To be pissed off at my best mate..

ButterflyTattoo87 · 17/11/2022 18:32

Me and my best mate used to work together (she told me there was a job going where she worked and I got it) about 6 years ago. She left to have children and didn't return to the industry, instead doing minimum wage part time jobs.
I recently got made redundant and told her I had an interview for a new job, with a good wage. She always said she wasn't interested in going back to the industry and is happy in her current little shop job.
I've found out when I told her about the job she applied and as she's still got her qualification, has got an interview too!
AIBU to be fuming with her?

I would be fuming as well. I would never go for the same job unless there were more than one position available.

Brefugee · 17/11/2022 18:37

it's dog eat dog in the jobs market - you have learned a valuable lesson, OP.
Good luck with the interview

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 17/11/2022 18:38

Being fuming assumes you think you're not good enough to get it and she is. It puts you in competition. Maybe look at it from the point of view that she helped you out in the first place and now you might have helped her out.

My best friend did this several years ago when I told her I'd applied somewhere and she applied. She got interviewed before me despite applying after. We compared notes on the telephone interviews and discussed what we would wear to the face-to-face ones. Neither of us got it in the end. It didn't affect our friendship at all.

FlipFlop0 · 17/11/2022 19:08

How did you find out? Did she tell you she was going to apply? I think its out of order myself, I would never do that to anyone.

ButterflyTattoo87 · 17/11/2022 19:09

She did tell me but I thought she was joking so I jokingly replied go for it but it was all very lighthearted I didn't think she meant it.

Kind of a tricky one then since she did actually tell you and she will see that as having your blessing! I know what you mean though about feeling put out by it, I think its just a lesson learned that you don't tell her things like that in the future until the closing date has gone etc x

Overthebow · 17/11/2022 19:26

So she told you and you said go for it? I don’t think you can be angry at her.

SeasonFinale · 17/11/2022 19:27

She told you. You said go for it.

You made an assumption it was a joke. It wasn't so yes YABU to be fuming.

Tiani4 · 17/11/2022 19:27

I would be annoyed too.
Or she had found that job advert herself and intended to apply , that would be different.
Anyway hopefully you'll get it as if she gets it she might put i n a good word for you again.

But I would definitely play it crds closer to my chest next time and not tell her about jobs I was applying for

Foolsandtheirmoney · 17/11/2022 19:28

Maybe she heard you describing her job as a 'little shop job' and thought fuck you and applied?

PeeJayDay · 17/11/2022 19:29

"Maybe she heard you describing her job as a 'little shop job' and thought fuck you and applied?"

My thoughts exactly 🤣

So this is your fault, but you are blaming her?

She currently has a " little shop job"? Wow, great attitude about retail work and your so called best mate...

Yup.

Jemimapinotduck · 17/11/2022 19:45

Little shop job????? You sound very snobbish and stuck up... I'm also someone with qualifications that now has a 'little shop job' let's hope you never end up in a situation where you have to take a lower job just so you can pay the bills

FlipFlop0 · 17/11/2022 19:50

Mumsnet at its finest again. "Little shop job" could be how the person working in the shop describes her own job, it might be part time 10 hours per week so she refers to her own job as "my little shop job". People on here are very judgemental.

However, I do see where they are all coming from if this is her job that she has never referred to in that way herself.

Workinghardeveryday · 17/11/2022 19:51

Oh dear ….🍿

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/11/2022 19:52

Her family circumstances are more important to her than you are. Dog eat dog 🤷‍♀️

That's different! You can't say go for it and then be pissed off she has an interview. Presumably you assumed she had no chance because of her time out of the industry.

So you should be fuming with yourself then, not her.

BritishDesiGirl · 17/11/2022 19:57

Of course she would apply, the job is open to everyone. You pissed at her because you thought she didn't have a chance .

Snoken · 17/11/2022 20:15

Would you feel the same if she applied to the same uni course? It’s open for anyone to apply, you gave her the go ahead and she did just that. If you haven’t had a career break you are probably favoured in this role anyway, so it’s unlikely that she will get the job over you, unless she gets to interview stage and she’s a natural at it.

paintitallover · 17/11/2022 22:48

There could be more than one job. And anyway, your experience is more recent, which is an advantage.
