To think that alcohol ban in Qatar shouldn’t be a shock

Laurendelaney1987 · 18/11/2022 08:30

The Newspapers are reporting that alcohol will not be served in stadiums during the World Cup.

I don’t understand the uproar: it’s a Muslim country: if you go there you shouldn’t expect to be drinking. Visitors have a choice of whether to visit or not, and Qatar are quite right to not want lots of drunks causing mayhem.

There are many many issues with hosting the World Cup in Qatar: but I don’t think this is a big one

Budweiser is no doubt a long term sponsor of FIFA and pay a lot of money to be able to insert their advertising and sell their products at FIFA events.

FIFA ‘chose’ Qatar to host the World Cup which is clearly incompatible with some of their ad partners products and also incompatible with footballs wider goal to be inclusive of all people including race, sexual orientation. But they ‘chose’ Qatar due to the money and now they have the embarrassing fall out of their sponsors products being banned and a less than welcome attitude towards LBQT+ Fans. That’s before we even get started on the human rights record, slave labour and environmental issues (fans planning to fly from Dubai for matches… ridiculous).

So yes it’s not a shock and you can argue that any fan travelling Qatar was going to face restrictions and need to ‘comply’ but the bigger picture is the absolute sham this World Cup has become. Due to FIFAs greed and incompetence. Unfortunately some countries choose to have laws that are so strict and in my view they are not appropriate hosts of such an event.

Spot on.

They think it's all over ........for FIFA

It is now!

Plenty of folks criticised Russia btw - turns out they were bang on the money as to the bankrupt morality of that state.

Brefugee · 18/11/2022 11:15

Don't remember people fussing like that about the deaths of workers in russia before wordcup. Few articles and that was it.

not sure, are you a football fan? I saw quite a lot of protest from the time it was awarded. My decision on Russia was different to my decision on Qatar in that this time i am completely ignoring it, unless there is a demo to go to. For Russia i didn't spend any money on it, no public viewings (or pub visits or anything) and i literally switched on for the kick-off and switched off during half-time and swiched back on again until the end of the 2nd half. All my discussions were related to on-pitch activity, or discussions about human rights abuses in the country.

Hypocritical? meh. We all do what we're comfortable with. I'm happy for the WC to go to a country with a tradition of playing football. Russia has that. I am not happy with my money going to them so it didn't and i didn't give FIFA or anyone else any encouragement by attending events, doing sweepstakes etc.

We're all human and we all have our own red lines with blurry edges. Nestlé no. Shell, no. Dairy industry? only those certified with high standards. Egg industry? free range and no shredding of male chicks. etc etc.

HotWashCycle · 18/11/2022 11:16

There is a binding multi million dollar contract with Budweiser which they knew about at the start, yet with only three days to go they want to breach that contract. Further evidence of what a dishonest regime it is. Shame on all those who are or will be involved in this absolute sham and perversion of sport, and with the exploiters of slave labour to build their stadiums - more than 6,500 construction workers died.. This means you David Beckham, among others. I wish it was not being shown on TV.

feelthebeatfromthetangerine · 18/11/2022 11:17

Foreigners have always been able to drink alcohol there in limited circumstances. However, I wouldn't ever feel confident - for one, I wouldn't be able to keep up with any law changes, and their punishments are severe for breaching something that would be acceptable in this country. The odds of making an inadvertent but serious screw-up would be high.

Whilst people weren't unreasonable to expect alcohol to be available, I don't understand how they ever actually wanted to drink it there. Some things just aren't worth the risk.

LadyEloise1 · 18/11/2022 11:20

I wish they'd ban alcohol in the stadium I go to, at least during playing time.
I'm sick of being interrupted to let people go to the bar and return carrying pints.
Missing the action on the field, having to get up and down and trying to avoid being drenched in beer. It's no fun.
It used not be like that til we got our super shiny stadium.
I remember going to the UK some years back and being surprised by the numbers of people going to the bar during the game.
This custom then, sadly migrated to Ireland. The shiny stadium had to be paid for.
It really spoils the game.
On the one hand we have government policy trying to get people reduce their alcohol intake as the health costs are huge for alcohol related illnesses, not to mention how it impacts family life.
Yet at every sports event alcohol is being abused by many.
It doesn't make sense.

peppaandherbloodymuddlepuddles · 18/11/2022 11:20

Jheeze. It's just alcohol, can they not go one day without it smh

LindaEllen · 18/11/2022 11:21

I think it's sad that so many people actually believe they can only have a good time if they're drinking alcohol.

