To think that alcohol ban in Qatar shouldn’t be a shock

The Newspapers are reporting that alcohol will not be served in stadiums during the World Cup.

I don’t understand the uproar: it’s a Muslim country: if you go there you shouldn’t expect to be drinking. Visitors have a choice of whether to visit or not, and Qatar are quite right to not want lots of drunks causing mayhem.

There are many many issues with hosting the World Cup in Qatar: but I don’t think this is a big one

They can't sale the tickets, with the buyers expecting alcohol to be sold, then suddenly retract it.
It's a Muslim country, it should be obvious that alcohol is frowned upon /banned.
People seriously need to educate themselves, if that sounds patronising, sorry but meh oh well.
I say this as someone who loves a drink or three

It is not banned 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Foreigners can and do drink in specially designated areas.

They are completely out of line to make last minute changes. But it’s not surprising.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 18/11/2022 09:16

So - should read do 🙄😁

YANBU. I’m not Muslim but I’m fed up of all the fuss about Qatar. If you go to a Muslim country, you don’t drink booze and you don’t promote gay sex. I’m embarrassed at how disrespectful Western visitors are being towards their culture.

Completely agree!

it’s the same with dressing somewhat modestly in certain spaces, no one gives a hoot that you have to cover your shoulders visiting the Vatican but is up in arms when you might have to do that same in a Muslim country

I think it might be an eye opener to some, how much they can enjoy themselves without alcohol.

exactly, there are millions of people who enjoy sport without getting bladdered. For some fans it is their concept of "passion" is to be unruly thugs when footy comes into the.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 18/11/2022 09:15

I actually respect them for enforcing their rule when it comes to alcohol and not just bending it for holiday makers as they want your money like many places so!
Don't respect them for the way they treat people though, that's abhorrent and I wouldn't go for human rights issues not the fact I couldn't enjoy my usual glasses of wine

That’s not what happened though is it.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 18/11/2022 09:19

Yes, I know, see my other comment - it is banned usually unless they're bending the rules as you're a Westerner and they want your cash.
One rule for the rest of the country, one for the rich tourists.

Againstmachine · 18/11/2022 09:20

It could also be said When you agreed to host the world, you also agreed to host the different cultures, tastes and mannerisms of the different people of the world.

But they've paid good money thinking they can have a few beers
It's got nothing to do with you if they get bladdered. That's what some wanted to do and paid good money to do that. Why should it be allowed to be taken away from them at the last minute??

Whilst I dont agree with many of their laws and their human rights, Its great to see a country that actually enforces its laws.

Funnily there will be a handful of brits whom get locked up and start crying about it on the news. About time most actually learn other countries are not as soft and broken as britain with its liberal elite.

Haha, yes they make blame women for getting raped and hand out death sentences for reasonably petty crimes - but yes you are bang on they should be applauded for sticking to their guns!

Law and order! Punishment! Lock them all up!

A true sign of a country who deserves respect

Honestly couldn't make it up 😂

Lozzybear · 18/11/2022 09:21

I think the papers are just trying to highlight why it was a bad idea for FIFA to agree to Quatar holding the World Cup - I am glad that it’s FIFA who are going to suffer due to them breaching the contract with Budweiser. FIFA should never have awarded the World Cup to Quatar - not because of the alcohol issue but because of human rights abuses.

Brefugee · 18/11/2022 09:22

I think it's hilarious. First there were reports it would be 12 quid a beer, and now no beer
The sponsors must be jumping for joy!

Horizons83 · 18/11/2022 09:22

Activelyannoyed · 18/11/2022 09:07

I think the issue is not no booze. It was only a 4 pint limit anyway at 12 pounds a pop. The issue is they made an agreement, and two days befor have changed their minds. If they didn’t want alcohol they should have said so right up front.

Absolutely... and of course if they had said that they would not have been awarded the hosting rights.

I think they've played FIFA.. and services them right.

Horizons83 · 18/11/2022 09:22

*Serves them right

FlamingBells · 18/11/2022 09:23

Look what happens with football hooligans and alcohol in a regular world Cup or euro. I am not surprised that the Qatari don't want violence and thuggish behaviour on their streets. Yobs pissing all over the place and carnage and mayhem.

I hope they crack down hard like the Italians did during Italian 90. I watched a documentary on Channel 4 or 5 a few days ago about it. The amount of hard work & planning that went in to prevent a massive kickoff involving the British fans & the mafia was amazing. I was surprised to hear that a beer bellied yob thought he could take on the Italian mafia! 😂

The Italians also had an alcohol ban in place before the matches so it's not a new thing.

Exactly, and they don't mind how many beers you drink in their overpriced hotels!!!

That's because there isn't a human right to show someone your shoulder is there

Don't host the world Cup then if it upsets your sensibilities.

InterestQ · 18/11/2022 09:25

No alcohol in stadiums everywhere would be good - if you’re a massive football fan, you don’t need booze to get through a couple of hours in the World Cup - Have a drink after.

CPL593H · 18/11/2022 09:25

BelleMarionette · 18/11/2022 09:03

Alcohol in stadiums is not the issue. Allowing an openly homophobic country with a terrible human rights record to host is.

Absolutely this. A pity the outrage about alcohol restrictions isn't channelled towards the shocking human rights abuses.

notimagain · 18/11/2022 09:26

There are lots of claims being made about respecting local rules etc but TBH I can actually only think of one or two countries around or adjacent to the Gulf in that (supposedly) have a total and permanent ban on alcohol..( deffo Saudi, and I'd guess probably Afghanistan)...anybody know of any others? There must be some?

I'd agree with others upthread that say that most places in that part of the world that are thought to be "dry" actually usually do allow alcohol to be served, subject to sometimes quite strict restrictions.

FlamingBells · 18/11/2022 09:27

Are they any openly gay players playing or have they kept quiet? I'd be interested to know how the security is handled.

Moonatics · 18/11/2022 09:28

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 18/11/2022 09:07

It's up to them what they do with their free time.
Would usually completely agree, but you don't just go to a Muslim country and expect it to be fine to get pissed/have a few drinks.
It's nothing like not having turkey at your Christmas dinner!

But it was agreed up front. They are changing the rules now.
If I booked, paid for and took time off for a Turkey dinner, and a few days before I'm told no sorry its vegan nut roast. I would be wanting my money back, if I'd had to book flights and a hotel too I'd be pissed off, and I dont even drink.

Herejustforthisone · 18/11/2022 09:28

I can only imagine the people up in arms about this are thick as mince.

KangarooKenny · 18/11/2022 09:29

I think the problem is that it’s a sudden, late decision. Apparently it’s sponsored by Budweiser !
