it. I'm sure you'll be fine. 55 is ok when sleeping.

QuestionableMouse · 18/11/2022 14:55

Thank you. Just really freaked me out last night. Not helped by the cold from hell which is knocking me for six!

The solution is obvious - ditch the fitness tracker. You don't need it and absolutely nobody needs to know what their heart rate is at night. I am nearly 60 and have never known my heart rate, inc when I spent a week in hospital - why should I care what it is? Too much information can be extremely damaging.

Potteryguru · 18/11/2022 15:07

I would stop wearing your fitness tracker. That’s what I’ve had to do as I suffer with anxiety and the constant ability to see heart rate became too much.

QuestionableMouse · 18/11/2022 15:29

Yep, absolutely planning to stop wearing it. To be honest, I don't normally wear it to bed but fell asleep with it on.

It's fine and aperfectly normal sleeping heart rate - take it from someone who has heart failure and knows far more about heart rates than I ever thought I would!

QuestionableMouse · 18/11/2022 15:52

I wasn't actually asleep though - I had been, woke up and saw it.

I had a patient with a heart rate of 37. ECG was normal. I was on edge all night!

Upsidedownagain · 18/11/2022 15:57

I have a fitness tracker. My resting heart beat is 56. I thought it was a sign of fitness to have a lowish resting heart beat?

RunLolaRun102 · 18/11/2022 15:57

AF presents like this. And a similar pattern was how my DF’s was diagnosed (his resting was 75 bpm and his sleeping went down to 50-55. You def need medical advice.

wormshuffled · 18/11/2022 16:00

I was worried about this, my average resting heart rate is 45 on average, and I am by no means an athlete!
I had a recent check up at the doctors for the HRT prep and flagged it. They gave me an ecg machine to wear for 24 hours.
Got a text to say it was normal.

dementedpixie · 18/11/2022 16:05

My resting heart rate is mid 50s. According to my smasung watch it can go into the 40s overnight. I must be an elite athlete Grin

This. There is no reason for a perfectly healthy adult to be tracking their heart rate while they sleep.

In most cases, low heart rate is simply genetic rather than an indicator of either extreme fitness or illness. Low heart rate runs in my family too.

Blueberrywitch · 18/11/2022 16:11

55 is a really healthy resting heart rate! It’s good for it to be low when resting.

willingtolearn · 18/11/2022 16:14

Totally normal.

You are feeding and reinforcing your anxiety with this monitoring.

Notanotherwindow · 18/11/2022 16:20

It's fine. Your heart rate is naturally lower when sleeping, everything slows down while you sleep. Heart rate, respiration, even your bladder doesn't fill up as quickly while asleep. 45 on waking is normal. It would likely rise if you sat up and started doing stuff.

MsNorris · 18/11/2022 16:23

Mine is currently 52, I’m sat on the sofa drinking gin, I just have a low resting heart rate

Quincythequince · 18/11/2022 16:26

You’re fine.

DWMoosmum · 18/11/2022 16:30

My RHR is 60 when I'm in bed, which surprises me as I'm highly anxious when I'm not in bed 🤣. 55 is ok. Are you fit and well?
