"You know me....I'm laid back"

encantorerun · 17/11/2022 16:51

Is always said by the people who are categorically not at all, not even in the slightest bit, laid-back?

Furthermore, I have now reached a point in my life when anyone "declares" themselves to be an 'insert adjective' following the sentence "you know me" - I can be absolutely certain they are indeed the exact opposite. Some examples,

You know me...I like to be organised - said by someone living in chaos
You know me...I always look on the bright side - always constantly moans
You know me...I just get on with it - while kicking and screaming and complaining the entire time
You know me....I just go with the flow - is actually a complete and utter control freak

AIBU? 😁

Honestly, me and my bf had a rare, child free weekend and I was trying to plan something fun to do and every single idea he turned his nose up at and didnt want to do it. When asked what he wanted to do "I dont mind, I'm laid back"

Aarghhhh.

Anyway he is under the patio now.

The most ordinary person in the room will declare themselves as the wacky one.

Yes!!!!! Haha. That's so true!

You know me......I never put myself first.

Always said by someone completely self absorbed and who constantly talks about themselves and their own needs.

WednesdaysChild11 · 17/11/2022 19:12

Maybe they are being sarcastic?

I opened your thread thinking I know exactly what you, but no.
That’s not my experience at all.
In my experience people who say this are lazy, passive, useless people who leave things to be done and taken care by others.
Do not like these people.

Superlative people give themselves that is a huge red flag to be is ’open-minded’.
Funny how people who call themselves this are always anything but 🤔

I'm really sorry - I'm not sure Im following what you mean 😥I'm sure that's me being dim as 2 other people knew what you meant.

Did you mean people who are lazy try and say they are laid back?

Any man that states that they are a 'nice bloke' tends to be the opposite

I work with Mrs You Know Me, I’ll Do Anything For Anyone.

Reader, she never does anything for anyone but herself. Not even the job she is paid to do.

Frostflower · 17/11/2022 19:33

Yes!!!!!!
I know one person who personifies this strange matrix of pridefulness and no self awareness.

'You know me, I am a very kind person' yet has said some of the most scathing things about me and others and made some of the meanest comments. Said person has also lashed out at me hurtful during some of the most vulnerable times in my life and has caused me a lot of hurt from her unkindness.

'You know me, I'm very positive' yet sees the negative in everything and her response to almost any endeavor she hears about is generally 'what's the point/ who could be bothered?' I actually choked a bit when she said this.

'You know me, I never judge' yet is the most critical, intolerant, cynical person I have ever met especially if others live their lives at all differently to her. She actually has a problem with everything other people do and seems to get really annoyed about other people's private business. Often says 'live and let live' but gets twisted with (I think) jealousy when other people have any kind of fun lives.

'You know me, manners are very important to me' yet very rarely says 'thank you'! If you give her a lift, babysit for her, give her a present, nothing! Radio silence.

I am very, very wary of labelling myself as anything because it would be so cringey to be wrong.

😂 I remember my dad used to say something like that but he wasn't "said adjective" and my mum always used to go "yeah right!" He did do it as joke though which is why I thought sarcasm. I'm going have to ask my mum what it was now..

workingeverysingkeday · 17/11/2022 19:36

Someone in work who is pretty scruffy, lazy and has a really messy house keeps saying she is so OCD. She says this on teams when I can see her shit tip of a room behind her

WednesdaysChild11 · 17/11/2022 19:37

Omg I've remembered! It was "it doesn't take me long park does it?" And it took a bloomin century 😂😂😂

Awww I miss him so much 😢

megosaurusrex · 17/11/2022 19:37

YANBU. Also applies to people who claim to be a "good judge of character" or "good at reading people"

pocketvenuss · 17/11/2022 19:51

I dunno. I tell people I'm a punctuality freak and I'm anxious if I run late and I am and I do.

Did you mean people who are lazy try and say they are laid back?

Yes, pretty much.

Example: person doesn’t care about cleaness, they claim it’s because they are so laid back.
Actually the house is getting seriously dirty and they just wait someone else to clean it.

Or deadline to what ever is coming up and all they do is sit and do nothing, someone else can deal with it.

Also, sometimes they let racist/sexist/homophobic comments slide, because once again: they are oh so laid back.

Knew a father who didn’t arent his kids at all, left it all to his wife to do.
He always said he’s so ’chill’ and told (even the kids) that the mother is uptight.

xJ0y · 17/11/2022 19:08

YANBU but I deliberately used this technique at one point.
I had been portrayed as ''stressed, anxious and not coping'' by a woman who was bored and loved to gossip. I knew what she'd been saying. So I did frame my lateness or omissions by saying things like ''that's the problem when you're always on time, the one time you're late people assume somethings happened''. ie I'M ALWAYS ON TIME

that's just a really clever tactic! I know the sort you mean. I've come across a few 'she's not coping' types - when I've in passing said I have a headache....grr haha.

"I'm SUCH a hard worker" said by person who only works 2 days per month

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/11/2022 20:01

I have a very old friend who will always preface an offensive or insensitive remark with the phrase: “I have to say…”

It’s become a kind of red flag to the rest of us that she’s going to be unkind. And of course she never actually does have to say at all. She just can’t stop herself.

”I am a very good listener!”, proceeds to endlessly talk about themselves, expressing no interest in you. These people are exhausting.

This is so true. I know people like this.

Awww but that's ok but you're not swinging it into a positive - you say 'im anxious if I run late' or 'i'm a punctuality freak' - this is actually quite self-deprecating.

Now if you were to say, you know me - I'm always punctual - then I'd be rolling my eyes. 😁haha.