I've said this for years.

People's attitudes towards alcohol is bizarre. To want to drink to the extent that you waste a day feeling crap the day after? Why?

Figgygal · 18/11/2022 11:22

I was surprised it was being allowed as freely as was suggested in first place
Anyone going needs to give their heads a wobble

Now we know why he queued for the Queen whilst letting Schofield/Willoughby take all the flak - he doesn't have the best PR for anything.

We don't get that. There is usually one or two in the 5 minutes up to half time but that's it. We do have guys going round with Ghostbuster type contraptions selling beer though, refilling your cup etc. In the home end it is almost inevitable that you'll get a beer-shower if we score. It's part of the fun for some

No beer in stadium: Real shit

Excellent point!

Fifa are completely corrupt, and I hope Budweiser sue the arse off them. It will be fun to see.

I'm getting the popcorn ready. Really really hoping it finishes FIFA

As the crook Blaetter is still walking free I wouldn't hold your breath.

JudgeJ · 18/11/2022 11:30

I’m not Muslim but I’m fed up of all the fuss about Qatar. If you go to a Muslim country, you don’t drink booze

Bless your naivity!

Blatter should pay Budweiser from his own pocket.

Brefugee · 18/11/2022 11:32

As the crook Blaetter is still walking free I wouldn't hold your breath.

everything that shines a light on the corrupt fuckers at FIFA and UEFA who are ruining our game (and to a lesser degree the national FAs. Yes, DFB I'm looking at you) is ok by me.

And for all you "oh so NOW you're cross, it's all about beer" put a sock in it unless you've been following my SM for the last 10 years or so. A lot of people have been cross for a long time. Beer is just one of the things that will peak more people about this issue. But bottom line: it's a contractual thing.

Part of me is going "fucking well played, Qatar, well played". The other part of me is going "FIFA? Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure"

It makes me despair that THIS seems to be what is causing a lot of people to question whether Qatar should have been awarded the world cup... but am not surprised really, money talks. Sad that the human rights atrocities don't seem as much of a point of principle or importance for many though.

Exactly.
The issue is human rights (& FIFA corruption) not respecting another country's alcohol rules (it would be best if it wasn't served here either imo)

jeronimo1873 · 18/11/2022 10:09

Yes so a country is going to change its laws because of a Budweiser contract with football, their country there rules end of.

They can change them when ever they like, dont like it dont go. This thread is hillarious, I cant have my beer waaaaa.

I think you're missing the point.

MistyRock · 18/11/2022 11:39

Theluggage15 · 18/11/2022 10:19

Qatar agreed to beer being sold by Budweiser and now want it to stop. Alcohol is sold in plenty of Qatar hotels so don’t pretend they don’t have alcohol. Don’t want beer at a World Cup, don’t have the World Cup in you shithole country. They’re also still selling alcohol in the overpriced boxes. Hypocritical twats.

Eloquently said. I like it.

Lampedsomeoiks · 18/11/2022 11:42

It is like The Simpsons clip when Homer realises how boring American football is without drinking.

I have never felt the need to drink when watching sport. Maybe it will do some people some good.

You are so missing the point. By miles. You sound like an idiot tbh.

Devoutspoken · 18/11/2022 11:44

Also a good excuse to come on here and moralise about drinking

HelensToenail · 18/11/2022 11:45

The last minute changes aren't just restricted to inside the 8 stadiums but also include around them - the Qatari royal family don't want sale and drinking of alcohol visible in public

Temp in doha 32 degrees and wales have called off training as too hot they're hoping to train later when it cools down

So many reasons not to host in Qatar
